So the dev to Garry's Mod made an update that did a basic DRM check. Check the steamID with all known people who have purchased the product. If the check fails pop up an 'error message'. As shown its not rocket science, and easily circumventable. The net was that users posting to the official forums with this error message were banned FROM THE FORUMS (this has erronously been translated to banned from the game which is incorrect).
Subsequently a lot of anti-DRM vitriol has emerged. One tweet inparticular seems to parrot a lot of the tired old 'excuses' for piracy.
1) I want to try before I buy. Fair enough! But this is up to the person providing the service. Game might have a demo, or might not. If you want to 'try before you buy' then go for the demo. If there is no demo, then appropriately punish the dev by not purchasing the game. This does NOT give you the excuse to steal it.
2) Some people are poor. Ok. But under what OTHER circumstance is 'I am poor' an excuse for stealing stuff? You can't do this at the 7-11, a restaurant, a car dealership, computer store. NO WHERE ELSE can you say "I am poor" and get a free ticket for stealing. If you can't afford it, you can't buy it. This rings equally hollow with Gary's Mod which is $9.99. Dirt cheap by most gaming standards.
Pirates should just stand up and say what they really feel. They don't care that they are stealing. They don't care about the people creating the content they are stealing. They are selfish. They are cheap. They don't care. Don't make excuses for you behavior.
