Whoa. I'm a little bit confused. Is this the PS2 version remade for the DS and does it have any relation to Xenogears? What a fine slew of DS releases.

I really hope this does get a US release date I'd buy it for sure. Shame to make such a great game and only release it in Japan. Trying the release out now.

Man, there must be a TON of text to read in this game. The FMV and story sequences are REAL long on the PS2 version, wonder how well that translates to a portable format.

I've heard that xenosaga is not nearly as good as xenogears.
Xenogears had more action sequences and a more down-to-earth combat system. Xenosaga was very heavy on the cutscenes (more cutscenes that gameplay), has a more obscure combat system, and little variety in the soundtrack. I don't know about Xenosaga II though since I never played it.

Anyone got a good impression of this yet? Did it translate well to the DS or is it 70 minutes of reading a story, then move into a room, then reading another 20 minutes of story, then turning on a switch and reading another 30 minutes of story?

You heard correct! Xenosaga can't hold a candle to Xenogears. I'll feel bad when Xenosaga 4 comes out (if it does) and the story links with Xenogears (if they keep the chapters right, if Xenosaga 1 and 2 are Chapters 1 and 2.) Xenogears was dripping with religous undertones and had a wonderful plot and story that developed nicely around a very innovative battle system. If you've never played Xenogears then I recommend you do the game will be one of the better games you've played. However, if you play RPGs mostly for the graphics or battle summons then you'll be dissapointed and I suggest you stick with Final Fantasy(VII+). Xenogears has a wonderfully long story and will captivate you from start to finish! Xenosaga is a disgrace to the series.

Actually, it's a little known fact that Square still holds all rights to the Xenogears franchise, and that Xenosaga, while originally intended to be the prequel series, does not officially have anything to do with Xenogears, aside from serving as an homage to the original title. In fact, as of September 2005, Namco has stated that Xenosaga III is the final game in the series, and no more will be made, so there will never be a tie-in between the two games. This can be viewed as a good or a bad thing, as Square still has all rights to the Xenogears universe, and could eventually decide to make its own prequel/sequel series. It's unlikely, but it's an option.

Those two pretty much explain the whole situation. So no, officially, the games are not connected to Xenogears. They're just tribute.
