Hello, well I am finally going to be buying a Wii and was wondering if it much better to get a new one or save a few bucks on a used one? Ordering from Amazon and wanted a black one but the best deal used one won't be in stock till 1 week from now for some reason yet the new one is in stock and the used white one is in stock. Kind of confuses me how they know some used black ones will be there in a weeks time.

If you buy the used one you have a change that the boot1 bug is present, which isn't in new wii's. Also you have the change that you have a good wii drive which can play burned dvd's withh just a softmod.

i bought a wii a few weeks ago and i got lucky i had all

Having a vulnerable boot2 is a bonus, but the drive isn't that much of an issue seeing as most people (with more switching over) use USB loading

you're right, but if you have it, you can also watch dvd's. But if you buy a used black one you are sure you doen't have both.
so i would recommend a used wii, especially if you want to softmod it.

Drive can be important if you plan on playing GC games. Although if you have the money you can buy WODE and load GC from USB.

wow most that sounds like another language to me..haha Thanks will have to check up on some those things you guys talking about after work. Don't really care about playing DVDs and from what it sounded like the newer drive doesn't play GC game? Or maybe just reading wrong. Figured I could load homebrew and backups off SD cards or is USB better?

I'm not sure how exactly Nintendo's warranty is with softmodding NOW, but I've always loved their customer service and had never had problems. If there is no way to make your Wii 'clean' again after softmodding, then just go with a used one. If there is, new, IMO.

I had that SSBB problem in 2009 or so where the drive wouldn't load the dual layered discs properly, sent it in, got fixed, all was good.

Haven't sent it in since so I'm out of warranty now, but basically if I had bought that used and was out of warranty I'd have been fucked since it was before USB Loaders were pretty good, and disc loading was the big deal.

If you end up with something that messes up one of your USB ports or your disc drive or something, sending it could be a LOT easier than attempting to fix it yourself. Just something to consider.

nintendo will fix the ssbb disk error out of waranty. @kusiga the newer wii drives can't read gamecube "backup" disks. originals are fine though. Same goes for wii games. I would try and get a used one that has the vulurable boot 1, the extra brick protection is nice.

But the newer wii drives can use the usb to play "backup" copies right? Or maybe I am reading this wrong, well may just play using the normal disk if all doesn't work out. Doing the usb way can you still end up bricking the wii?

In performance, they're roughly the same. But USB drives can hold more stuff.

For the rest: I can't add anything that hasn't already been said.

It can play Retail GC games perfectly ...just no burned DVD backups for newer drives.

Used all the way, cheaper, plain and simple.
Screw the warranty, just get one that looks in ok nick. When you get it, check the playlogs, chances are, if it wasn't hacked, it wasn't used all that much anyway. That seems to be the way, back when I was modding and repairing this was always the way, people who had their wii hacked, it was played loads, no hack, hardly touched.
I recently bought a new wii as had sold my old one a year or so ago. When I did, I went for a black used one. Picked it up for £80 fully boxed with all the standard kit. Obviously as its black the drive won't read backups and the boot1 bug isn't present. BUT, all in all, that wii cost me sweet FA.

Cost of Wii - £80
Games that came with it that I sold on ebay (who needs games, we're hacking and getting a usb drive) - £40
500Gb hard drive brand new £40.

Total cost of black wii with 500gb hard drive £80. If you really wanted backup/dvd loading too, then add £20-£30 for buying the drive.
So around £100 total cost including hard drive and dvd drive that reads compared with brand new £150+ and then you still need a hard drive and drive that can read backups.

Alternatively go older for a chance of having boot1 bug + drive without messing around. However the downside to this and why I stayed away from it. With a white wii, it could have came from any time within the last 4-5 years. Black wiis only came out last year so by default, they will likely be played less and be in better overall condition. I know mine for example, it had been played a handful of times and looked brand new.

A boot2 bootmii wii is indestructible. The only two things that break on wii are the optical drive and bluetooth module. The optical drive is gonna last 20 years if you use a USB Hard drive and bluetooth module can be replaced for 10$.

If you're thinking of new because you like black or red, you can always buy yourself a case and create yourself a little project. The end result is quite rewarding

As far i can see it, old vs new is like this:

old:
+Tiny chance you can install BootMii boot2 as brick protection on it. Only very old white models. Not required at all for anything and brick protection can be gained with priiloader + BRAIN too.
+Chance that it reads DVD-Rs. Only white models.
-Chance that the drive can't read DVD-DL properly, doesn't matter if retail or backup. Only white models.
-Chance that your drive is worn out and will fail much soon than a new one would do
-Chance that the previous owner was stupid and had WiiBrick24 on -> CPU and/or GPU overheated, either it's damaged already(bad pixels or similar) or it will die "sooner". If you never had WiiBrick24 on, i'd say the chance that your wii ever overheats or dies from overheating is next to 0, but i won't estimate anything if there was some damage already done.

new:
+fancy new colors!

The rest is the same, everyting you can do on a new Wii is also possible on an old Wii, but not vice versa. If you don't plan on actually using discs, i'd say it doesn't really matter at all if it's new or old

No no. A older wii might suffer from Video Chipset overheating.

The earliest models (2006+-) which can be installed bootmii at boot2, all of them have this issue, or it´ll be likely to happen. Because I had 2-3 of them, and hell I was happy with it, but suddenly it became "weird to see", and then minor visual glitches happened. Small artifacts.

Even if you still have one of those (or the one you want), their motherboard chipset design, tend to overheat.

So I, for now, learning my lesson, decided to have a newer one, but to be more careful on installing/editing stuff inside NAND.

I have one from christmas 2006 and still running without issues. Are you sure you treated it nicely? It only comsumes about 20 Watt at full power and has fan, so i'd say it does not tend to overheat at all. Especially if you comare it to 100+ Watt monsters like XBox360 and ps3.

Believe me, i´ve own 3 of them. (Boot 2 bug enabled)

Same issues. Also, older wiis will require some sort of extra cooling. The first symptom is artifacts at blurry, highly foggy games, like Residen Evil, or Smash Bros Brawl. Or N64 VC (ie, FZERO, Zelda Majora´s Mask)

You can notice these artifacts by using component cables (5 color plugs) then simply watching at Wii System menu´s animations. (shadow background effects, etc)

And, if you own a older wii, please turn off Wiiconnect24, it will kill your chipset so fast, you won´t notice

Any Wii, be it old or new, may have issue with WiiConnect24 as fan will not spin on standby. Therefore if you plan to use WiiConnect24 on standby then buy a USB fan. Nintendo never acknowledged this defect and I've seen people with later model suffered the same problem.

I have a launched model Wii, I put it in flat position and in well ventilated area. Never overheat besides WiiConnect24 being on. Still works like a charm (blutooth module is still working).

And are you sure about artifact with components cable? Other than fried GPU, it is possible those artifacts are in fact noise.
