I want to softmod my Wii, and I don't want to waste money on a hard drive if it's gonna be just to store wii games, so, I wanted to ask if I can use the internal hard drive of a pc for this purpose, instead of buying a hard drive myself.
I checked the list to see if the hard drive matched but it didn't, but still i wanted to ask if it was possible.
The hardrive is a Maxtor 3.5, and now the only thing left is buying a case to softmod, but like I said, I want to know if it's possible.

Thanks in advance

As long as the Wii works with that model of hard drive (it might even if it is not on the list), then all you need is an enclosure for it, or even just a cable that converts it to USB (both of which can be found online, or at a local electronics store)

But external hard drives really aren't much more expensive, If all you are putting on them is wii games, then you really don't need any more than 250 GB.

If you Format the external HDD to Fat32 or NTFS it can hold your wii games and PC Data. My HDD holds anime/movies and my wii games.

You'd have to remove your HDD from your pc, put it in a drive enclosure. Then when your done take it out and put it back into your pc. Probably be more work then it would be worth. Increasing likelyhood of damaging the drive and ending up with a useless HDD. You'd be better off buying a cheap external in my opinion. But yes it could be done

Actually, I only use about 50GB for all of my games (legally owned) so unless you pirate, you don't need a huge drive.

And yeah, an enclosure is all you need.

Like another poster said depends on how much, with a 500GB HD you could get around 150 titles (scrubbed) give or take.

In an ideal world, we would have a s(u)neek smbdi module that is able to load it's games over the network from your pc network.

The world isn't ideal, and it doesn't exist yet.

Removing your harddisk from your pc and installing it in an usb enclosure doesn't look very practical to me.
On the other hand, if you have an external harddisk, you can use it on your pc as well.

As a temporary solution, you could try my sneaky sd backup loader setup.

Be aware that it's not the most easy way to do things. (An usb loader with a compatible harddisk is a much easier method.

s(u)neek smbdi module

lol, I thought about something like this when I saw the recent changes to Riivolution.

It would be epic but imho a lot of devs would be scared to put their name to any effort involving something so promising yet hard to achieve. Before nand emulation was common place a lot of devs said it was impossible or too hard to produce and this was only when considering the disc based game saves. Now we can emulate an entire nand with almost all functions working as they should.

I wonder if anyone talented enough can make a poc smbdi before the wii becomes too old for anyone to notice something so cool.

250gig hdd will hold 100-125 games scrubbed either wbfs on wbf or wbfs on ntfs
500gig hdd will hold 200-250 games scrubbed
1tb hdd 500 games and so on

I have never hadd a hdd not work, but a newer hdd with atf (advance technology formating) wont work for triiforce (fat32)

My experience is that external ENCLOSURES are not very well supported by the Wii in general.

Assuming you have some kind of enclosure to put the hard drive you already have in, then it's worth testing. I don't think it's worth buying a new enclosure, since there's a high probability it won't work anyways.

External HARD DRIVES are generally well supported. If you're going to buy anything this is the way to go. Buy pretty much whatever you can afford, even on the worst case you're looking at 4GB per game. Though realistically you're looking at on average 2GB per game.

Recent? Riivolution has had network support nearly from the first day it was released in March last year.

s(u)neek smbdi module might be nearly impossible to do, but a setup with a server module running on your pc, and a tcpdi client on the wii should be a valid alternative that might be possible. Homebrew programs use the libogc network.c functions. Those functions are basically handeled by ios calls.
The reason why in my opinion smb is nearly impossible is because program and data space of the di module are limited.
The s(u)neek di routine already diverts the dvd access to the usb drive, so, diverting them to a network call and responding with the proper data shouldn't be that hard.
Maintaining a network connection from within the di seems to be the hardest part, and maybe other game network access will need to pass trough there as well. (can the /dev/net/ip/top be opened more than once?)
Even if nintendo brings out a new console, it will likely take a while to bring it's homebrew to the level wii homebrew is standing now, so I guess we are still safe for a couple of months.

Sorry for hijacking the original threat topic, but I think it has mostly been answered already.

It looks like a windows only device. I don't think it will work on the wii. If you look at it's price, it's an expensive solution.
I prefer using a piece of code some brillant programmer put together for fun.

Just to have some closure on this subject.
I bought a hard drive that works according to the list to avoid risk of the makeshift not working.
And of course it works and I've been enjoying gaming ever since xD.
Thanks for the advice guys.
