Will confirm that on the new release certain games (for me, Dragon Quest IX) have odd loading issues.
I say 'odd' because when I first put 1.8.5(a) on, DQ IX loaded fine - once. After that initial load it would get to the yellow "Loading" screen and sit there forever.

I'm having this exact same problem as well. Dragon Quest IX gets stuck at the yellow "Loading" screen. Same with Infinite Space. All others I've tried work very well. I'm using 1.85a as I have a Kingston card.

You said your fixed your issue, something about the way you formatted your card, can you give specifics? I formatted mine in FAT32 in gparted (I run Linux). Kingston class 4 4gb microSDHC.

The common tool used to format SD cards is the Panasonic SD Formatter. You can find it with a google search relatively easily. It formats the SD card in a particular way that makes it less prone to failure. I think it's a Windows only tool so you'll have to either find a Windows box to run it on or sully your Linux box with Windows. I don't recommend you do it in Wine as that can lead to even more pain.

I wouldn't say it makes it less prone to failure (I think that's more the card itself), but it does format it to the guidelines set by the SD Association, which older versions of windows (particularly older than XP and possibly XP) most likely do not do.
Windows Vista and 7 should format MicroSDs fine (I have done it myself without issue), though I would still recommend using the SD Formatter simply because it is made/approved by the people who made/approved the SD standards.

What is the proper way to update from a previous AKAIO install and keep your old settings? When I copied 1.8.5 (_aio and akmenu4.nds) to my SD card, I kept the old globalsettings.ini file. Now whenever I boot to the card it either boots to AKAIO then the DSi powers off or I get an error saying "akmenu4.nds not found". Going back to my backup of 1.7.1 gets the card working again. Do I just have to throw out the old globalsettings.ini and loss all my previous settings?

Copy your globalsettings.ini file and all custom theme folders and all games/saves/whatever. Then format your card, put AKAIO 1.8.5 on, copy 1.8.5a on top of that and then put back globalsettings.ini, theme folders and everything else.

Do I have to use 1.8.5a? According to the AKAIO forums you should use 1.8.5a if you are having SD card issues with 1.8.5. Not sure what is causing this.FileTrip only have 1.8.5 so I assumed that was the right one to use.

Either way, I can't do it tonight so I'll have to try it out tomorrow afternoon.

You can use 1.8.5 by itself if you want, but I don't see any harm in using 1.8.5+1.8.5a.
1.8.5a is for those who are having SD issues, I don't think it's just for issues with 1.8.5 because some cards didn't work with AKAIO before.

Ya formatting the card didn't fix anything. Still freezes. Reformatted it with Full format (Flash erase ON) and Format Size Adjustment and it still freezes.

If I don't copy over globalsettings.ini it seems to work fine. What am I losing if I don't copy that over?

Did you put 1.8.5 and 1.8.5a in? I had the same problem and it fixed me right up.

I formatted the card, copied 1.8.5, then akmenu4.nds and the new loaders from 1.8.5a. Still freezes.

If i just copy over 1.8.5, I get "akmenu.4ds not found".

Edit: If I don't copy the old globalsettings.ini file, it seems to work. What am I losing if I don't copy that over?

I did. All the 1.8.5a zip I downloaded from AKAIO forum had was akmenu4.nds and the loaders. Copied them over and it loads then shuts the DSL/i down.

Well their motto is, "Noobs not welcome" and while you may not be a noob, they could right this off as a noobish question. Best to do more searching.

:sighs: Gota love elitists. :reads: WTF? There isn't even a discussion forum? : sighs: 9 out of 10 I could get my question answered easily if they did.

Anyway, I have to "debug" to see if I can reproduce it. I have multiple times (minus using a different SD card) so I could submit a bug report. Problem is that deleting globalsettings.ini and creating a new one seems to solve the problem. Must be some random thing in the file that's not jiving with the new release. I'm going to compare the old globalsettings.ini to the new one created by 1.8.5. Only way I'll figure this out.

Edit: Well I figured it out. Somehow there were two sets of shortcut variables/flags (ShortcutPath, ShortcutStr, and ShortcutLongPath). The first set had blank fields while the second pointed to a ROM. Removing one or both sets fixed the problem. I guess 1.7.1 ignored the empty variables. Have no idea how the hell that happened other then some random glitch from a previous AKAIO install. I've never opened the globalsetting.ini file before this, so I know I didn't add them. Its working now and that's all i really care about ATM.

1.7.1 is quite old, especially considering the engine changes that have been made since then. That's why we recommend if you're having issues to wipe the _aio directory, or formatting the SD card if you have issues. Sometimes older skins can occasionally cause issues which can cause AKAIO to fail in some weird way. Changes to the globalsettings.ini are well documented in the AKAIO wiki so there's a reference point if you need it. Most settings can be set in the GUI, though a few are manual additions.

  • 1.7.1 was the last stable update before the whole 1.8.* fiasco. I didn't upgrade to the 1.8.* series until now because of the problems people had.
  • I formatted my flash cart and was told by people in this very thread that it was ok to copy my old globalsettigns.ini over. I didn't even have to format the card seeing as it was the settings file that was causing the problems.
  • To my knowlesdge, skins do not have access to globalsettings.ini, so a skin could not have "Added" those extra lines.
  • Engine changes would not have affected the globalsettings.ini or more people would have had problems moving to 1.8.5. You wouldn't be able to "update".
  • The globalsettings.ini files didn't change very much between 1.7.1 and 1.8.5. I compared the two files after fixing the issue and were almost identical (minus a few variable/flag values, maybe one variable/flag, and the bad variables/flags).
Did you read any of my posts? I did everything I was supposed to do except throw out my old globalsettings.ini when the problem occurred. After that I started looking at the globalsettings.ini file as that seemed to be the cause of the problems, and I was right.

I still think it maybe have been a random glitch when I upgraded to 1.8.5 that added those duplicate variables (the file I used as a base of my comparison was the one I got off my flash cart when it failed to boot).

I`ve got a little problem with 1.8.5a. On DSi XL i can`t change brighness level. Tried it with L and with menu settings - it stays on the level you choosed in DSi Settings. Don`t even work if you using brightness cheat.
Tried on DSL - works with no problem. Tried my iPlayer on DSi XL - it can change brightness with no problem.

DSi / DSi XL has its own built in Brightness changer. Select + vol up/down. No need to worry about what the flash card offers
