Hey

So today I decided it was time to go out and buy my first Mobile Suit Model. The ones where you have to assemble it yourself from several tiny parts. I had a friend who use to build these alot but I don't see him much anymore :( I remember that there were a few Tempers here who know their stuff when it comes to this topic so I thought to come here :)

The specific model I bought was a Freedom Gundam: Z.A.F.T Mobile Suit ZGMF - X10A. It is Real Grade.

I saw in the store I went into that they had 3 what seemed to be classifications: HG,RG and MG. I'm guessing these are the model's build difficulty?

Also since I've never built these before, a couple extra questions: Do the parts just clip together or do I need a special model glue? Do I need to paint these?

Cheers :grog: Will post a pic if I can

EDIT: Pic:

[member=shlong] is really into gunpla, he should have some useful advice. All I can tell you is: be very very careful when removing the parts from the sprues. Use nail pliers (they look like tiny wire cutters) to cut the part off the sprue. Cut the rest of the sprue off with an X-acto knife or a boxcutter, and finally, if there's any blemish remaining, smooth it out with a very very fine file or sandpaper. I can't think of anything else. The instructions should be easy to follow, they're all pictures.

Some people paint and weather the model after assembly because the basic colors are pretty, well, basic. But I don't know anything about painting (other than to always thin your paints) so I can't help you there.

The slide-on decals tend to fall off, but there's a type of decal-setting solution that you can use to get it to stick better. It softens the decal and helps it adhere to curved surfaces. After the liquid dries, you can paint over the decal with clear paint to further secure it.

Pretty much what @[member='Veho'] said u.u
As long as you're careful not to cut your fingers off derping around, you'll be fine.
NEVERMIND got my grades derped. Still an awesome kit :wub:

Remember, the more expensive the more awesome :teach:

You should see the paint job on @[member='raulpica']'s Gundam. It's ubersexy.

Also:
HG=High Grade
RG=Real Grade
MG=Master Grade
And then there's the ubershiny Perfect Grade which are so 'gasmic.

Nice, I'm a gunpla lover myself. Just follow the instructions (even if in japanese they're pretty understandable) and you're set ;)

What I have experienced, they just snap together, but you may want an xacto knife to trim the pieces, since they won't all come out perfect. some will have excess plastic around where the mold comes together, and that can get in the way.

Then again, I only built one, and it was a Zaku-II

Pretty sweet! The grades don't necessarily represent difficulty, usually just size: HG = 1/144, MG = 1/100, PG = 1/60. I believe Real Grade is 1/144, but includes an internal skeleton that usually only comes with MG or higher. Obviously bigger suits are more detailed, but the newer HG lines are pretty decent as is.

I personally like grunt suits and some of the less popular models that don't get MG versions, so I only collect HG (plus they are cheaper!). A few favorites:

That one is definitely the best quality HG model in my opinion, and was also the most expensive I ever bought, hahaha. It's the Nu Gundam from Char's Counterattack (the one piloted by Amuro, the protagonist). There's also a hi-Nu Gundam model with a neat color scheme, but it has some pretty gaudy 'wings'.

I used to have all the Gundam Wing 1/144 models - think I sold them when I moved out of my parents house.

Still want the Perfect Grade Wing Zero Custom :P

Is there a PG Freedom or Justice? Must go to google....
