If the flash cart you have does not come with the update already applied, then you will need to update it on a DSi/Xl, or perhaps a DS/Lite (if it doesn't even have the DSi/XL update). There's two exceptions.

1 - Some flash carts some with their own flasher, such as the Cyclo iEvolution. Then you can flash it from your PC.

2 - Some flash carts like the R4i Gold claim compatibility with the 3DS, but it's a new cart you have to buy, they don't let you update.

Well I'd like to help... I have experience in related work, but never on a piece of nintendo hardware. If someone could just point me in the right direction...

I can confirm now that on my U.S. model 3DS, I have my M3i Zero working with DS roms (**not** 3DS roms) using R3 DS Real firmware on the card.

so as i aint got a ds or dsi console to update flashcard . my best bet is to buy a Cyclo iEvolution flashcart yes. or are there any other flashcards i can use without the use of a ds/dsi

Sooo. I have an Acekard2i flash card, it had somekind of firmware which allowed me to play games on my DSi. Now I don't have and DSi, but I want to buy 3DS, and I'm wondering, will I be able to play DS games on 3DS without needing help from ds/dsl/dsi?

As for updating your old Acekard, you would have to use a DS Phat/Lite/i/XL to update. You won't be able to update on the 3DS. Also, Acekards with a HWID of 44 can't update as of now. The HWID can be found by running the AKAIO firmware, and going to START > HELP from within the GUI menu.

Alright. I understood, thanks for the quick reply. And how to check if it is the new Acekard which I will be able to run out of box?

If it runs on the 3DS, then it's one of the new flashcarts.

You'll have to contact the vendor you're purchasing from to check whether it is a new Acekard or not.
