Judge gets 28 years in prison

A judge who illegally sentenced youth offenders to sentences in privately run facilities in return for money has been sentenced to 28 years in prison. I am glad. This was a most egregious breach of trust and exploitation of vulnerable citizens in violation of their constitutional rights. It led to one teen killing himself.

A former Pennsylvania juvenile judge was sentenced to 28 years in prison Thursday after being convicted for a scheme to make millions off unjustly incarcerating young people, court officials said.
Former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella was also ordered by a federal judge in Pennsylvania to pay about $1 million in restitution.
The sentence was four times the 87 months sentence that Ciavarella and federal prosecutors had agreed to when he pleaded guilty to charges in 2009.
But that plea deal was thrown out by a federal judge and the case went to trial.

Ciavarella was found guilty in February of 12 of 39 racketeering and fraud charges for accepting millions of dollars in bribes from friends who owned detention centers to which he sent juveniles.
The case made national headlines when Ciavarella was confronted by a distraught mother outside a courtroom after his conviction.
Sandy Fonzo's 17-year-old son, Edward Kenzakowski, spent six months in a detention center after Ciavarella sentenced him for possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to Fonzo, her son, who had no prior record, was never able to recover and eventually took his own life.
"He (Ciavarella) killed his spirit," Fonzo said at the time, "He crushed him, and he didn't help him." Fonzo said her son was full of resentment and pent-up anger after being sent to the detention center.
"He was just never the same," Fonzo said.
She said in February she came to the courthouse believing Ciavarella would be taken straight to jail. But when she found out he was going home and would not be sentenced until later, she was shocked and angered, and began shouting at Ciavarella.
Fonzo's confrontation was captured by television cameras.
"Do you remember me?" Fonzo screamed lunging toward Ciavarella, "Do you remember my son?" she screamed again. "He's gone," she cried, "He shot himself in the heart, you scumbag!"

Glad he's locked up. He'll probably die before his sentence is up, but it should've been much harsher.

Plus one to this. The USA really needs to do a review of it's entire Justice system, fix the Infrastructure, and pay attention to it's citizens. While it's at it, might as well try for getting it's priorities straight as well.

This is exactly the type of thing that is pushing me to find another form of government, as I cant support the current US one in any way anymore. It sickens me, it astounds me, it's useless IMHO right now.

Maybe communism or something, I dunno.

Either way, good to see this worthless scumbag of a judge getting her just deserts. It gives me one sliver of faith in the Justice System, but knowing my luck I'll read or hear something toomorow that will crush that into shards of nothingness.

A deserted island is too generous. People like that don't deserve to live. At some points, people shouldn't be considered humans anymore, but nothing but monsters that needs to be killed.

That man is nothing but a monster, wasting oxygen. He should obviously disposed of like an animal and thrown away like trash. He shouldn't be able to have any rights. He is nothing but an inferior animal who either need a bullet or an injection.

If you at least want to send people like that to prison, at least throw away the key and don't feed them and let them die of hunger. It would be very slow and painful, but who cares, they have no rights and can't be considered humans anymore, so who cares.

For exemple, why should a killer be allowed to live? The people he killed aren't allowed to live anymore because he killed them, so why should he have any rights to live? He should get the same treatment as the ones he killed, except a slow and very painful death.

Exactly, but our damn government and court system will not allow us to do any of this.

Ah, local news.

But he's going to appeal, definitely. So this definitely isn't over yet.

But since all this stuff has been going on around here for all this time, it's really just boring for me. Never got in trouble, never even met the guy like most kids did when they went on field trips to the court and such. Before any of these corruption dealings with most of the politicians in the area he was a good guy, strict, but it was for the good of the children. Funny on how these kind of things can change everyone's opinion on the guy, justly changed opnions of course.

Know people affected by this, not anyone affected too badly though. But I honestly think the uvenile courts should stay just as strict, nearly zero tolerance, but give the kids a lawyer for defense, one of the issues with this. Less Hugo Selenski's and what not, and there's still plenty of kids doing stupid shit that need to be locked up longer than they have been. Knew people like that too, went to juvie and what not just to get out and do more stupid stuff, and I'm afraid someone I know will get killed from someone stupid like that.

Final point, strict courts will keep kids in line. He shouldn't have been paid for each kid he sent away, but he still should have sent them away. Because the more they catch and send away, the more will stop before doing anything stupid. The police around here don't have their horse anymore, after all. I think so, at least. Hopefully the cameras will make up for it.

Oh boo hoo for the judge. He abused the damn law he was supposed to uphold, and when do massively harsh sentences on lesser crimes, result in less crime. That's Louisiana and Texas logic.

Well the problem was sending them to PA Child Care, story from someone who went there basiclly described it like a high security prison. Step out of line, and you got punished very badly. For kids that isn't right at all, but the other part for most kids sentences was Camp Adams. Less harsh, but still taught the kids something, and is something proper to hopefully straighten the kids out. PA Child Care was the part involved with the Kids for Cash scandal, by the way, Camp Adams was uninvovled for all I know, and the issue there is that kids can escape a lot more easily than a traditional prision like enviroment. Since it's a camp and all.

But I'm pretty sure that a harsher method works better, just make sure the kids always have a lawyer. Just don't treat kids like their murders or anything, they don't need high security in most cases if they need to be sent away. Just a camp whee they'll have to follow rules or facr a just punishment, and a lack of proper shoes to run away from that camp. But people will still run. Which is why they need to have a stricter option if the kid may try that. And by kid I mean anyone who still a juvenile, 16 year olds even.
