I remember playing Harvest moon on SNES and the game boy color versions (1,2 and 3) and I loved it. So I was thinking of getting a harvest moon for the DS but to my surprise there were like a ton of different Harvest Moons! (like 10)... So what one should I get because I plan on getting one and spend a LOT of time on it. Are there any real differences between all of them or are they essentially rehashes of the same thing being put out for more money so I should just get the newest one.

so the list is:
Harvest Moon DS
Harvest Moon DS Cute
Harvest Moon DS: Island of Happiness
Harvest Moon DS: Sunshine Islands
Harvest Moon: Frantic Farming
Harvest Moon: Grand Bazaar
Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon
Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon
Rune Factory 3: A Fantasy Harvest Moon

So what one did you enjoy the most, spend the most time on, got the best memories of and what one would you recommend over all the others?

Cheers!

My 2 cents. As far as straight harvest moon games I prefer Harvest Moon DS, I got it when it first came out and still play it occasionally, the same can't be said for sunshine island. However Grand Bazaar was different enough that I was able to enjoy it, since some of the concepts were different. Though if you want the feel of the first game honestly HM:DS is the way to go.

Rune Factory is harvest moon concept with combat and a bit more of a story thrown in. So if that sounds like an bloody awesome time to you then grab Rune Factory 3. The first two are not required though there will be some references to them.

If you want my opinion on which one to get I'd go Rune Factory 3, then Harvest Moon DS.

Harvest Moon DS and Harvest Moon DS Cute is almost the same thing, the only difference is you play as a girl in Cute. I wouldn't advice to to play either of the two because of the infinite number of glitches in the game. Save game crashes are also prone in the two versions.

Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness is a stylus-controled Harvest Moon game, if you don't want that, try the Sunshine Islands, it uses the D-pad for controls and it's almost the same as Island of Happiness. Frantic farming isn't the typical Harvest Moon games, it is focused more on mini-games.

Grand Bazaar is the new revised Harvest Moon game. There's no mining. And it's quite easy to beat and it get's boring after awhile.

If you want the traditional harvest moon with a mix of fighting monsters, then go for the Rune Factory series.

You can read a lot more on Fogu.

I enjoyed Harvest Moon DS the most, with Rune Factory and Rune Factory III coming in second and third place respectively.

Personally, I prefer Harvest Moon: Utah edition. The Harvest Goddess is replaced by the Mormon god and you can marry all the girls in town.

Heheh, sorry, couldn't resist. Anyway....

I'm more of a traditional HM guy, so I would go for Sunshine Islands, which is essentially an improved remake of Islands of Happiness. Grand Bazaar kind of took the series a step backward for exactly the reasons previously mentioned.

Sunshine Islands and Grand Bazaar were both fun.

Sunshine Islands: A lot of traditional elements of Harvest Moon, but you have to really work to get a lot of things. You have to earn sun stones to raise islands, and some things that you need specific islands to do are: mining, getting married, growing rice, growing fruit trees, having a greenhouse, harvesting mushrooms, and some other things. And collecting sun stones is no easy task. For the most part Sunshine Islands is exactly like Island of Happiness, but the shitty touch controls aren't mandatory.

Grand Bazaar: A lot of traditional elements, minus two: There are no mines, and there is no shipping. You make money by selling stuff at a bazaar, which is held every weekend.
