Everyone i personally know thats even slightly interested in gaming will be buying a Wii, goes without saying that the machine will conquor Japan. But this time round it could even go as far as to conquer the USA and Europe. It'd be nice to see Nintendo back on top in all teritories
wub.gif
that'd be so nice! i'm definately buying a wii - don't know about others though. but in my opinion a wii will be the perfect system for someone already owning *insert-whatever-console* and who likes to play something new or just different from time to time...

- yep!

Do you think Harrison would've said the same thing if Moore didn't say it first? I get the feeling that Sony is only doing it because they realized that Nintendo will be successful and wants to debunk whatever positive rep Microsoft got for sucking up to Nintendo fans.

Sony looks like they are crashing and burning REALLY REALLY fast XD. When even SONY thumbs up Nintendo, the apocolypse is coming. At least when Peter Moore thumbs up Nintendo, they have the "You can buy us and Wii for the price of ONE Sony!" Going for them.

Since Wii isn't their competitor (at least not directly), Microsoft and Sony are the only ones contending with the "My system is prettier!" contest; as Nintendo sits back and goes "Mmmm...money..." So, to beat out the competition, they use the Wii as a way of leverage to gain a necessary boost over the other.

I never thought either company could sink so low to make their moves obvious, it's just so very sad.

I actually feel bad for Sony. Despite hardware that didn't live up to the competitors they were still king of the last generation. And then everything started go go wrong:

* Crash Bandicoot (their unofficial mascot) showed up on non-Sony systems.

* Grand Theft Auto (3-D era) went from a Sony exclusive to something with extra content and better graphics on the Xbox (making it the prefered GTA system). And now the GTA series is apparently being launced as a Microsoft and Sony exclusive title.

* Square-Enix made up with Nintendo, and instead of porting it's classic games to the PSP, they came to the GBA and DS. Heck, Nintendo is getting Final Fantasy III as an exclusive, a game that's never come to North America.

* Solid Snake will be appearing in Super Smash Bros Brawl, which means Sony is losing its grasp on the MGS series. And if what the trailers suggest is true, the next MGS will be the last one anyway. Which will mean Sony losing one of its biggest sellers. Apparently Hideo Kojima also begged Sakurai to put Snake into Super Smash Bros. Melee. Obviously he refused, but apparently the begging continued when it came time for Brawl.

* Nintendo gained the core Resident Evil series exclusively (although when exclusive licenses run out, the games can be ported to other systems).

* The PS3 will most likely be the last next-gen system to be released, meaning it will be behind its competitors. And if Microsoft was serious, they'll be releasing Halo 3 on the same day. Popular theory suggests the only reason the PS2 was king last-gen was due to coming out first, and backwards compatibility.

* The PSP was over-priced at launch, making it something the average person couldn't (or didn't want to) afford at release. I mean really, it was more than a console for goodness sake. Which may be one of the many reasons alot of people turned to the DS.

* The PS3's price is too expensive for the average person, meaning that the first couple of years of sales will be terrible outside of the hardcore gaming circles.

* Final Fantasy XI, one of the PS2's most popular MMORPGs is coming to Xbox 360. And is already out for PC. Both versions are considered superior to the PS2 version. It also doesn't look like there's a PS3 remake in sight.

* Their last online services were a joke, they seem to be looking to improve them with the PS3. But people are already more prepared to accept Xbox live when it comes to online (non-PC) gaming.

* The PS3 budget version will not include backwards compatibility. Which means people who wanted to buy that version will most likely not buy either version (due to lack of features on the budget version, and the price of of normal version). Backwards compatibility was one of the major draws for both PS2, and PS3.

* There's a chance Sony will lose the next-gen DVD format war, in which case their PS3 blu-ray functionality becomes useless outside of games (all companies involved should have made that compromise, this will only end badly). There's a good chance blu-ray will fail, due to HD DVD getting the point of what it is across perfectly. It's a high definition digital video disc. So it's more familiar to the average consumer. And then there's how HDDVD is already out, whereas we won't see blu-ray for months. The average consumer doesn't care how much a movie dsc holds, they just want high quality media with a familiar name and a good price point.

* Sony doesn't have a virtual console service (that I'm aware of) like Nintendo, or to a lesser extent... Microsoft. I for one thing this is going to be a huge market in the coming years.

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of at the moment. They're losing ground fast. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the two (Sony or Microsoft) died by the end of this generation.

i couldnt help smiling while reading that Ace Gunman, sorry to any sony fans here but I really do hope the ps3 is a flop

While I admit my PS2 isn't my favorite console, I'm no Sony hater. Actually, I don't care about them either way. As I've said many times in the past, I'm about the games, not the hardware (although cool innovative hardware like the DS is always nice). I would just as soon buy my Final Fantasy games (etc) for the Xbox 360. I don't buy game consoles for the brand, I buy them for the games. Infact, I do hope Sony dies this generation, then Microsoft can take them under their wing and they can release a joint venture game console that plays PS1, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and PS3 games all in one. "PlayStation X" anyone?

the main problem I have with playstations is the way sony operates and openly takes its fans for fools, there are some games on playstation I did enjoy and sony themselves made some of the best games on the ps2, but thats what I'd prefer they be, just game developers

I really can't stand the viral marketing the various corporate shills are using at the moment whenever the six hundred dollars issue is brought up. Ever seen some dimwit answer "WELL I GOT A JOB YOU HOBO AND I'LL BUY A PS3 FOR 800$ ON EBAY" ?
Eh? I think I preferred being called a kiddie last generation. I'm not spending 600$/€ on a *toy* just to make myself feel superior. That's what my rolex watch is for

$599 is cheap for what you get.

7800GTX about $500+
3.2ghz CPU about $200+ (Not even a cell too!)
40gb HDD about $20

Total= $720
PS3 Value + controlelr and BD-player = $600
BD-player= $1000

I'll be getting a ps3 because I know it will be an RPG rich system
tongue.gif
and I'll also be picking up a wii.

Well that's what I've been saying all along. It's a terrible price for a game console, but an amazing deal for a multimedia system.

you're just so right, ace! and comparing to people paying US$ 600++ for a PSP (at launch) it's not that pricy, is it? i payed EUR 400 for my psp too to get it *near* launch (and personally, i don't care, or at least i'm not whining about that fact

The PSP was the worst console i have ever bought. And i even had a 1.50 so i could download games and shit @ release. The PSP+accessories cost me nearly €400, luckely i sold my system too some poor sucker right before the price fell, only lost €100.

I also had a xbox360 preordered, but i cancelled that some days before release, and what a good decision that was!

Cant wait for the wii, its gonna rock our world!

Not really. One thing that has rubbed me the wrong way lately is everyone going on about how a great deal it is because it includes a Blueray player and point out its $1000 for a standalone player.

But no one really points out that $1000 is a pretty bad price for a player, especially one for a not yet on the market format which is competing against another equally capable format. And HD-DVD drives are available for $499 in some places already, how long do you think that $1000 price tag is going to last?

Either way, Sony is banking a lot of money on this move so I guess we'll just see!

It may be a bad price for a player, but DVD players cost the same thing when they were originally released for a loooong time. So at the moment the PS3 is a good deal, taking into consideration the multimedia capabilities. And the thing is, it will stay a good deal because they will go down in price together. By the time a new blu-ray player is $500, a new PS3 will be down to $300 (not exact numbers, but you get the idea). Prices go down as manufacturers learn how to get the most bang for their buck, and as materials go down in price. So long story short: the PS3 and blu-ray player will go down in price together. That is the nature of all electronics.

Sony is banking on the assumption that people will be able to look at the PS3 and see a "bargain" priced Blu-Ray player. While in comparison to the...one...other standalone Blu-Ray player on the market the PS3 is a good deal, the fact of the matter is that the world just isnt ready for another multimedia format. DVD is just reaching its peak, its the de facto standard in most homes now, and many consumers already have very large DVD collections. In essence, the benefits Blu-Ray brings, which as it seems is only true HD video, for the majority of consumers right now just does not justify the cost. If Blu-Ray is no big deal for the consumer, the PS3 is screwed, since people will be evaluating it, and its price, as a gaming system.

This is not in any way comparable to the VHs to DVD era; the benefits DVD brought to the table over VHS were numerous enough that there were many early adopters of the technology, Sony took a gamble on this with their PS2, and came out strong. Since Blu-Ray doesnt offer very many things over DVD, far less are willing to pay the high price for bleeding edge tchnology.

Sony banked on the popularity of HD to justfiy their consoles cost, and so far, with 75% of American homes without HD sets, they might have lost the bet they made with chance.

I agree, Kyoji.

In my opinion, Sony is releasing the PS3 with the next Beta-Max. Wippie!

I think you're wrong about that, there is already a Blu-ray burner on the market, and no HD-DVD burner has been released (or media, or a timetable for the release of such)

Maybe you remember that the first CD players were in the $1000 dollar range, and believe it not, VHS players were in the $1000 range at one time also. My dad payed $700 for a vcr in 1986.

It seems to me that the system that is the easiest to copy games for is usually the most successful (except the poor Dreamcast which didn't even need any hardware mod to play copies on it)

The price of blank media is going to figure into the piracy/success issue also. I bought a 1x CD burner that cost $500 dollars, and the disks were around $3 each (for CD-R's) I bought a DVD burner for $500 and the blanks were around $3. If the Blu-ray disks are down around $3 when the burners drop to under $500 (assuming that there is a PS3 mod available at the time) Sony should do alright.

What I think is interesting is how all 3 companies are touting HD and 1080i and HDMI...How many people have HD capable televisions/monitors? The price of those have yet to come down to an acceptable price level for the average blue-collar person to buy, so again, all three of them are touting a feature that only a small percentage of the population can even use!

I have to admit, the Wii is looking pretty good at this point, I have been gaming for a long time (PONG was my first console) and I have become bored with the state of console gaming, it's all the same for X360 and PS3, one just costs a whole lot more. The Wii on the other hand is going to be more affordable, and since the graphics aren't going to be that intense on the games that are supposed to bring in the masses, it doesn't matter that your mom doesn't own an HDTV.

I don't think I know more than 2 people that have HDTV's, What about the rest of you?
Maybe there's already been a poll done, although it might not be too recent.

(Sorry about the book...I've been abstaining from comment for quite awhile)

Just for the record, Nintendo has never 'touted' HD; in fact they are against it purely because they don't feel there is a big enough base of people ready to utilize it.
And they are right. 25% of American homes have an HD set...I'd be willing to bet that the number of people within that group willing to drop 600 on a PS3 is quite low.

Huh? I thought it was the other way around? I haven't heard of a burner but HD-DVDs and players have been in stores for a while. However, Blu-ray still isn't out as far as I know.
