Hello. I have had my Wii hacked for a long time and applied lots of different firmware hacks... but at this point I don't know what to do to update? I haven't updated it since probably beginning of the year or earlier. Thanks!

lol, Wii's don't have custom firmware, ur thinking of the PS3

anyways, as others have already told u, check out ModMii

No I'm not, it's just the only way I know how to describe it. I know about how people mode individual parts of the firmware.

I've had mine modded all the way back since the twilight princess hack.

If I do modmii will I lose anything? Any functionality? What should I install as a preloader, like a safety net? what about a USB loader? a disc loader?

you should study up a bit before thinking about messing with your Wii.

and after you do that, modmii will take care of you just fine.

IOS is essentially firmware. That's how bushing describes it on HackMii.
I disagree on that, but I'm interested in seeing his reasoning. Do you have a link?

Don't have a link to any of the articles, but he doesn't really reason it, just mentions it in passing. And it makes perfect sense to me. Firmware = the software that provides low level access to a systems hardware. IOS = the software that provides low level access to the Wii's hardware. Therefore, IOS = firmware.

How else would you describe it?

I'd say an IOS is more of an Operating System, and boot0 is more like firmware, but it doesn't really matter. The System Menu isn't even close to being firmware. It just annoys me when people call the System Menu firmware.

@SifJar Btw, I do see why he calls it firmware (even though I disagree), thanks for explaining his reasoning.

boot0 is the bootloader, not the firmware.

EDIT: And System Menu is closer to Operating System than IOS in my opinion. Although really the Operating Sytem would incorporate SM + IOS. (e.g. Windows incorporates drivers/hardware firmware + the Windows interface).

Nothing runs under the System Menu. Everything runs under an IOS.

More on top of, rather than under, and I know that. Doesn't relate to what I said. Operating system incorporates both the low level code and the user interface, in my opinion. i.e. IOS and System Menu.

If you want to update, don't do so farther than 4.1U. Your modchip will no longer be able to play region free games. 4.1U has all the features of 4.2/4.3 without any of the drawbacks. Use ModMii to hack your Wii, an update to 4.1U will be included as part of the process.

who cares.. people know what I"m talking about.

Just because people know what you are talking about doesn't mean you are correct. Generally when I hear people referring to System Menu as firmware, I think of that person as a bit of an idiot.

So you have a custom system menu? Most people don't even know you could do that and considering how long it's been unless you followed Mauifrogs guide or read another forum post I think you simply have a System Menu with Preloader hacks available.

Honestly ModMii is your friend here and is possible the simplest way to go about updating your Wii. Just follow directions and do as the auto-generated guide tells you. Simplicity with ease of mind.

If you actually want a Custom System Menu grab WiiModv2.9 from the forums here and goto
System Menu
Choose System Menu and select Yes to both set version# and required IOS
Choose version# (65535=max and will never get overwritten)
Choose required IOS (can be any IOS really but I like IOS123 for now :)
Set version number to 65535.
It will begin installing System Menu X using IOSX and whenever you do an update (disc/wifi) your system menu will never be overwritten and all hacks will still be available.
Remember if you dont want to choose IOS123 System Menu
4.0-4.1=IOS60
4.2=IOS70
4.3=IOS80
