Why does the 3D suck ass in this game?
The rendering method for the game is still 2D, not 2.5D.
3D models are used for the characters but everything each is pre-rendered graphics, 2D bitmaps.
They use these very effectively actually, for coin animations or anything that rotates or scales, these graphics always look smooth and detailed.

Back to the point, the fact the game is more than likely using the same 2D engine from NSMB Wii is what limits the possibility for a strong 3D effect, instead they just made a blurring effect for depth.
Other 3DS software also adjusts the image rather than the depth as you use the 3D slider, 3D Classics Kirby's Adventure for example does not just depth, but darkens the background.

Well there definitely won't be a downloadable demo for NSMB2, Nintendo seems to have a problem with letting 1st party title demos exist anywhere else other than demo carts:

The fact that they have some sort of problem putting 1st party title demos on the eShop, puzzles me. Nintendo has a working demo distribution system with the eShop, but chooses to distribute those demos physically, which would cost so much more than the server costs of distributing it digitally. It makes less sense than the choice to make kirby and pit angry on the USA/EUR box art for their respective games, but happy on the JPN box art.

The closest thing to a 1st party demo from the eShop is Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and that's really a SEGA title.
Scratch that, Nintendogs + Cats has a eShop demo.

I think the reasoning behind publishing an eShop demo is about a lack of certainty of a game's success. Physical demo carts appear to be for retailers to run on kiosks and little else.

I just got this game from newEgg today and it's actually pretty hard. When I say hard, I don't mean getting from start to finish, but I mean maximizing your chances of getting all the coins, making sure you get all the star coins, try to retain your power ups. Adding the coin thing is when ingenious. Some people will play and blaze through it, but others will have mass amounts of difficulty trying to get every last coin.

I think the point is, NSMBII, Mario Kart etc are going to sell regardless. There's more chance of hyped up gamers downloading the demos and going "actually, you know what... maybe I won't" than there is of uncertain punters downloading it and going "ahhh, yea I want this!"

Plus why put time and efforet into making a stripped down demo of a game that you know is just going to basically sell itself anyway

They still made a demo version of the game, see the picture in my post, it's a NSMB2 demo cart. And what difference would demo card distribution have to eShop demo distribution. They didn't release the Mario Tenis demo on the eShop, so I went in store to try it. And I thought it was shit. I don't think I would have thought any different if I downloaded the demo. If they didn't want people to be potentially turned off by a game demo, they shouldn't make one in the first place, kiosk or eShop. Especially when the game is guaranteed to sell itself.

@Nintendo, playing demos for potentially bad games on a kiosk console isn't going to make me more likely to buy it. So cut the crap (and manufacturing costs), and release demos, if at all, on the eShop.

EDIT:Extra info

Yes but a demo cart that's to be used at specific promo locations/events and a downloadable demo that ANYBODY can access is a totally different deal.

That's your general game shops, most people will visit those places to buy the game. So anyone walking into those shops will be able to play that demo, until it's cycled out with a new demo. Like you said not everyone will be able to access the demo, compare to eShop demos, but a large majority of people planning to buy NSMB2 will have access to the kiosk demo. That's not the same as the volume of users at promo locations/events were demos are showcased for less than a week.

Have you ever gone into a store, with the intent of buying a game, then seen there was a demo so wasted 5 minutes of your life playing the demo before going to the counter to buy it?

If you have then cool you. But I'd imagine you're in the minority.

When the first NSMB came out, I went to a K-Mart to buy a DS lite and I was convinced to buy to buy it after playing a demo, same with the 3DS and pilotwings, and with my cousins Wii, and my brothers PS3. Like it or not, people go to stores and actually play demos and that usually affects their choice when it comes to buying it. Imagine it happens quute often seeing how the stores wouldn't continue to have the kisoks if nobody used them.

I only really do it with Nintendo 3DS games, since the I'd made the mistake of buying so many crap DS games in the past. I'm so glad I was turned off Star Fox 64 3D and Mario Tennis because of the demos(IMO they are 'meh' games which deserve bargain bin treatment), probably would have bought them otherwise and regretted it later. But yeah thinking about it more, I'm probably the minority.
