I've been thinking of buying one since an i7 core one (R2 iteration) is going for around only $1000. I know Alienware isn't really a popular name as is (given its overpriced boutique PCs), but I've been hearing a lot of good things regarding the m11x. I'm liking it as a netbook with supreme gaming and media capabilities, since in my line of work I can't really afford to be lugging around a big-ass laptop. Does anyone with one give me any feedback?

It's a pretty incredible amount of power jammed into that 11" frame. While Alienware computers are typically overpriced, the mx11 is actually in line with pricing for that form factor -- and, even better because of the graphics hardware.

Go for it!

If you do decide to buy it, you might want to wait on it for a little while as it seems the R3 is just around the corner : http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/08/manual-...ms-nvidia-gt54/

My problem if I wait for an R3 is it might be a bit overbudget already if I wait for it (the R2's market price is ~1300-ish), and also, I've been hearing that an R3 may not be that much faster/better than the R2. Though I have yet to do more reading up to confirm that. And also, I don't know exactly when i will be arriving, since it's been months of speculation and no official word thus far...

Well, the R3 is probably just going to be Sandy Bridge ULV processor w/ Optimus GT 540M (reminds me of that similar 540M Sager/Clevo model). They're great form factor machines for the 11'' market as Sypha says

The M11x has received overly positive reviews that I've read (including CustomPC Magazine, which is my source of trusted information). R3 will probably continue that tradition, although all the rumours talk about how they're worrying how much it'll cost for 3G/4G radios as an optional extra.

I'm sure some people (myself included) could find it in themselves to regret spending so much money on a laptop with nothing more than a desire to play games on an 11" screen. Certainly I would prefer to have a nice big 17" screen to play games on.

I think the OP wants to use it for HD media on the go, primarily. And regular netbooks can't cut it in term of power.

I have one, and it's a beast. The only problem, I bought the one with a wimpy Core 2 Duo overclocked to 1.83 GHz.

The extra $400 is so worth it.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll be buying one shortly, probably an R2 because it might be too much for my pocket if I go R3.

@Originality: As pyrmon24 said, I am buying it for HD media and games on the go. I've got a good desktop for games on a big screen already, I want to bring them on the go. It looks like it's right on the money for my needs.

Thanks everyone!

Sucks man. I was hoping the m18x was going to appear today, there was a slight chance from rumors. But it looks like the m14x and the new m11x appeared today. All I know is that the m18x is due soon.

If I wasn't shopping for a sli type config I might of got the m11x, but I'm looking for a dual vid card and the m17xr3 took that out. I was mad. But it has 120Hz screen

but still not good enough for me. And now I hear the m18x might not have the 3d capable 120Hz screen. I will be mad yet again if it doesn't.

EDIT: and TC try this page http://www.dell.com/us/p/laptops#facets=55...5930679&p=1 it lists some m11x options but they don't say what r# but they have i5 and i7 and I think a core 2 yuck.

Actually, the starting cost is $999. Well, that is if you want to get an M11x r3 with an i5.

I think the M11x is a novelty. The last person I knew who purchased one was initially very happy and excited. I told them that would all change once they traveled to their destination and were stuck with an underpowered GPU and a small screen. This person has already sold their M11x and that was after around 2 months of ownership. The weight of the M11x is not too far from a 15'' apparently.

The cost is also not too far from a 15'' that would net you a GPU twice the power. Of course, everyone will talk about portability and ''on the go'' but really, what exactly does all of that mean.

Well, it means more battery life for one. Very, very few Optimums laptops exist right now that have GPU's in the range of the M11x.

Alienware is a terrible company to buy from, and I would attempt to talk any person out of it.

The term "customer support" is an oxymoron when Alienware is involved: they don't support their customers. Once they have your money, they couldn't give fuck all about what happens to you or your system. Their reps are all terrible to deal with. I know that seems an odd statement because it typically varies from call to call, but in all my time under their 'support' I never once spoke to a decent person. And there are countless horror stories out there to confirm it--if you bother to research it which sadly I did not.

Honestly, purchasing a laptop from them is singularly the worst thing I have ever bought. I don't even have to think--it is right there on the front of my mind. The honeymoon was oh-so-sweet when it finally arrived in that big black box. But it was short lived as it began to break down in nearly every conceivable way over just the first year.

Just one experience that best exemplifies how things went: my laptop's GPU began overheating roughly less than one week short of the warranty expiration. Literally a few more days and I would have been completely out of luck. It took much of that time to get it diagnosed/troubleshooted and confirm with them that it was certainly a hardware issue, and I ended up having to argue once the warranty did expire that because it was a preexisting issue that they should still cover it. Finally they conceded this and agreed to replace it.

Their RMA process was to take our credit card information, then have me send in the defective card, then they would send the replacement. Instead, we ended up getting billed for it...twice. A brand new GPU from Alienware at that point was about $400. We came this close to a mortgage check bouncing, as well as missing other payments because of this, and accruing shitloads of overdraft fees. We had to fight with Alienware 'support' to get them to renege the charges. Probably hours were spent in total from being on hold. It was absolutely nerve racking to say the least.

Or the fact that when I bought the laptop, they stuck me with an already obsolete motherboard version that didn't support video card upgrades. I paid $2500 for that laptop (in 2005) and it didn't support any upgrade to the most essential component of a gaming system. Apparently, they only realized somewhere later on that "oh, there might be a difference in power requirements" and to do so required a brand new power supply _and_ motherboard. At the customer's own expense--of course. They completely shifted the burden onto everybody else.

I could go on and on about things like the scorch marks on the case from where my hand rests when using it. Or the time I the hinge up and broke, and a replacement that would have cost $70 was given to me free by a kind internet stranger completely unaffiliated with Alienware. Or the fact that the battery stopped holding a charge within that first year. Or the fact that apparently super expensive "boutique" computers don't seem to qualify us for any better driver/software support than some ASUS laptop from Walmart (they never bothered to produce anything once Vista came out).

Just heed my warning: do whatever you want, but if you buy from Alienware it may end up being literally the worst decision you've ever made in purchasing a computer.
