Hi all

please forgive me for maybe asking those silly question,i am still a newbie, and willing to learn.

i have downloaded modmii and followed it's guide to softmod my 4.3E wii. now everything (almost) works fine.
unless i had the following two problems, everything else is working 100%.

1. Photo channel, it's no more working.
the case is:
when i start the photos channel, the wiimote blue light goes down, the TV screen becomes black, the wii power button is still green. pressing power button on wiimote doesn't shut the wii down, it's not responsive now and i can do nothing but hard shutdown it by pressing the power button on the wii itself for sometime, it then shuts down. if i start it up at this moment, everything else is working fine (it starts successfully).

2. System becomes dead when Using USB loader with USB configurator
the case is:
after selecting any game iso inside usb loader and play for some undetermined time, the system unexpectedly goes down, no power lights on wiimote, no power ligh on wii (not even red or orange light on the power button) it feels like a power failure is happening, i googled for this problem and found a video on youtube talking about it, the only solution as said is to completely remove power cable for sometime, (2 minutes) then put it on again, then start your wii and it'll be fine, that's acceptable for me once every a while, but this problem now occurs very often, i can't enjoy playing any backup-game via usbloader for more than mmmm around 15 minutes!

if anyone needs my SysCheck report:
here you go

PS: the wii-dead situation happens only when playing a game inside usb loader. doesn't occur when playing an original game.

Installation aborted due to errors.

but when i try to install Photo Channel 1.1 it install successfully.
still the same thing happened when i click the photo channel, wiimote goes dead, black screen on tv .. as described earlier.

QUOTE(Sao Mortel @ Oct 23 2010, 04:30 AM) Is your usb loader running off ios 249?

The situation sounds very odd. If you have a friend, you could try his power adapter. Also, if you have it plugged into a strip, try plugging it directly into the wall socket. Is it also possible that the Wii is overheating and shutting itself down? Make sure the fan is running when it's on. If you have wiiconnect24 on, it tends to heat the wii, so I would disable that too. As far as Photo Channel not working, it sounds like maybe it's a bad/corrupted wad of the channel? That's weird though, considering it's an official Nintendo Channel.

i dont believe any combination of loader and cios can actually turn your wii off, unless someone created a version of each with the sole intent to do so...your problem seems to be hardware related, not software, presumably power related at that.

if the usb drive doesnt have its own power supply maybe its drawing too much power from the wii.

yes, actually my usb drive doesn't have a separate power supply. but what i suppose is: either it runs or it doesn't at all (if wii power is less sufficient for it). am i wrong?

man , you're really a life saver !! thaaaaaaaaaank youuuuuuuuuuu
all i did is borrow a twin-head usb cable, that is meant to be used with usb drives, i connect the data head to the wii usb port closest to the edge and the power head to the other usb port, and woooohooo i've been playing for 3 hours !!!!

really really big thanks

I think the Photo Channel problem is related to an IOS. Not sure though.

EDIT: Looks like you need IOS13 v273.

This is awesome man ! thank you soooooo much, in that site, they mentioned that ios61 is the one used by photo channel 1.1 , i've downloaded and installed it via mmm and it's working 100% now,
really big thanks for all of you guys ! i feel so happy.

PS: for those ModMii developers, it seems that installation of Photo Channel 1.1 doesn't automatically downloads ios61 which is needed by it. please if someone can deliver this message to ModMii developers i am sure they'll be waiting our feedback.

thanks again, can someone mark this thread as solved?

if it runs better with the new cable I say its hardware
try connecting the drive to a real power supply

USB simply wasn't designed to handle the power requirements of harddrives
and only because its working for others means nothing
when running at 200% capacity even the smallest differences in production make a difference

Its (totally) out of (usb) spec equipment, what do you expect. It might do anything:
work, not work, work sporadically, crash and burn, work for a time until something breaks, ...

Only two options: risk it or don't

Personally I would avoid it. At least at everything that's not a newer (~3y) PC or laptop. They have a higher chance of having ports that can stand the abuse. This is nothing new after all.

The usb spec says that a bus powered device should not draw more than 0.5 amps from the usb bus 5V rail.

2.5 inch laptop drives are designed for low power consumption, as it's good for battery life. On the harddisk I am using it's written that it consumes 550 milliamps on the 5V rail. That's only 10 % above the allowed.

If the harddisk consumes more than the allowed, they might provide a cable with 2 usb connectors. The disk get's it's power from 2 ports, so it can consume up to 1 amp in theory.

As pc's have multiple usb ports, usually the power rail is simply connected to all ports together. So, they provide 2 amps for the 4 ports. If you draw more than that, a fuse can blow or the system will report that a device is consuming to much power. In such case, connecting the second usb connector of a bus powered harddisk with an Y cable isn't very usefull.

If you have doubts about the power consumption of your usb disk (without separate supply so a bus powered one), than you can connect it to a external powered usb hub. The hub will provide the power instead of the wii or pc. A bus powered hub will only allow 100mA power consumption on each of it's ports. The calculation behind that is 4 * 100mA (usually 4 ports) + 100mA for the hub electronics itself... makes a total of 500mA.
An usb hub is capable of detecting when an external supply is connected, and will only allow the connection of devices consuming more than 100mA when that condition is furfilled.

So, saying that bus powered usb harddisks totally ignore the specifications and will damage your usb device, is wrong.

It's possible that the wii 5V regulator isn't capable of providing 0.5 Amps on both it's usb ports, but there is absolutely no prove of it.
Wouldn't you expect them to use a different connector if they didn't want you to connect a normal usb device?

the drives I have seen (2.5 sata) require 1A or more not .55A
and more then .1A are only are only after asking (and getting) an OK
this drives don't ask they just do, thats what makes them out of spec
(well the ones I've seendo , there might be better ones)

the .5A was only the minimum amount of power that the controller has to support in total, not on each port
connect 2-3 of those drives and they might draw 3A without the controller (or hub) being able to stop them

I'm not saying that it WILL cause harm I say it MIGHT do
and there have been numerous reports of people with fried wii usb ports I attribute to exactly this problem

btw: wii + hub + usbloading does not work
