Online/Miiverse

Video chat, other networking services require a Nintendo Network ID. Register with a password, your birthdate, gender, area of residence, and e-mail address. Your Nintendo Network ID can be used to exchange contact information in the same way as Friend Codes. eShop purchases are managed by Nintendo Network IDs, and can be played by other users on same system.

12 user accounts are allowed per Wii U system. Nintendo Network ID won't be limited to Wii U and will spread to other Nintendo platforms (presumably 3DS).

Miiverse available in all Wii U games. Ask community for help (setting to automatically hide spoilers), leave comments, read others thoughts, submit screenshots as you're playing and more. Support for accessing Miiverse on your smartphone or PC will come in 2013.

Ability to video-chat with friends using the camera on the controller. Can doodle on screen together.

New Super Mario Bros U:

  • 1280x720 resolution
  • Has "source lighting" from fireballs and star-lifts.
  • Similar world-map to Super Mario World. Different paths in world-map.
  • Features off-screen play.
  • Ask Miiverse community for help in getting Star-Coins.
  • New characters/enemies (NABBIT)
  • Can use R button instead of A during off-screen play + touchscreen.
  • Boost Mode, Time Attack, Coin Battle Mode.
  • Ability to edit coin-placements in stages (for Coin Battle Mode I assume)

Wii U Menu

  • 3DS-style grid menu with WaraWara Plaza (Miiverse) separated between both screens.
  • Can switch menu to TV or GamePad screen using button on top-right corner.

Home Menu

  • Press Home Menu to access applications that you can multi-task with (Friend's List, Miiverse, eShop, Internet Browser, Nintendo TVii and more).
  • Sync Wii Remotes (perhaps additional GamePad in the future) and view currently connected controllers
  • View instruction manual of current application/game

I'll just copy paste my write-up from before.

Nintendo Network ID

-Account based limited to 12 accounts per system, the first thing you do when turning on the console is selecting user since everything from savegames, friends and settings are personal. (no friend codes)
-User name and personal information
-Gamer title, for example Advanced Gamer as shown in the Direct.
-Followers (without being registered friends)
-People you are following (again without being registered friends)
-Number of times people empathized with you.
-Friend requests are done via the PM functionality of the service.
-Game specific information will be linked and shared with others through your ID, for example accomplishments (up to individual devs to implement, not a global system) and the games you're currently playing.
-Profile comments
-Will also be used for the eShop and future third party online services, whatever that could end up being...
-You will have a page where you can see the activities of friends and other people you're following.
-Can be accessed during mid game and without the TV.

Miiverse
It's like a forum basically where you post comments by either typing, writing or drawing.
-Spoiler tags
-Can also be accessed during mid game and with the TV off.
-Nintendo Network ID is integrated in Miiverse.

Wii U Chat

-Video chat on the gamepad only, or with TV+gamepad.
-Uses built in mic and camera, surprisingly good quality as shown when Iwata was video chatting with Reggie across the Atlantic.
-Draw stuff while chatting.
-When you're playing a game the home button will glow when you receive a call.

eShop

-Online game distribution platform.

Browser

-Browser that supports video.
-Youtube works.
-Browse on the gamepad alone, or both.
-Works mid-game.

Here's a screen of a NN ID profile card

Read my write up. Friendcodes are gone, you can add random people you're following on miiverse too by PM'ing them. Everything is done with your NN ID.

They have a feature where you can report offensive content and a Miiverse staffer will investigate. If it's an offensive post, you'll be put under "watch" where any future posts by you will have to be approved by Miiverse staffers (with a delay up to 30 minutes apparently).

That's just for random people on the warawara plaza, not people you've added.

I used to be annoyed by the dick drawings, but they've slowly developed into their sort of art form. Now I can appreciate the artistry and craft behind each one.

The internet will ruin you that way.

well that's not a great sign, is it ? I mean, if a game like NSMB doesn't run in 1080p, what will ?
AFAIK it was known for a while NSMBU wouldn't be 1080p. Scribblenauts will be, though (then again, that's not exactly the most graphics-heavy game there is).
