Though the PlayStation Vita is still suffering from low sales in Japan, Sony has been encouraged by the improved fortunes of the 3DS. That’s according to SCEE president and CEO Jim Ryan, who told MCV that Nintendo’s success bodes well for the portable market.

“One of the encouraging things about 3DS’ sales performance at Christmas is that it is confounding the naysayers who say that there is no room in the market for a dedicated handheld gaming device,” he told MCV in an exclusive interview.
“And to that extent we were encouraged by how 3DS did over the last month.

But doesn’t the appetite for 3DS pose a danger to Vita? Apparently not.
“There are two distinct markets,” Ryan added.
“The quality, the immersiveness, the richness of the experience that we believe we are going to offer on Vita, way exceeds anything that we believe to be available on any smartphone.”
You can read MCV’s full interview with Ryan in tomorrow’s issue (which should be with subscribers today) or read the full thing online tomorrow..

Every console so far has taken a few months to get a solid base of users and content. Nice to see that kind of commenting (down to earth yay!).

Having the good fortune of a friend having one, I must say it's a lovely device and I hope it picks up soon. Now bring me some games I want and I'll throw some money in Sony's direction.

Yeah, go kill that "handheld has no futur!" everyone is saying.
I like it when Sony say things like that.

Quote the whole article next time chris - It's more a commentary on Smartphone competition against dedicated consoles

if they want to improve they need to lower the price and get some games on the system

It hasn't even had a Western launch so your second point is slightly redundant. The Vita's main competitor has been out for a year now and it still lacks more than a handful of games of note. That's pretty bad...

Personally i hope the vita becomes a success. Its truley a great piece of hardware leagues above the 3ds and with the dual analogs its certainly gonna be a fps haven. However if sony doesnt lower those prices upon the north american release i cant picture people spending 300$ + for a handheld device when they can get an xbox360/ps3/3ds/wii ect for a fraction of that cost.

One word: Portable. That's the reason why they even make it :P

Of course they'd say this, rather than admit defeat. If it was Nintendo, they'd still say something to that effect, except with the 3DS.

Only time can tell whether this comment holds true.

I dislike the weird structure of that post...

This put together (by the article writer) make it sound like Ryan is saying: "No the 3DS is not a threat to Vita, since Vita has quality, immersiveness, rich experience etc. that exceeds the 3DS and other smartpnhones" (like the 3DS even was a smartphone).
So yay for Sony for making a classy statement, nay for the article writer to put it together like that.

Edit: Slow-ninja'd by ShadowSoldier (Opening tabs, then go to eat.. bad idea)

If they are two distinct markets one should have little impact on the other. Sony wants to have their cake and eat it too.
