Ok guys, news about the translation project.

Hacking part:

The text is always extracted to XML files.
  • ☑ Extract text from scripts (Script editor)
  • ☑ Extract text from Event and Movie folders.
  • ☑ Extract text from System folder.
  • ☑ Extract text from ARM9 and Overlays9 files.
  • ☑ Remove vertical space of furigana.
  • ☑ Add two lines of movies subtitles.
  • ☑ Decrypt / encrypt files (some files inside System folder).
  • ☒ In process. Change keys in the game keyboard.
  • ☒ In process. Import textures files (I have to do it in Tinke).

Spanish translation:
Members
  • Jefelin: Header, translator.
  • Ayako: Translator.
  • Xulikotony: Revisor
  • Pleonex: Rom hacker

Jefelin record a game play of the full game and they are translating the script following the story order, in this way they got more context and we are able to do frequent test of the current translation.

Progress:
  • ~20% Translated scripts (now translating Goronel city)
  • 2 / 1556 Translated images.
  • ~1% Other text files.

Public patch will be release when the translation is finished. NO BETA PATCH WILL BE RELEASED.
We're testing the translation, but anyway when it's done, we will choose the betatester, please don't ask to be one of them.
I will release the tools when we finish it.

As you can see, the spanish translation is in the way, with good progress. I would like to translate this game to english too.

Oh you changed the y coordinates ? nice heh
Well, actually no. After some time debugging and investigating, I found that the easier way is change the height of the furigana font (rubi8.nftr) because this value is used to get the Y coord of the normal text below. So all the text of the game is now higher and look better (and I got the possibility to add a second line of substitles after changing some code)

Good Idea, I would have done it the other way around but that's good stuff =p

I assume this means that the Spanish translation is taking priority over the English translation then? That's a little disappointing as a native English speaker, but I guess beggars can't be choosers. I can read a bit of Spanish, but probably not enough to understand all the Spanish in this large of a game if it were translated only into Spanish. I'll be busy with the ps3 version either way for a long time, so I guess I don't really mind having to wait a little longer to see the DS version of Ni No Kuni in English. Still, I hope English speakers won't have to wait to much longer due to most of this team focusing on the Spanish translation.

ok, i see the point :)
pretty awesome news on the editor front
i, on the other side, feel pretty demotivated on translation further parts of the book since the announcement of the wizards edition of the ps3 game with a physical english copy of the book

I agree with you there. I think we all know how people will read the book if they don't buy the Wizards's edition. Unless the book has dramatic change, it should be good enough for playing the ds game with.

damn it, i preordered it!
at some point in time, i will have to get a bluray player, and i wont buy a regular bluray player.
(funny thing: one of my friends has a ps3, just for blurays)

Great decision =D I remember that I bought a PS3 when it first went down to $299(USD) for the now overdue Kingdom Hearts 3 and Ratchet and Clank. Now, it's all the original ip games like Ni No Kuni, Flower, Journey, and The Unfinished Swan that make me glad to own a PS3. I still want to play the DS version of Ni No Kuni in English very much, but I am glad that the PS3 version was the one chosen to be brought over since it's definitely the superior version of the game. Anyway, I think you made a great choice to get a ps3. Be sure to PM me when you create a psn account so I can add you as a friend.

On the wiki it says there were complications translating the book and will onlly be released in japenese for ds ps3 gets english though.
Well obviously that's not the case anymore since the exact same book is being translated for the wizards edition of the ps3 version. The ds game will probably still stay untranslated though since it's on an outdated platform, which is why this translation project exists.

Hey guys.
If anyone feels like playing an english version of the game.
I've translated the game up till when oliver first enters ninokuni (since that's all i've translated so far).
This is just kind of a one man thing so everything was done by me (i.e. rom hacking(my first time doing it), tranlation and image editing).
I'll probably stop if a team decides to translate the game.
As for runes that come from the book, I have sort of been changing the image on the top screen to show all available runes, but that might be a while.
Screenshots: none for now, you'll just have to trust me that it works, but if you do want some then I can.

The link for the patch file is in the spoiler below.

patch using xdelta (i.e. xdelta3-3.0.4-x86-32.exe -d -s ninokuni.nds patchfile ninokuni_patched.nds)
(I know I should probably put xdelta in my local path, but I'm lazy
