A friend of mine wanted to install a modchip in his Wii. Problem is, the modchip isn't compatible. The Wii has a LEF203xxxxxxx serial number (and he has the wrong modchip for that).
Now, I would normally recommend softmodding it and running everything from USB. However, since he doesn't want to put much effort in it and it's just for his kids I'm not sure this is the right thing to do since loading from USB invariably means fiddling with settings, updating the occasional IOS for better compatibility, etc.
Basically, my question is this: if I softmod a Wii with a channel to play backup discs, what is the difference to having a modchip for the user?
Will I have to worry about updating IOS fixes occasionally as if I were using a USB loader?
If so I think I'd best just look for a working modchip.
i'd go forward with a softmod... Softmod >>>> Hardmod. the only hardmod which would have value would be a WODE (which offers USB loading) and maybe a SUNDriver.... however, the cost of a hardmod is way more expensive than the small donation to XFlak for using Modmii
softmodding doesn't require much effort at all now that Modmii exists. ...and you can do so much more than just play wii games from discs. now that we're in the twilight years of the Wii's life cycle, i would doubt there's going to be any games released that will require yet-to-be developed cIOSes or cIOSes built on a non-standard (or non-existent) bases.... and with compatibility at where it is now, i don't think there's going to be any groundbreaking developments which will require updating a softmod (and if there is, they have you to keep tabs on that for them, right?)
