Is Windows 8 the nightmare I've heard it might be?

Thats like saying ...... If your hetrosexual once you get used to sucking dick you love it.

Windows 8 is horrible , the UI blows , and the charms are stupid . MS should have put in an option for desktop users . I would almost equate 8 with vista , wait till windows 9 . likes those that waited for 7.

Welp, that's your opinion. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was just wondering if Windows 8 was as bad as I heard it could be, with tightly controlled installations from the app store and the like. (Could be wrong about this.)

Just curious.
it is ok
lots of new stuff
lots difference then 7
i love it

It's just horrible for using with my laptop's touchpad. One could say that I can just buy a usb mouse, but it doesn't help when I have to take my laptop to other places

EDIT: And it's really hard to pirate. I'm not gonna pay for yet another Windows license, when I've bought many computers that came bundled with Windows when I use mostly Linux
Um.... its just as hard to pirate as windows 7 was.... which isn't hard?

As far as I know, pirating Windows 7 got way easier nowadays...

About Windows 8 pirating...

You have to download an image of a modified Windows 8 iso that don't ask for the serial number. Unfortunately, it is very hard to find this modified iso at my native language, so I downloaded an unmodified iso and made the modifications myself. Later, you have to download a software to activate your Windows 8, the main problem is you have to use it every 180 days or something and I just don't have the patience for that. Plus, I didn't found it that good to be worth the effort of keeping a pirate copy in my laptop.

God forbid you have to run a program that takes 5 seconds to complete once every 180 days just so you can pirate a piece of software. Ever heard of task scheduler?

Sorry if I'm really lazy for your standard.

Besides, I don't have any specific reason to use Windows 8. I am pretty happy using Ubuntu and I can always use my legit copy of Windows 7 without nedding to worry about future software updates and MS making me feel like a thief when I've got licenses from Windows 95, 98, XP and 7 and I don't even get the right to a fair discount for a Windows 8 license. (that update promotion doesn't count, you don't get a license you just get a software that can only update your Windows 7 a maximum of five times)

Hey RodrigoDavy did you know that Win 8 Pro did only cost 30 euro if you were running any(yes even pirated) Windows 7 version? :)

I bought it :)

Sadly, my laptop is a Sony Vaio-Z, and Sony went out and said they will only support a select few laptops with drivers. So for my Vaio-Z there exists no official graphics drivers. There exists some hacky drivers by the community, but they are probably not the right thing to use.

I'm going to reinstall win8 on my laptop and give it another go, cause last time it didn't go so well :D

One perk of being a student with access to MS Dreamspark: Free Windows 8 downloads :P

As for the OS itself, I don't see any problem with it. Having used OS X for a few years as my main OS, I don't see the problem with no start menu. I'd rather have all needed software in one place vs. having to dig through the start menu. :P

Yeah I also got Win8 for free on DreamSpark :) Installed it yesterday, and I kinda like it. It does all that win7 did, and more. I never use the start menu anyway. I hit windows key, and type the software I wanna use. That still works.
Or, win+r for run, or win+e for explorer. All works great :)
I'm sad my motherboard, asus p6t deluxe v2 (i7 compatible yada yada) doesn't have any drivers or anything for win8! However, everything seems to work as it should..

I've used it for about two days as I played around with it on my brother's laptop.
On the first day I thought it was horrible because I was annoyed by the UI changes.
On the second day I started to get used to it and thought it wasn't too bad.

There are still things that I hate, for example the fact that you can't link to Metro apps from the desktop (at least not easily). Couldn't even pin Skype to the taskbar!! urgh...

I can actually pin anything even a folder on the metro screen. I think we can't use metro since it has been used by another org i think.

And no its not a nightmare else the sheer number of windows 8 tablets/laptops these days would not be existing

As nvidia's own drivers don't work on my nvidia geforce 330M for Windows 8, the hdmi out doesn't work in windows 8.
Installing the fan-made drivers made hdmi out working. However the hdmi audio didn't work. But I might've just missed to manually install the Realtek HD Audio driver. I'll try that next time I install Windows 8. Might actually try this weekend or maybe next weekend.

I'll stick with 7. The only thing about 8 that really interests me is the arm support. A UMPC for gaming or that can be used with productivity software would be useful to me
Unfortunately that's not how it'll work. The ARM version is "Windows R/T" and won't run x86-compiled programs (meaning all the existing windows software unless re-compiled and using no x86 assembly).

does it let you edit the files association types (extensions) like in XP?
because win7 doesn't let you do it
If you mean viewing extensions, it's a setting in the folder display options, if you mean editing the running program, "open with" has an "always use this program" checkbox (really quick way to swap it), or you can use regedit or something if you need finer control (like arguments).

Your probably thinking about volume license version.... but you don't need that you can turn your copy into a volume license version with the best version of the activator..... and yea 180 days is long enough lol....

It's pretty much the same. There are a couple of new annoyances that are pretty easy to get used to or work around.

It's not horrible, the whole metro GUI paradigm just has no place on a full computer, its a tablet GUI forced onto computers so that microsoft can have a 'unified experience' across their platforms in an effort to head off apple.

If you don't mind lowering your productivity then its fine, but why anyone would WANT a non windowed GUI (fullscreen apps) and annoying live tiles on a computer when its replacing the functionality of a simple list of programs/options (start menu)? The start menu fits into the existing desktop paradigm well, metro is just forcing you out of one into another for no real benefit (to users, Microsoft sees the benefit to itself).

Serious/Factual: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/windows-8.html
More lighthearted: http://cdn.mactrast.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Windows-Evolution.jpg

Edit: I should say that for me, an OS should allow me to load the programs I want and otherwise stay out of my hair. If you prefer new/shiny over efficiently performing the tasks you wish to do then perhaps there is a benefit to the Win8 GUI.
You haven't actually USED Windows 8 have you? In fact, why did I even phrase that as a question? It's blatantly obvious that you haven't.

Yes I certainly have, but thanks for letting me know you have a greater understanding of the things I do than I myself have.
I'm sure the condescending attitude will get you so much further than making coherent points in favour of your perspective.

I need to make arguments... In Windows XP it was really easy to do
now I guess register editing or 3rd party software are my only choice
