Game Boy Advance had two revisions
DS the same.
3DS will probably have one or two revisions.
A lot was fixed with 3DS XL, but it's still a variant.
I bet that 2 years from now we will see 3DS and 3DS XL revisions

Yes, it was. Officially, too.
Source? I can't find anything that says that. All I saw of the AGS-101 model is that the box advertised "now with a BRIGHTER backlit screen!"
Backlit Model (AGS-101)

The pearl blue AGS-101 GBA SP model that featured an improved backlit screen.[11]
In September 2005, around the time of the Game Boy Micro's release, Nintendo released an improved version of the Game Boy Advance SP in North America, featuring a brighter backlit screen instead of the previous version's frontlit screen. The new model can be distinguished by the following features:
The box states "Now with a BRIGHTER backlit screen!" to distinguish the new model from the older, frontlit models.
The backlit SP has the Model Number AGS-101 on the label on the bottom of the unit, whereas the original frontlit SP has the Model Number AGS-001[12]
The small button at the top center of the console's lower face is now referred to in the manual as the "Brightness Switch" and selects between two levels of brightness, "Normal"(Low) and "Bright"(High) with no off setting. On the frontlit models this button turned the frontlight on or off only. With the backlight set to "Normal"(Low) the brightness still surpasses the original AGS-001 with the frontlight on.
The North American backlit version comes in three standard colors: "Pearl Blue", "Pearl Pink" and "Graphite" (a greyer version of Onyx Black). There were also two Toys "R" Us exclusive backlit models; a "SpongeBob SquarePants" model[13] and a "Limited Edition Pikachu" model.
In 2006, the AGS-101 backlit model also saw a very limited release in Europe.[14] Few models made it to market, likely due to the release of the Game Boy Advance-compatible Nintendo DS one year prior. The European version was released in "Surf Blue"[15] as well as re-issued "Pink" and "Tribal" editions.
Unlike the North American release, the European box does not feature any prominent text to distinguish the backlit models from the older frontlit models. In addition, only the "Surf Blue" color was unique to the AGS-101, the other two colors "Pink" and "Tribal" had already been released as frontlit models - for these reasons it can be very difficult to identify a European backlit SP. Apart from the AGS-101 model number on the base of the unit, the only other obvious distinguishing feature of the European backlit model is the large picture of the Game Boy Advance SP featured on the front of the box. (The European frontlit models of "Pink" and "Tribal" only feature small pictures of the Game Boy Advance SP on the sides of the box and Flower/Tattoo patterns on the front respectively.)
So far the European AGS-101 model has only been reported in Denmark, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland so it may not have been released in all European countries.\

We'll get another revision but not anytime soon.

I would expect it to have 4" screens (middle-ground between 3DS and XL with a decent PPI, 116), improved 3D effect (assuming parallax barrier tech has advanced enough) and...a second analog stick.

If games start supporting the CPP then we will see a revision soon (same size as original 3ds with a built in 2nd stick, better ergonomic design), if there isnt much support for the CPP then a brand new console, but thats probably in about 3 years from now.

Nintendo wouldn't dare to do a revision with twin sticks YET as they know that it will fuck those early adopters once again.

Or they might implement it on a successor.

3 years till a new console? No way. Didn't the original DS last something like 6-8 years?

Well, DSi was released 3 years after DS lite.

The DSi was just a DS revision with extra features and something like only half-a-dozen games that took advantage of those extra features (unless you include DSiWare). it wasn't an entirely new console.

and Nintendo said they started working on a Wii successor like 2 years after the Wii's release. so i doubt Nintendo working on a new handheld now means we'll get it anytime soon.

That's normal. Companies are always working on their next product. It's likely still in the design stage.

I thought you were talking about a revision, not a entirely new console. My bad. :P

DSi was really a revision. Cameras, Actual OS Menu, WPA2 WiFi and a Store.

3DS LL/XL is more of an alternative than a revision, just like the DSi XL. The only massive thing about it is the 90% bigger screens and slight improvement in battery. Other than that, it functions exactly the same as the 3DS and has the same OS/games.

If they even release a 3DS with two Circle pads, it'll be a next-gen handheld with 3DS/DS/ware backwards compatibility.

I don't think there'll ever be a 3DSi. But I wouldn't mind one if it had Carl Zeiss optics. I'm talking about crystal quality HD 3D videos that would make amateur movie makers and photographers WANT ONE. And true HD 3D topscreen. And HD 3DSi games that would warrant the hardware. And of course, a good jump in specs. Specs that will make it VERY HARD TO IGNORE.

I wouldn't mind a price point higher than $250 if it's got hardware to back it up, but no more than $300.

got a pic of this so called "GBA SP Lite" ?
I believe that's supposed to be the GBA SP Brighter.

As long as it does indeed keep both DS and 3DS backward compatibility, I wouldn't mind either.

Adding an extra analog does NOT equal "next gen," especially when there's already a peripheral for the original that gives it the same functionality...

One thing to remember is the reasons many companies put out revisions of their handhelds. Sure you sometimes get better performance, but similar to consoles after release often there are new design decisions that can be made to reduce the price of manufacturing. That is one of the main incentives, if you can make a part more cheaply now, or there is a component that can be replaced with a cheaper one that wasn't available or practicable in the beginning it becomes a good way to either offer a price cut, or to maximize profits.
