The Copyright Alert System, a 6-strike-system designed towards casual pirates will be shutting down your internet and charging you $35 bucks to appeal it. If your were worried about people snooping through your shit, don't worry! It's both people and algorithms! So if you're using AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner Comcast, or Verizon for your ISP, change your providers right fucking now. Knowing the userbase of this site, we're all royally fucked.

That's the fucked up part, this isn't aimed at people like me and you who have access to that sort of thing. This is aimed at people who don't understand how to use that sort of thing. Old people, little kids, teenagers... People who understand how to pirate and do it all the time but don't know much about computers and privacy.

So yeah, a VPN will work until they do something about VPNs.

Before the inevitable freak outs, however, I think it's worth posting this:

For that there are laws in place and the content community will continue to fight that problem. This is the first time that there is a multi-stakeholder effort that tries to address these issues in a consumer-friendly way. If we are successful and we see a reduction in piracy and an increase in legal services, there may be a phase two. We need to take this first step and evaluate it."

Etc., etc. The exact merits of this program are of course debatable, but I think it's fair to say that this is not some freedom-killing endeavor (as the egregious Big Brother picture would suggest).

Anything encrypted should be fine. It's just unencrypted net access that'll get you fucked up. What I'm worried about is the colleges, schools, libraries, coffee shops, and people with open wifi networks. What the hell are they going to do without the net?

I really hate how the internet is being abused... By the very people who HELPED make it possible! Why is it that we can't have freedom online anymore! I just want to happily browse YouTube, GBATemp, etc.. What happened to the internet! What about 1995? When the internet was a famous idea?

I agree, ArgueCat1076! The internet has been forever fucked... Guess I'll kiss goodbye my pirating only to test a piece of software or games now! But NOBODY will take me away from the temp. I'm talking to you, hackers and governments!

I don't know what would stop you. This is aimed at stopping the average pirate who doesn't know much about piracy except "lol, limewire" and the pirate bay, not at stopping you from getting your cat videos, messaging forums, and porn.

If you want to pirate, securely at that, there's plenty a way to do it, and you won't look back. Even if your solution costs a little bit of money.

Yes, TOR would keep you safe (you could install tails on a SD card and run that of of it, it has a pre-configured TOR client, but you'll have to input the WiFi password every time and it doesn't store stuff automatically)

However, TOR is not designed for P2P, it's too slow and a lot of P2P traffic would only make it slower. The devs even discourage people to use P2P on TOR..
Someone should make a Web 3.0 with end to end encryption and privacy in mind...

I was going to consider pr0xy but, I don't know how that'd go with my router (cuz as you know, other people in my house use it) and as for TOR. Didn't really want to download new software onto my computer. Also, I'm gonna have to download a list of TOR .onion websites if i pick TOR for an option. As for VPN. Well, Would give it a try but, it may screw around with my router!

And we all know that I don't want VPN to hump my router. Nor do I want pr0xy to fuck my router up!

From what I heard, they are going after people who torrent stuff. Don't see how they are going after people who listen to stuff off of YouTube. As for "will be shutting down your internet and charging you $35 bucks to appeal it". They (depending on the Internet Service Provider) will re-direct you to a different page, voice mail and a few others. Not actually shutdown your Internet. If you want me to link you to where it says for torrents. I'll gladly post the links.

Edit: As for changing ISP where I live, majority of the providers I can switch to are on the six strike list. So, I am not going to use VPN because I have nothing to hide.

Looks extremely identical to the french "Hadopi", except it's six strikes instead of three.

Everyone thought it was the end of the internet, it's been more than a year since it's been applied... only one person had to pay 150€ for something that cost 12000000€ per year to the state (so efficient that they've seen their money reduce to 8000000€ now).

yeah, I'd rather have a strike or two if I'm being caught downloading stuff, rather than having to pay huge fines!

that's how it is right now, and this it's a lot more fucked up than the whole six-strikes thing.
I don't know if we can call this a good thing, but again, when I see how families get destroyed over such acts... I'll take strikes any day.
