Since I bought 3 3DS games this year...
1) Kid Icarus Uprising - greatest game on the 3DS by far (excluding VLR, which I haven't played, but I will eventually). Awesome music, awesome gameplay, awesome grahics and awesome online. Now, if it would have allowed for better controls with the CPP(not only lefties mode), it would've been one of the best games ever. That's the only thing that falls short. It's so great, that even the OP warned us to not flood the topic with it, yet more than half the posts have this game as #1.

2) Kingdom Hearts DDD - great game, better than KH II in my opinion(which was 70% button mashing, only played it for the story), Flowmotion is a nice gimmick, Dream Eaters were a nice addition, but swapping between characters is a bit annoying, there's a small amount of worlds and mediocre story. But in the end it's the gameplay that counts and it's very well done in this game.

3) Paper Mario: Sticker Star - I'm a great fan of the Paper Mario series, because every time it throws something new on the table. Sticker Star is no exception. It's a bit less enjoyable than TTYD or the original, but I'm glad it didn't stay the same, since it would be the same game basically. Overall, the inventory-ish type of battles work well for the series.

I'm saying it again, if I had played Virtue's Last Reward, it'd have probably been on #2 position, or, heck, even first.

I like turtles.
If we're considering system titles as well, i'd say my personal favorite is the Health and Safety Information. I had loads of fun playing that game, I've logged over 100 hours so far on that game, best of all, it is highly replayable. Tried Kid Icarus, but Health and Safety Information tops it for me. IMO Kid Icarus was mediocre, returned it to Best Buy 3 days after I bought it and played it (Check Best Buy on 44th and 5th ave in NYC, they might have my used game back on the shelf for sale).

Count me in on the spam Kid Icarus votes. The control complaints piss me off, because they really did fit the best way possible. I asked one of my (left-handed) friends to try aiming with the circle pad and it was shit compared to stylus at least in flight mode. They really should've added the full CPP support, the way Bit.Trip SAGA added analog controls for the dipshits who somehow thought D-Pad would work, or how GoldenEye offered Classic Controller support which nobody used online.

In response to your list

Virtues's Last Reward: Haven't played, but I was one of the few who wasn't completely mesmerized by 999. I'll get this eventually.
Crashmo: And you say Kid Icarus is overrated? Pushmo is one of the most bland, repetitive, overhyped puzzlers I've played in a while, and Crashmo simply changes the formula a bit. I will bite if there's a sale, simply because Pushmo was fun for the first 5 or 6 worlds. Art of Balance: Touch I found to be a much more enjoyable puzzle game, same with Crush3D (which I got for the same price).
Mutant Mudds: Also overrated to no end. No innovation whatsoever, and the majority of the game was too easy for me, while the DLC levels were ABSOLUTELY FUCKING TERRIBLE. Leaps of faith, cheap enemy placement and unfair boosts of death galore. Mega Man 9 and VVVVVV were equally challenging, but had less cheap tricks and some actually good level design.
RE: Revelations: I'd put this third. The campaign was really short, wasn't fond of the controls unlike Kid Icarus (CPP did wonders) and Raid Mode online sucks (great with friends). Yet despite these problems, I had a blast with this one.
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask: My second of the year. It's more Layton, obviously it's going to be really good and I really liked the story in this one (haven't played Last
Specter, yet the few times I was lost wasn't a problem at all)
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: A bit of a different answer, as I haven't played Final Fantasy much. Without that experience, I can say it's nothing special. Not bad per say, but I'd much rather play Stepmania, Rhythm Heaven, Rock Band, etc;
MGS3: Port. Inferior to essential collection
Tales of the Abyss: Haven't played.
NSMB2: Formulaic, but that's not my problem. The problem is that beating the game takes only 5 hours, and getting 9,999,999 coins is a fucking grind on an easy-ass game. Also, the level design was far from bad, but after playing the absolutely amazing DLC pack, I must say "why do these feel so uninspired"
Cave Story: Fuck Nicalis. Fuck their lazy-ass ports. And fuck the whoring of this game. One of the best games of all time being whored out (5 re-releases over 2 years) is not a good thing
Rayman Origins: The demo alone proves that this is the worst version of the game.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star: Going to try this soon. See if I enjoy it enough to knock KI off my top spot.

2012 has been a pretty good for the 3DS with some rather exciting games for the system. There have been actually good games released for the system which allowed for a change in attitude from "EVERYTHING IS IN 3D," whilst playing crap games to "this game is actually pretty fun."

Now before everyone posts Kid Icarus Uprising and wanks over it, let us remember the notable titles that got released this year, Virtues's Last Reward, Crashmo, Mutant Mudds, RE: Revelations, the Miracle Mask, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, MGS3, Tales of the Abyss, NSMB2, Cave Story (again), Rayman Origins and Paper Mario. Hopefully we'll get some diversity in the answers now

For me, the standout game was VLR. It was without doubt the standout game on the 3DS. I've played KI, MGS3, Mutand Mudds, Tales of the Abyss and Revelations but VLR was a phenomenal gaming experience. The twenty-five hours I spent on it were an absolute blast. The story was fantastic and the characters were memorable. And it is very rare when I can say that about a game. The only complaints I had with game were with the bugs with game such as the game just crashing on me and the lack of the english dub in the E version
Of course emigre's favorite game is VLR! Out of the 4 games that I bought this year (RE:R, Nano Assault, Art Academy, KI:U) my favorite game is RE:R. Though that's only because I only picked up the other 3 in the past few months. I've had RE:R since release and I am only half finished Hell Mode. I have yet to conquer Casual mode.

Probably Theatrhythm or Kid Icarus for me.....

This year wasnt really that amazing for me personally, havent brought a decent chunk of this years releases yet. The game I was hoping to wow me (Paper Mario) turned out to be a disappointing dud.

I would say VLR, but when I think about it, the game had hardly any replay value and the story took so many elements from the writer's previous VNs.
But I guess I still enjoyed it... the puzzles were pretty difficult. The save glitch made me lose over 20 hours btw :@
So much time spent mashing A to get back to where I was.

KI:U would've been phenomenal if the controls were better, I did spend a good amount of time on multiplayer online.

Tales of the Abyss was amazing too, but it is just a direct port of the PS2 so I'm not sure if I should count it.

I don't remember whether or not Pushmo was released this year, but it's definetly one of my favorite puzzle games with an amazing learning curve and pacing as it presents you with the puzzles, and after I finish all the Bonus Pushmos I'll move onto Crashmo which I'm sure will also be spectacular.

Resident Evil Revelations is also the best Resident Evil game I've ever played, perfectly melds horror and action. I still wish it had Mercenaries instead of that silly Raid Mode :'(

Paper Mario Sticker Star was a different experience, but it had so many wtf moments and had me literally laugh out loud multiple times. Not that memorable due to all the generic characters, but I think it has the best music out of the series and gameplay was very fast-paced.

Hmm, in the end I guess I would just say TotA would be my 3DS game of the year, even if it is only a port. I've never played the PS2 version, and this port feels just like the other console Tales games(Symphonia and Vesperia) so I really enjoyed it. New Game Plus with all that grade jazz is fun, and I like doing all the sidequests and getting the costumes.

I personally dislike the controls in Kid Icarus. I play mostly at work, or in the car, and frankly neither place worked well for that game. Same reason any AR-based game isn't one to play in public, but at least with Kid Icarus you don't look like you're having a seizure.

I'd have to say my favorites of the year were Tales of the Abyss and Paper Mario Sticker Star. Now if only I have time to play them....

Kid Icarus Uprising was short? Don't tell me you got fooled by the trick ending.

And Tales of the Abyss came out February 14, 2012 in North America. So I would say it counts.
I found the single player mode quite short, unless i'm missing something?
Are there more than 25 chapters?

:lol::lol::lol:

Anyway, for me RE:R. It just blew me away back then when I played it! Never had the chance to play VLR because it isn't available in PAL territory:whip:

Actually it is. I don't think the game is out in Germany yet but you can get the game in the UK. Amazon have got the game for about £25. I linked everyone up to Amazon when the game was available for pre-order for £22.50.

EDIT: Regarding TotA, I'm including in 2012 because I can. I'm fully aware the game was released in Europe last year but fuck it. I'm emigre and I do what I want.

Did Rayman Origins actually come out for the 3DS? Not being a dick here, I remember just charting its releases for Games of the Month and it was constantly delayed. I don't remember any reviews or it either once it hit.

But carry on, just a minor question from me.

EDIT: And about Kid Icarus's length, it struck me (I haven't played it so this is just impressions) as an arcadey type game in the lines of Sin and Punishment where length should be short. Still action games like those are meant to get a replay now and then or be for score fanatics. Plus there's multiplayer if you care.

It did (in Europe at least) but it was a poor version compared to the other versions. I think the Metacritic score is around in the early seventies.

Obvious answer from me is KI:U no doubt about it.
Other than that one of the 3DS's really strong titles this year for me must be Crashmo. I enyojed Pullblox and all but compared to Fallblox it surpasses it in every aspect even if they're different games with different puzzle mechanics.
Crashmo simply has more variety and complexity than Pushmo which had the problem of having too many similar puzzles, not that Pushmo puzzles were all the same but that there were less methods and techniques involved when solving them. Crashmo on the other hand made you think in different ways with every new puzzle thrown at you and having almost completed all the special worlds plus a ton of user made levels I think I'm qualified to say it makes a much better job at staying creative. By the looks of things it's going to take awhile until I've fully explored even half of the puzzle possibilities it seems.
With that said, for the amount of great gameplay Pushmo offers it's still a must have title.

Sorry for the name inconsistencies.
