I understand why you wouldn't want to risk homebrew, but this guide is very good and most people prefer homebrew over modchips and you won't lose any comatibility with games. If you just follow the guide you'll be fine.

boof... thanks for the quick reply.

but man, i don't know. i'm not one tinker with something drastically if it aint broke. in other words, my current setup is just fine. most games work. seems as though the majority of issues are coming from newer released games. if a simple wii update will fix the issue (or at the very least not break the chip to play the older games) i would be will to try it. i honestly dont want to go through the softmod if i really dont have to.

does anyone with chip knowledge know if the wii updates affect the use of the chip? i thought i remember someone saying they dont... in other words, i can update the wii all day long and the chip will continue to work as it was intended.

thanks again boof for your reply.
No problem man.
I don't really know too much about modchips for the wii but I'm sure someone around here knows. And if you do decide to softmod, you're not tinkering with it too drastically, all of it can be undone if you change your mind and it's not as hard as it looks.

thanks again. i'm currently on page 53 of the wii - hacking sub-forum and have yet come across a post with my exact issue (hard mod, safe to run all updates, fix 002 error)... but i'm determined not to stop until i find it. also, i have read some interesting threads in those last 52 pages. before i bought the wii, i schooled myself here on which direction to go with how to mod. i decided to go with hard because at the time it seemed to be the simplest to do. we'll see. thanks again!

been ridin smooth on my wii since nov 2008 when i installed my d2pro... http://www.ozmodchips.com/solderless-d2pro...ng-p-162.html... which i just upgraded the d2pro9 firmware to 1.8

i have running into some error code 002's lately on a handful of games. my current wii version is 3.4u. do i run any risks connecting my wii to the internet and updating the firmware?

i do not have any instance of homebrew installed. never used it. only the d2pro9 chip. my only concern with updating past 3.4u is not being able to play any games after that (new or old). my reasoning for updating the firmware is to get past the 002 error codes (these codes are on newer released games)

do i have anything to worry about? can i move forward with updating the wii firmware? i'm hoping to not go the route of homebrew to fix the 002 issue.

thanks in advance.

Just follow this modding guide, and install neogamma, you will be MUCH happier in the long run...

Oh no.... everything worked fine until I got to the "Installing cIOS & Patching the System Menu IOS (The good stuff!)" Section...

I pressed right to go to WAD manager.
Then I Pressed 1 to select all the WAD's then A to install them. (Just like the guide told me)
But when it finished, it gave me a message the read something like:

"? -Not Completed."
I tried it again but got the same report.

So I let it be and continued on with the guide and tried to install Priiloader, but it gave me a message that said somethig like:

"Identify Failure"
Was this because of the failed installation I mentioned before?

If any one could help me I would be seriously grateful.

Thanks in advance!

Sound like 236 didn't install correctly, try the guide again starting with that step...

How are you able to create the WAD files for cIOS?
I'm trying to create a WAD from the cMIOS that I installed using the recommended cMIOS for Neogamma http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=219243
Using Waninkoko's WAD Creator just results in an error for me. Do you have something else you use could recommend to create a WAD from my NAND?

>> Retrieving TMD...
ERROR! (ret = -1017)

-----------------------------------------------------
I downgraded cIOS249 to version 14 and was then able to run WAD Creator. I now have a MIOS.WAD (it is a little bigger than the official MIOS from NUS, but that is probably just the hacks).
I'm still interested in what you use to create your WADs if you could please tell me.

I used bluedump to create these...

That app sure is hard to get a hold of. I did get one version (don't know if it is the normal or fake-signing) which seems to do the job - even with cIOS249rev20.
I find it so much easier installing WADs instead of running individual installers for everything.

He updated the guide, but doesn't have MMM using ahbprot (which it shouldn't until it gets compile with the latest libogc so it doesn't brick people while they are trying to install a system menu
smile.gif
) Download the latest IOS236 installer and try

Do you mean the "Installing a Trucha'd IOS into slot 236." Section?

Oh, I skipped that step because right under that the guide said in red: "VERY IMPORTANT! ONLY APPLIES TO 4.3"

Since I'm only 4.2u I skipped that... was I not supposed too?

I see what you mean, I'm not sure why he put that there... Maybe he put the ahbprot tag inside the 4.3 pack (hopefully no one tries to install the patched ios80 and it locks up, or else they will have a nice brick
frown.gif
)

Just download the older 42mod pack, and instead of using MMM to trucha, launch ios236 installer and use it

see, that is why softmod is so confusing to a new noob, and specifically why i chose hardmod.

let's see, softmod and risk missing a step or following bad directions and bricking your wii... or hardmod, open wii, snap on solderless chip, close wii, enjoy. gotta say, seems like a no brainer.

I am proud to say that of the thousands of people who have used ModMii, I have NOT had even ONE report of a single person bricking as a result of using ModMii to softmod their Wii.

Besides... what do hardmods really accomplish? Backup disc loading and only on older model wii's? If u want usb-loading and other great things, u still need to softmod.

Anyways, @ recacer, I'm sure after u learn what a softmodded wii is capable of u will change ur mind about softmodding.

xflac... thanks for you reply. i wasn't out to bash any person or mod method... after reading through 102 pages of the forum last night (obviously not every post, but enough to make my eyes hurt)... i got the impression that a lot can go wrong when doing softmod. i have no doubt that there is an advantage in some form with softmod. i'm just questioning if it is really worth it. i use the wii for playing wii games only. no homebrew, no dvd playing, nothing web related, just plain old playing games.

i wouldn't mind trying softmod... it's just all the posts mentioning low brick, semi brick, total brick seem to relate to softmod. i dont think i read one topic on a bricked wii when all that was involved was a chip. i'll continue to toss around the idea of this guide and if it is really worth it for me. i have dl'ed the files... just not in any hurry to try it.

thanks again for your reply.

Alright, so I just downloaded the the older 42mod pack, and it's now on my SD card.
Do I need to restart from the Section were I first used the 42 mod pack and just follow the directions again until I get to the "Installing a Trucha'd IOS into slot 236." section? (Will I also have to redo my NAND backup?)

(By the way, thank you for your help and patience, I'm trying my best to not be a noob

No, just launch ios236 installer, and install ios236 (if you don't have an active internet connection, it will code dump several times, just keep trying until it completes...) Then load MMM and continue on past the trucha bug section...
