Ace3DS Plus looks like it's the cheapest at the moment.
Does it play the games I mentioned?
The Ace3DS is using hacked/unofficial firmware updates (Wood does NOT support it), which means it's support (ability to play games) could stop any time that YWG (the actual author of Wood) or RGF (the person lotso f carts take game fixes from) figure out how to protect their software from use like this.

We see flash carts using hacked firmwares (Wood or otherwise) die out all the time, don't go for it. Go for an officially-supported cart.

All of them can use cheats, but I do not recommend the Ace3DS/+. That cart has a high chance of not being able to use updates in the future, since the Author of Wood is not happy about unofficial ports of his software and takes steps to stop it.

If you get it, support dies, and you complain, people are just going to laugh at you for having picked a cart without official support.

So I went to zhuzhuchina.com and did a search for R4i Gold. A few different versions popped up. How do I know what type to get for my friends 3DS
E, G, C, D?

the A-B-C-D for our r4i are only for our internal use, due many r4i clone when we add them we add a symbol in the title , when we see order product list we know directly which flashcard customer buy, There is even product id too, but for R4i we prefers to put directly something on title too , however there is website name too so should be easy to understand which flashcard to choose.

I'd like to know which cart has the best rom compatibility and all.

Some of the games I want to play:
Fire Emblem
New Super Mario Bros.
Mario cart
Kirby Canvas Curse
Pokemon series
and some other Japanese game.

go with an r4i gold 3ds from r4ids.cn it's nativally supported by wood firmware. has plenty of compatibility with the games you're looking to play. and it has worked with current firmwares that the 3DS has put out, with quick updates to keep continued use.

This is not an anti-piracy discussion thread!

There was a very specific question asked. Answer the question or GTFO. If you're against piracy that's fine. but this thread is not the place to discuss it.

How I see it:

All bellow info is available on several posts spread around GBAtemp.

DSTOW on 3DS

Pros:
  • Best card regarding features
  • Best option regarding support
  • Best option regarding GBA emulation
  • Ability to update firmware from blocked device (with risks involved)

Cons:
  • Expensive
  • Some card hardware revisions have issues on the 3DS ( not detected on 3ds issues) <- this is a must check out before buying a DSTWO!
  • Battery drain (however actually some users say it has better drain that retail cards.

I've been wondering to those who own a DSTWO. Been reading a few comments in the stores. Where did you buy it and is it sturdy? Reading about people who's springs for the SD card breaks after a month. Is it just bad luck for them and is it built well? Sorry if this has been answered, just on my mind before I place my order to get one.

Can someone explain to me why my AK2i doesn't work on the latest update for the 3DS, but the DSTwo does? Sorry for the noob question, I'm just trying to see if it's worth upgrading from my AK2i to a DSTwo if they DSTwo is currently working for the 3DS

Well the update for the 3DS blocks flashcarts, and you have to wait for the update from the Ace team. Im pretty sure the Acekard team has slowly faded into the background, and official updates are few and far in between, if at all.

There was a big step forward in the 3DS firmware in blocking flashcarts somewhat recently. Something due to the way the 3DS reads the kart's "Header" whatever that means. Lots of carts were simply useless after that. The DSTWO and a handful of R4i's were ok, but i think the Acekard has been left in the dust.

http://hackmii.com/2010/02/lawsuit-coming-in-3-2-1/

The Acekard 2i ran out of internal space for the data it needs to respond with (it's stored on the Acekard 2i itself, NOT THE MICROSD). Most other carts did as well.
