Boot to Gecko project draws on some parts of Google's Android.

Gecko is the rendering engine that is used by the Firefox browser to display content from the web. Mozilla is looking to expand its capabilities to be at the core of a web-centred operating system that will be developed in the open with all code shared as soon as it is written.

The OS will draw on some parts of Google's Android operating system, but most of the code will be freshly written. If successful, it could become a competitor for Android itself, Apple's iOS, webOS, Chrome OS and Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system.

The Mozilla team said the project is only now in its infancy, but has made it public to attract interested experts in the Mozilla community and elsewhere, whom it encourages to join the effort. [/p]

They seem to be entering a slightly crowded market.

Yea but some of the developers on the mobile OS market are not doing so good right now, so they may pull out in the future.

Never can tell.

God No! Every other FF release is over bloated piece of shit! Plus we don't need millions of different androids based OSs running around. Once one popular company starts dev-ing different A-based OSs, many other companies will too. Mozilla should be shot for trying Android into the linux of phones. Just look at linux. It has soooooooooo many different takes on it, support is a mess and even getting java to run is a nightmare. Mozilla should stay with the work they do the best.

You would think that Gecko would eventually come out with a successor, this would be a great opportunity for that to happen.

Yes...Yes...YES!

This is exactly what the mobile OS world needs!

If this is successful, we will have a OS for mobile devices that is more open than any other one is in terms of being free from Patent Litigation, etc. Not that the big businesses will realize, but that's their own issue. Even if some parts are from Android, they likely will only be those that are GPL'd, meaning they'd be compliant anyway, and would not carry a risk of a lawsuit.

I cannot wait for this! I want to see what happens when the makers of the most successful Web Browser, meets an OS!

LONG LIVE MOZILLA!

Oh, and FF doesn't seem bloated to me. Course you should really try FF8 Beta (Aka Firefox Nightly/Minefield). It takes very little resources on my system, and is blinding fast.

to my knowledge, what makes an OS successful in all aspects is how device manufacturers apply it or whether they do or not
android is good correct but microsoft could have done the same or a linux alternation. Google "owns" the advertising mechanism and also how to promote their own goods. they were successful because of the popular devices having its OS.
This does not mean they dont deserve it but that it could also have been done by other but contracts are not easy to get.

You tell me, in a market of Firefox, IE, Opera and Chrome... the latest browser Chrome rises up the fastest while the many years old Opera or Safari doesnt. Is it only due to speed and size of Chrome or some other factor? Exposure?

Try opening Youtube.com or Speedtest.net and maybe that will be the answer
