So, after much delay, I finally softmodded my wii. I used a guide that was a little out of date, it had cios38rev14, HBC 1.0.6, Priiloader 0.4, and a bad wad installer, but it had them all there and handy, so I used those files. Well, got around the bad wad installer, and started installing some apps. I looked online for a USB loader that worked with "ordinary" harddrives (not WBFS) and found CFG USB Loader. Fat32 and NTFS? Heck yes. So downloaded CFG USB Loader 62.1 from their website, and fired it up. Didn't work. I could load the program, but when it tried to mount the device it timed out.

So, here's what I went through to fix it.

I read it had to be plugged into a specific USB port. Alright. Plugged it into USB 0. No change.

I read you needed to have a specific configuration to read NTFS drives. Alright. Set "NTFS = 1" and... nothing.

My installation (off the CFG site) was very barebones, alot of the files I saw mentioned weren't in it. So I downgraded from 62.1 to a complete version of CFG Loader 61 that I found. No change. Though I did get some better skins.

I read that it didn't work with Cios38rev14, they suggested I use Hermes 222/223 v4 instead. So I go and install that to my wii. Set CFG to load with hermes and... blackscreen.

So then I just installed CIOS38rev19. I read that rev20 was out there, but couldn't find it, and 19 was above the (18 or higher) requirement anyway. Reset all the settings in CFG, set NTFS = 1, and... still nothing.

I went and installed the latest HBC, 1.0.8. I read it had better hardware support for apps. Worth a try. No change.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong! The harddrive is an ordinary 80gig Wester Digital Caviar, formatted in NTFS, and inside a USB enclosure. Can anyone tell me how to get this set up?

Over at the Rev21 page I read a bunch of problems with USB support in Rev21. Horror stories with lag and crashes... makes me kinda wary to update.

Oh, and I forgot to mention in the post prior, the wii is running 4.2. Custom of course.

Well, might as well try both. I'll try the Hermes one first, then try rev21. I'll have to install this offline, so what ISO versions are needed for Hermes 5.1 from the NUSD downloader?

(has the IOS files from Hermes 4 still, that might be all I need) (I know which IOS files I need from NUSD for rev21 thanks to the rev21 thread)

And no wonder it crashed with 222, I needed a different DOL!

Also keep in mind that you can't rip wii games from the disc to an NTFS drive with cfg usb loader and if I'm not mistaken I don't think you can rip to NTFS with any usb loader at the moment. Just format the drive to fat32 and you'll be able to use it with the wii and your pc.

Wrong, NTFS is fully stable with cfg-loader, you can rip to it and play from it without problems!

No change with the hermes 5.1 (base 38 for 202, base38 for 222, base37 for 223, base57 for 224) and cfg loader 63a2-222.

Once again, times out during mounting. I am getting worried that maybe my HDD isn't compatible

Sounds like it's not compatible... Have you tried the cIOS249? This is the next step, and it's safe when you are using the configurable usb loader version I posted.

I'm doing it now, downloading IOSs for cIOS249rev21 still.

Is there a way to be SURE a HDD is or isn't compatible? If cIOS249rev21 doesn't work, would formatting a piece of the drive in WBFS be the way to be absolutely sure if it does or doesn't work?

This would be the same. The problem is that the drive can't be mounted, this has nothing to do with the parition.

Why not start from scratch using ModMii, in my sig...... use the Wizard guide, it;ll ask you questions, and based on your answers, will download and generate a guide to follow for your pc. Just need a SD card to put the files onto, then to your Wii. Also a section with DLs for USB loading, formatting, and loader.
At this point, it won't hurt.......

Running cIOS249rev21 base56, and using CFG-loader 63a2. Same thing, time outs while mounting. Safe to say the drive is not compatible?

Are you using both heads of the USB cable in the Wii, or is the drive Externally powered?

The Wii has pretty ordinary power output for driving older standalone USB Drives/enclosures.

hey.

I am having similar trouble. I am on 4.2U firmware (custom) homebrew and eveything else. i have been playing my backups through the neogamma loader channel until now, but decided it woud be a lot sweeter if i could just pump all my games onto a hdd and then just play them off there. i followed this guide (http://gwht.wikidot.com/usb-loader) but then when it comes time to install the cfg usb loader, it timesout when trying to mount the drive (a 250 hdd formatted to FAT32, also tried NTFS, and also tried WBFS) nothing seems to work. i thought then it might be that the hdd is not compatible. so i tried using a 8GB flash drive i had to see if that would work (again, tried using WBFS and FAT32 formatting) but again no dice. i am plugging into the correct usb port so its not anything like that....

does anyone have any idea why nothing will mount...??? please help me.

Well gee, that's funny because the sticky thread for CFG USB Loader clearly states: "- install game on NTFS is disabled at the moment because of libntfs write instabilities (install on FAT works fine)". When did it get updated with the option to install a game to an ntfs hard drive?

Why don't all of you just use WiiFlow!!! T_T
It's really simple. Just put a wbfs file on the root of your NTFS hdd and put your wbfs folders/files in there and it works fine.

*edit* I'm saying this from experience, since my HDD is NTFS and I use wiiflow without partitioning.

It's not enabled by default but it is one of the configurable options and has worked quite nicely for me these past few months.

I see, if I had known that I probably wouldn't have formatted my drive for fat32....but either way everything I've been using: wii backups, emulators and multimedia have all been working great, so I'm in no hurry to switch over to ntfs.

hey,im a total noob to wii modding but i have read ALOT ,but im getting more and more confused on what to do the more i read,
ok so i have an old first production run wii ,really old system menu version,i forget which 1 tho, with a broken non d2-3 drive, that i want to fix or replace (minus the d2-3 motherboard ,of course)before i get started modding

anyway,i was thinking of using the latest modmii version (4.5.1,i think it is),to mod my virgin wii,but i noticed that the usb loader wizard section for using a loader with a ntfs partition only mentions cgf loader,
so can i use modmii(latest version)to mod my wii and install and use wiiflow and usb loader gx,with a drive(2tb) formatted with 2 partitions,1 fat32 and a much larger ntfs partition?and be able to put .wbfs games on the ntfs partition and rip games to the ntfs partition?also i know this prolly a real noob question but do all the latest versions of the 3 main loaders i mentioned above(or any of them)rip the games to the hdd, weather its ntfs or wbfs partitoned ,already "scrubbed"?i remember reading awhile back that you had to rip the game then put it on your pc and use an app on your pc to cut the iso file down from the 4.xx gb file size to a much smaller .wbfs file(if you wanted it to take up little space as possible),so is that a thing of past now?wil the new loader versions just rip my game to the hdd,to either a ntfs or wbfs partition as the smallest possible size .wbfs file?

i would like to have all 3 loaders installed ,just like i have many different loaders on my JB ps3 ,so i can switch it up if i want, will that be a problem?i've read about different loaders using or needing different ios's or cios files(not really to sure what they are or how they work, despite all i read and watching the 08'ccc wiihacking video)so can i just install all the files at once and then just be able to select and open/load any loader i want from a forwarder channel on my wii system menu ?or will i have to keep installing and uninstalling different ios or cios files evertime i want to use a different loader?dont the ios or cios fies occupy certain "slots".
i thought that i read something about 2 of the loaders using ios 249 and the other 1 using ios 222 or the other way arround, but im not really grasping the whole ios, cios thing so,im not sure how it works exactly, can they all be installed at once? or do they both need to be in the same "slot"so that i have to pick 1 or the other to be installed at once?
