I've been out of the PSP scene for a couple years now, so I thought I would ask before just jumping in and updating to the latest CFW.

I'm on 5.50 Prom-4(old fat PSP). Should I update or will most things play on this firmware? And if I should update, according to this thread it's showing 6.20 Pro (permanent) and 6.60 Pro (temporary). Are these indeed the latest?

I never even knew that there was a permanent and temporary, so that shows you how long I haven't been involved.

Couple more questions. If I should update can I update straight from 5.50 Prom-4 to the latest, or do I have to update to an early version first and then to the latest? And finally, I'm guessing 6.20 Pro (permanent) is what I should update to and not the temporary one? I don't want to have to keep reinstalling anything so I'm guessing permanent is what I should go for...

Thank you for any help.

Just follow the guide to install 6.60 PRO permanently using the cIPL. GEN was never much good so there's zero reason to stick there.

What exactly is cIPL? I only ask because I see nothing in the guide on 6.60 permanent, just 6.20 permanent, and nowhere do I see a mention of cIPL(although I do suffer from temporary blindness at times)...

And one final question, I will definitely want to first update to 6.60 OFW before updating to 6.60 CFW, right? I mean, I don't want to skip the OFW step and go right to the CFW step?

Anyways, I appreciate the help.

cIPL is the method of installing a perm 6.60 firmware. It's not mentioned in the guide directly because if you try to force an IPL change on any PSP model later than about halfway through the 2000 series, you'll end up with an unrecoverable brick, but the cIPL folder is included in the 6.60 download for those that know what they're doing.

Now that the PRO team has the proper checks in place (to prevent bricks on unsupported models) I thought about modifying the guide to account for it, but that would make the situation more complex than it is and the 6.20 permanent method works on every single PSP model anyways (unlike the 6.60 method), and any 6.60 models that can't be downgraded to 6.20 naturally are also ones that can't use the cIPL method.

If there was a huge functional difference between 6.20 and 6.60 as far as hacking is concerned I'd change the guide, but as far as it is now I don't want to make it more complex (tossing in all the PSP motherboard model version check shit that usually takes up 2/3rds of a PSP hacking a guide), so I'll likely just edit it to mention that if you have a 1K you can use 6.60 perm, and if you have a 2K you can try it and see if it's supported or not (as the motherboard model is readable via software running with higher rights, like PRO install software does).

Ah, I see. Thank you very much for typing up all that information for me, Rydian. I believe I have a 1K PSP, but since there's not much difference between 6.20 and 6.60 then I'll go for 6.20 permanent then.

And just to be clear on my other question, I do indeed want to update to 6.20 OFW first before going to 6.60 CFW, right? I ask because I could have sworn way back when when I was up on all this that I never had to first update from the CFW to the OFW to get to the latest CFW. It was just CFW to CFW. But then again that was a long time ago and my memory is pretty bad... I mean I know it says it in your guide to first update to OFW but I just want to make sure before I do it.

Anyways, thanks again for all the info. It's been a lot of help.

Ok...so I'm not going crazy then...

Thank you, Rydian. I'm gonna go ahead and update to 6.20 soon. I really do appreciate all your help...
