Hardware Is there any special thing about the 3DS?

You do realize the 3DS has Twin ARM11's and a PICO200 GPU compared to the DS' ARM7 and ARM9 and incredibly simple GPU (compared to 3DS at least) I can't believe you're trying to say that the 3DS only games will come to DS. NO, THEY WON'T! Get it through your thick head, the 3DS IS NOT A REVISION, it is THE EIGHTH GENERATION AND IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, AND BETTER than the DS. Pfft, pretty much all of the fucking brilliant games coming out on the 3DS couldn't hold up on the DS for shit. In fact, I can only think of a couple 3rd party games that could..
EDIT: Not to mention, the DS only has 4MB ram (DSi/XL has 16mb, not even a big difference) while the 3DS has 128mb.. Yeah good luck running Paper Mario 3D or Kid Icarus Uprising on your old DSi XL..

I never said the thing was just a revision, I sure have made it clear the thing is not entirely worth the effort. Glad to hear you are massively pumped for a few games though
Admittedly I only originally bought the Nintendo DSlite for Panzer Tactics, but I was also at the time, aware the flashcart scene made the entire Nintendo catalogue a wide open selection process.
You sure seem pumped up over the Twin ARM11's and a PICO200 GPU though. If you are such a tech geek as you imply, then I find your enthusiasm odd. Any self respecting tech geek would already realize the hand held gaming market is being left behind by tablets. All you get with a 3DS, is a powerful device, with a puny screen and an very small line up of games. Spend the cash, get the REAL thrill in 2011, buy a tablet and do more than play a few games in 3d on a puny screen.
After all, why limit yourself to a few puny screened 3d games, when you can have something with a 10 inch screen that is a full blown PC and can play the whole Nintendo libray (minus a few 3d games) and anything a PC can do.
Even if the flashcart mob were to make a cart that can run all of my pre 3DS games on a 3DS as well as run any of the 3DS games on a 3DS, it still remains on a puny screen.
Not sure we can rely on Nintendo to re release an XL like they did for the DSi though. You rarely see a more niche variant of a product appear when the main product sales are not through the roof.
I suspect, in 3 years time, the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP will have been eliminated in thrill value by tablets that can do anything they can do, merely a lot better for being on a much better device. Just because you can put a thing in a pocket, is not infinitely perfect. Look at the Wii, it's original fancy spiffy difference is now just a standard option. Nothing makes you special forever.
Nobody can be this dumb can they? Tablets are awful portable consoles for a few reasons. The first being size, the second being hardware and the third being piracy. Tablets are 7-10 inches in size, they're not really pocketable devices, not to mention, they're massive gimmicks though Windows 8 might change that. The hardware in a tablet and portable game console are completely different beasts; Resident Evil Revelations can't be replicated on current tablets because the hardware on tablets are way too slow. While the iPad and Android tablets obvious have higher clock speeds, the architecture is not optimized for gaming like the 3DS and Vita will be. Piracy on Android and iOS is laughably simple, you can find 5GB in apps and games on and private or public torrent site.Panzer Tacticer said:

Controls, people, controls. Anyone should be able to realise there's no way you can play any serious game on a tablet or a smartphone using the touchscreen. Hardware isn't everything, tablets may have better cpu than ARM11 and better GPU than PICO200, but bear in mind that 3DS is a proprietary device with a specific custom-made software that utilizes the hardware way more efficiently than the generic tablets with memory/power hogs (Android/iOS + drivers).

Lolwut? I'd like to think of myself as a tech geek, and Tablet PCs will NEVER replace handheld gaming. EVER. Tablets are absolutely terrible for any kind of gaming besides the simple racing ones. Touch screen controls are absolutely worthless, I've tried playing NES, SNES, PSX, and N64 emulators on an old tablet of mine and the touch screen had ruined the experience. I had to use a bluetooth keyboard to play them and I'm sure no self respecting person would ever carry a keyboard WITH their tablet, it completely ruins the experience. So what if it's a puny screen? Look at the Gameboy series, I've heard hundreds of people claim that laptops would overcome the portable handheld market hands down. But look where we're at now? Tablets may be good for short little mini games, which is basically the entire library of IOS/Android games, but not hard core gaming. And that example isn't necessarily the greatest, the Wii still is special in the sense that it did it first (well, sorta first).
To me, tablets are more of a gimmick and a "feel good" gadget. You can't really do something with it real well except surf. iPads are way overpriced too.
Any developer can tell you that a dedicated system(3DS) for gaming is gonna be loads better in performance vs a generic one (iPad).
Case in point: DS vs a 486 computer which both runs at 66 mhz. So while my 486 66mhz which has an FPU, can only manage ~30 FPS on a bullethell game I did a while back(even with loads of X86 ASM optimizations) the DS with its dedicated hardware can run the same engine at 60 FPS with 4x the number of bullets on screen without arm ASM. And it does this without and FPU to boot.
