Addictive indie computer game Minecraft was knocked off it's little block wheels yesterday apparently by a group of self-identifying disenfranchised Minecraft players demanding more updates from the game's creator.

Developer Notch writes that the game's servers are getting hammered by a distributed denial of service, or DDOS, attack.

"A real world example would be running up to the cashier at a super market and paying in small coins, counting every single one really slowly, then finding out at the end you didn't have enough in the first place," Notch wrote on his Tumblr today. "The "Distributed" means it's done from a lot of places at the same time, so it's much harder to simply deny access to the clients that do that. Usually this is done via computers infected with trojans, so people participate in this without even knowing they're doing it.

"As to why minecraft.net is being targeted, I'm not sure."

A post on 4chan claiming responsibility for the attack says that the group launched the DDOS because they want more updates from Notch. They also point out they are not active 4chan members or people from rival games.

Here's the full statement. Do keep in mind we have no way of knowing whether these really are the people behind the ongoing attack.

Minecraft is currently experiencing a stimulation provided by us.

It's purpose is to send Notch a clear message of how the future of minecraft will turn out unless he gets to work, namely by influencing the amount of sales taking place, due to the attacks.

Start providing your customers with the updates that you promise them.

We have roughly 83,000 bots available, and preserved for this seizure, we could if we wanted to keep this going for weeks, however we have decided to give it a week, and see whether or not your attitude, and commitment will change, we believe it will when money stops rolling in for the time being...

anyhow, no we're not from roblox, or any other minecraft clone, not to mention none of us have been around 4chan for years, and nor has any real 4channers for that matter, its all newfags now, and has been for quite a few years."

Is the official quote. I don't know the origin of the quote, but it is happening.

So if you're missing your daily Minecraft fix, just keep in mind that you can apparently blame other Minecraft fans for the problem.

The DDoS attack continues, I'll just get back to coding, then. [The Word of Notch, thanks Pigmassacre]

Wow that attack seems childish and completely pointless. Some people need to grow up. If you don't like it, play a different game...or go outside and do something. I was trying to figure out why I couldn't get on, I had decided to give this game a try after being lazy and kinda taking a break from Vindictus and well this happened.

What childish people, only 5 people are working on this game and they want to increase the speed of more updates when there is one coming out in 2 weeks? -_-'
Even a facepalm is not enough....

If they paid for promised updates they never got, then they have a right to feel cheated.
Not like doing this will speed up their demands, either, seems to have more negatives than positives.

That's my point too, doing this is just going to hinder rather than help. That's like some kid not getting to play his parent's Xbox so the kid breaks it so no one gets to play.

Agreed. Sadly, even if promised updates aren't coming, there's really nothing anyone can do.
Pushing for more updates in such a manner has no positive outcome. Notch knows people want updates.

I would like to see more minor bug fix updates with SMP. Things like fixing the "drop tools" exploit, or the crops-not-growing-without-right-clicking issue.

Oh and another thing (just my idea):

Notch should consider getting SMP actually working instead of giving updates that are only effective in SSP.
It's been said that SMP will be fully functioning only at the last stage before Beta.

I mean, you can't die, can't kill anything with weapons, can't use minetracks/carts, can't use redstone well... seems kind of urgent to get these kinds of things done, yes? Not assuming anything yet, the Halloween update could fix some of these issues, but none of the people over at the MC forums believes so.

Just my two cents on what should be prioritized first.

I'm sure he's trying his best with the updates, but real life does come first. Sometimes things just happen, if it is constantly happening and he's not trying then that's a different story, but he wants this to be successful, so I doubt he is just screwing off, sometimes things don't go according to plan, and people just need to accept that.

Alpha

If you paid for the game knowing full well that this game is in alpha then you shouldn't be complaining.
Of course there is going to be bugs, lack of updates (but he makes up for it for big updates). Who cares if SMP is buggy and doesn't work properly? The game is still in alpha

You pre-purchased the full game, what you're getting now is a bonus.

How am I complaining?

You've missed the point of my post.
INSTEAD of working on "eye candy" such as new biomes, he could've spent that time fixing up SMP.

I wasn't expecting SMP to be fully functional when I bought the game nor am I expecting it to be done soon. It's what I think should be worked on first.

He's selling it, it's a real job, so this is real life. If other things take that much of a priority he can't update it to fix bugs they are paying to find for him (I bet a few companies are seeing how that pans out so they can also make money when they should be spending it) he shouldn't have released a paid for alpha. Maybe a little more communication about what will be fixed in the next update would stop people getting so sore about it. Not that I agree with the tactics.

This people are stupid....How do they expect to speed things up like this? It's like they shot him in the arm and told him to run faster. It makes no sense. The ignorance of people these days.

What. The. Fuck. Notch started developing Minecraft while being part of a different "company", so he didn't expect that the game would sell anyway. Real job? No, just no. He made Minecraft his job after seeing that it sold well. Yes, he's earned much with his "job", but he also puts lots of that earned money back into Minecraft. Have you got any idea of how expensive the servers are that host Minecraft? Sure, Notch can easily travel 'round the world with the money he's earned, but he doesn't. That is, he only does it for the future of Minecraft or his company. Though I do agree with you that Notch should talk more with the community.

Talk about the wrong way to go about things... Seems like a bunch of whiny brats decided to imitate 4chan, except their target isn't really justified, nor is it productive. I don't really see their logic behind doing this.

Congratz! You're intarweb terrorists, assholes!

Exactly!

The word "alpha" alone should be enough of a hint that the game is still in its infancy.

In all honesty, I think Notch was being rather nice by letting us enjoy the game, and enabling us to watch it grow up with us. When they released Minecraft in its Alpha stages, I'm sure they did it so we could fill them in with bug reports and suggestions, to get the game progressing at as fast of a pace as they could. Whatever asinine congregation of impatient dolts that are doing this are simply inhibiting their own wishes.

Taken from the Minecraft Terms and Conditions

"Although we are very passionate about this project, we cannot guarantee that it will be completed - that's why we offer the discounted price
When you purchase the game, you pay for it as it is right now. Future updates are an added bonus."

They have no room to be complaining, They were informed that it may never be finished and that they are paying for what the game currently is. You should always read these things when purchasing something of this nature. Hell for all they knew it could have said they were going to be billed 5 more times upon completion of they game and they would have had no idea

Old news is old.

Anyway, these people need to calm down. If they really have 83,000 bots available, then this could last for months, not weeks.
