It would be interesting with a non-weekly poll for a change here.

Personally I've tried quite a few layouts. A big problem with my native one is that it takes a lot longer to type the special characters /\|[]{}~ and and to a lesser extent also ;=@$ (in comparison to the default US keyboard layout).

Most (all except UK? Fill me in if you think otherwise.) other European layouts also suffer at least partly from this problem. For those who don't know, these characters are all extensively used in programming. As such, it's imperative for any programmer whose native layout makes typing these special characters slow to switch to a better suited alternative.

Personally I've opted for the international variant of the US keyboard layout. It allows me to program a lot faster while it still allows me to type åäö for when I'm typing in Swedish and ü for when I'm typing in German. Dvorak never interested me much as it seems extremely unviable for programming.

So has anyone actually ever given this any thought?

And anyone who uses Ubuntu knows what a keymap is, as it asks during installation.

Yet "how did i pratitioned?" is the most common question from people installing Ubuntu regardless of it being asked (and explained) during installation. Also, I've seen first hand two guys (well, one girl) on two separate occasions cancel the Ubuntu installation process when prompted to select a keymap.

Theory disproved.

I sometimes hate it when certain apps switch to US layout instead of UK, but I'm used to it by now. As for foreign layouts, so long as it's a QWERTY layout and not a QWERTZ layout (or other variants) it's all good.

EDIT: I might as well add, I'm a very fast typer (including typo corrections and adding grammar) as it's a necessary skill when writing/typing books that tend to be over 100k words. The more words you get down a minute, the less time it takes to get to the end of the book. The only time I ever look at the keyboard itself (since I usually have lots of research material to read through on other monitors/laptops whilst I'm typing) is when it's not a QWERTY keyboard (my brother has a Swiss QWERTZ keyboard, so I hate using that keyboard to type).

Dvorak is hipster garbage...
Increased typing efficiency and comfort are overrated anyways.

You ignorant fool.

"Dvorak = increased comfort"

You little shit, if you're so godamn lazy that you don't want to have to move your fingers an extra inch, just save yourself the trouble and buy a QWERTY mechanical. You'll use up "less energy".

I know what you're getting at, OP, but I type fast enough not to be annoyed by what you're saying.
And I never look at the keyboard not even for special characters.

the problem is when I switch keyboard layouts: it messes with my habits...
so I ALWAYS use the regular standard french keyboard layout.
Even on a mac I need the PC french keyboard layout.

PS: I don't think I'm the only one.

Standard UK QWERTY here.
I'm pretty quick with it; I have no particular need to try and learn DVORAK. QWERTY is the ubiquitous layout, and I can use it efficiently, so no need for me to change that.

Swedish qwerty here... and I have no trouble what so ever programming and using special characters at all.
And yes, I program on a daily basis.

I only have to move my right thumb a little bit to the right to hit Alt Gr, and then I'm good to go with the special characters
