Worked perfectly for me, got my games :D. Though like an idiot I accidentally used the same card I used on my Wii, damn near Bannerbombed my WiiU and corrupted it XD, nearly gave me a heart attack.
Just like the 3DS running DS mode in a sandbox so does the WiiU for Wii software. If you happen to corrupt your DS/Wii partition (someone did a test using a DS firmware bricker on the 3DS), you can restore it in the settings. Since everything Wii is running independently from the Wiiu, I wouldn't be surprised if we see exploitable games to install the homebrew channel popping up like on the Vita's PSP emulator.

I don't think we will, as exploits can be blocked on the IOS side. That's why I really want to get a copy of a Wii U Nand, or at least see the file structure.

Call me naive, but if you want to keep playing wii and GC backups, homebrew, emulators, etc, and none of the VC/Wiiware is playable on the WiiU gamepad, why would one actually want to transfer these things?

Now if you're being legit and never do any of the above stuff, then I totally get the merrit. But for me, I'm struggling to find a reason that once I get my WiiU, why I would want to transfer anything from my Wii to the WiiU, I'm definitely gonna be keeping my Wii once I get my WiiU, unless somehow we do find a way to exploit the thing, but I honestly just don't see that happening, at least not anytime soon.

If you have a nand backup and bootmii installed, there's nothing to lose.

Ah yes, I see what you're saying, but to have the games in two places would just be wasted space, though I certainly do have plenty to spare at the moment. I guess I can kinda see the point, but for me personally, I probably wont bother transferring, at least not for a while.

I guess I was being a little ignorant, we've all got our own reasons for how we game. But I'm definitely gonna keep my wii for homebrew, emulators, backups etc, so I just can't see any good reason to personally transfer anything at the moment. Maybe if they make an update to play the games on the gamepad, then, my opinion will change.

Question. Does the Wii delete content that it has not copied over once the transfer is complete?
If I have .wad games installed, will they remain on the Wii, or will they be deleted along with the legit ones?

The only stuff I've seen removed in any way from my machine were the channels and saves that were successfully transferred over. Everything else I had on there stayed as is. I feared some kind of format would happen or whatever but it didn't.

Mmh, that's very good to hear
I have a botched channel on my Wii that freezes the console when anything tries to delete it, and then screws over the data management pane upon reboot.
I don't want the channel trying to delete that, so I'm happy to hear that it won't.

Yeah it seems like it's really a basic setup actually. The machine(s) contact Nintendo's database, see what you're authorized to own, put that list together, grab what it can from your machine and move it over. Anything not able to be pulled over (because it's on your SD or you deleted it) can be downloaded again whenever you want later on the Wii U. Stuff that's not on this list simply get ignored. I will say that some game saves for full games I have installed via USB Loader were also transferred but that can just be deleted.

Hey, I have a question.

I owned a Wii on launch and downloaded some virtual console games (mario world, zelda etc) and a few years later I ended up selling it, I then bought a new Wii and found out I couldn't re-download the games on my new Wii as there locked to the console (even though my Nintendo website account shows I bought the games). So my question is, if I transfer my new Wii to a Wii U will I finally be able to download my original virtual console games? If it won't let me download my history, should I download the wads of the games and install them on my Wii then maybe the Wii U when it checks the database will see that I did buy those games originally?

Any help with this would be wicked,

Jimmie

No. You need your original Wii in hand for it to transfer those licenses. Sorry.

Thanks, I guess i'll have to try the installing the WAD's of the games and seeing if that will work, unless it just checks the consoles id instead of the game's, it really sucks though that games I bought won't transfer to a new console, it sucked I couldn't re-download them on my new wii too :(

I doubt that would work. Only the Wii itself that made the original purchases can tell Nintendo what you're authorized to download. Remember, the Wii doesn't have a typical 'account' system that stores that info other than the Wii itself. I'd still try as there's nothing to lose but be prepared for it not to work.

Taken directly from Nintendo's Support page then General Info on the left:

Can I Transfer Data from Multiple Wiis to a Single Wii U console?
Answer:

    • Yes, Wii Shop purchases and Wii Points will be combined. However, there are numerous items that will be replaced during this transfer process:

      • Download content and save data for software titles that exist on both systems will be replaced by the save data and add-on content from the last system to perform the transfer.

    • Mii characters in the Wii Menu of the target Wii U console and the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection ID of the target Wii U console will be replaced with the Mii characters and the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection ID of the last source system to perform the transfer.

Nintendo won't fix a hacked console. My Wii is hacked and has $200 in VC games. If I can get the VC games over to the Wii U, my investment will be protected, and I can continue to hack my Wii to my heart's content.

I was planning on transferring over the little amount of legit WiiWare/VC stuff I had to my WiiU, but I had one game that I did purchase, but accidentally deleted through unofficial hacked means years ago, and the Shop Channel says that even though I had spent money on it, my system did not have any record of it, so it is giving me a purchase price of 800 points instead of 0. I attempted to reinstall said game via WAD manager (so that there is a record on both the system and server that I had it), but it did not help and still requests 800 points. Am I S.O.L in that regard?
