So the dev to Garry's Mod made an update that did a basic DRM check. Check the steamID with all known people who have purchased the product. If the check fails pop up an 'error message'. As shown its not rocket science, and easily circumventable. The net was that users posting to the official forums with this error message were banned FROM THE FORUMS (this has erronously been translated to banned from the game which is incorrect).

Subsequently a lot of anti-DRM vitriol has emerged. One tweet inparticular seems to parrot a lot of the tired old 'excuses' for piracy.

1) I want to try before I buy. Fair enough! But this is up to the person providing the service. Game might have a demo, or might not. If you want to 'try before you buy' then go for the demo. If there is no demo, then appropriately punish the dev by not purchasing the game. This does NOT give you the excuse to steal it.

2) Some people are poor. Ok. But under what OTHER circumstance is 'I am poor' an excuse for stealing stuff? You can't do this at the 7-11, a restaurant, a car dealership, computer store. NO WHERE ELSE can you say "I am poor" and get a free ticket for stealing. If you can't afford it, you can't buy it. This rings equally hollow with Gary's Mod which is $9.99. Dirt cheap by most gaming standards.

Pirates should just stand up and say what they really feel. They don't care that they are stealing. They don't care about the people creating the content they are stealing. They are selfish. They are cheap. They don't care. Don't make excuses for you behavior.

copyright infringement is not the same as stealing. stealing (theft) means something physical is being lost, while copyright infringement is copying something. just saying. *awaits flames*

Considering Valve games are frequently on sale during holidays and, even then, it's not that expensive (you can get it for $15 with HL2: Deathmatch and Garry's Mod), there's not really a reason to pirate it.

My friend put over 2,000 hours in the game because he loves it so much.

^^ correct, Copyright infringement is in no way stealing, but it still doesn't make it just.

I'm glad that devs are getting creative with their battle against piracy instead of implementing obtuse DRM schemes that end up hurting the consumer, and doing little to nothing to thwart the pirates in the first place.

I saw this on Garry's Twitter and loved it. Doesn't hurt anybody who has bought the game like most horrid DRM does. The Ubisoft DRM only hurt legit consumers, pirates didn't have to deal with it.
Also since it was disguised as an error it was funny to watch the confused folk.

If you want to try before you buy see if you can get Gmod9 running. Not as featured as the retail release but enough to see if you like it or not.

I agree, I got Unreal Tournament 3 for $10 when it was worth $50. Seriously, pirating from some companies is one thing, but pirating from valve is just lame, they have some of the best deals in the world every other day (a slight exaggeration).

I seriously see no reason to pirate Garry's Mod, it's my favorite Valve game/mod. That and it's cheap.

Every Valve game I have on my computer I payed for (which is saying something)
I had L4D for a bit which I didn't pay for, but ehh, it's no fun unless you have friends to play it with, and nobody I know plays PC games like I do.
It's true that Valve games are cheap
(Purchased the Orange box for 7.50, CS:S for 5, HL1 pack for like 10, aaaand Portal 2 for 45)
Though it's cheap and all, I mean, I've hardly got a problem with piracy.
What I do like is funny AP measures devs take.

I pirate because I was sick of being treated like a criminal by certain game companies.

Also, Piracy =/= Stealing.

What the RIAA and MPAA say is bullshit. If I never had an intention on buying it, they're not losing a sale.

I remember pirating Garry's Mod.
I bought it a few months ago

This also goes for Team Fortress 2, Killing Floor, Super Meat Boy, and probably more as games I've pirated at one point or another and purchased eventually.
Would I have purchased these games without trying them first? Probably not.

Is also why Steam needs more free weekends

For most games I would agree with you, but everyone knows what Garrys Mod is, everyone has seen the videos and what you can do with it. It's not too much of a stretch to say that a demo isn't needed.

Well that's not a very valid argument. Fact is that if piracy were not an available option, you may very well may have bought that game. For example, say I pirated Super Mario Galaxy 2 and I haven't bought a legit copy of it. If I couldn't pirate it then yeah, I'd probably buy it. However, since piracy is cheaper and I'm a cheap bastard, I'm now not gonna buy the game.

But let's not turn this into a big piracy debate thread, that's just my thought.

Well, game x looks awesome when guy y is playing, I'm buying it!
The game looked much more awesome when guy y was playing it, but it sucks!

Yeah right. You don't know if a game is fun by seeing some guy playing it, you know if it's fun by playing it.

Sorry Piracy is stealing

The game/music/movie company is selling an experience. You enjoyed that experience without paying for it. Just because it's not a physical product does not mean you arent stealing it.

Considering it's not really a "game", your point is moot.

According to US law, it's not. Theft is a criminal matter, copyright infringement is civil matter. Try again, please.

What's so great about Garry's Mod other than it being a sandbox and that it can use many of the great mods from Garrysmod.org is the great game modes. People have been using the Source Engine for years just to play RP servers. I remember RPing in Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, Counter-Strike: Source, and even RPing in other games such as Half-Life The Specialist. No game/mod has ever nailed RP on the Source Engine like Garry's Mod did. The game modes can be so deep with coding that it feels like a different game. You can buy a house, buy a car, get a job, arrest people, and even grow weed. And that's just one server, the game varies from server to server. They also have Prop Hunt game mode where you disguise as a prop while human players look for you. And Death Run must also be mentioned, where you run a dangerous obstacle as players sit in a room full of buttons and triggers that activate the death traps. In my eyes Garry's Mod is a full game. As said, there is also Sandbox mode.

Because it's not a game.
It's a modification that uses Half Life 2's files, hence the name: Garry's Mod.

Wasn't Garry's Mod free?
