Okay so here are the apps I most frequently used... on my shitty Moto CliqXT that ran off the shitty 1.5 firmware and has just been sold off to some shitty guy. So all of these apps should work fine on whatever phone you have.

Astro - A file manager app. Lets you install external APKs (app installer files) off SD card and other memory locations, directly on phone. My CliqXT didn't let me install external APKs for some reason, and that's really the only reason I used this app.

Chess - Some fun game or something iono

Dolphin Browser - Best browser liek evars. The newest one is Dolphin Browser HD2 and that SHOULD work on your phone. It didn't work on my because I was on old ass 1.5 fw, so I had to use the regular version (non-HD). ;_;

ColorNote - Sticky note app. You can make post it notes and stick them on your home screen tiny widgets if you want.

Google Maps - I'm always lost always.

Google Sky Map - Cool app that uses your GPS or compass to display what's overhead above you (constellations, moons, etc) in the sky in real-time (kind of), moves along with you.

Shazam - Hold your phone up to a song that you don't know for a few seconds and it will detect it, retrieve tons of info about song, artist, album, etc

Sherpa - App that uses your GPS to locate a number of hotspots near you, broken into categories such as Food, Movies, Hotels, BLAHBLAHBLAH "LIEK WHAT'S THERE TO EAT AROUND HERE?" IS ALL I USE IT FOR

Slacker - Internet radio thingy. I imagine it's like Pandora, but isn't there a Pandora app on the Android already? Yea, you should probably get Pandora.

SuperYatzy - zomg I love Yahtzee.

Very useful post. I'll normally change my cellphone on Wednesday (I insist on normally, because everytime I want to change it, something bad happens...) for a Samsung Galaxy S, so I'll definitively come here to share my experiences with the application I'll use

@Ritsuki

Oh, sweet, which phone from the Galaxy S series in particular? I made the mistake of selling off my CliqXT before having a solid deal on a second phone, so I'm currently trying to hunt down a Samsung Vibrant (from the Galaxy S series).

Android has some really great apps, hope you have a memorable experience!

Unfortunately, there is no modified versions of the Galaxy S in Switzerland, so I think it will be the good ol' one. We aren't very advanced in mobile technologies (no 4G phones, and most of the HTC phones are unavailable there...)

GameBoid (and all other Emus from the same DEV) are awesome and working really well on my old Hero. Playing Pokémon is the best time-killer for me, and works fine via Touchscreen

.

Other than that, I'm not such a big App-Freak, I regulary use Tweetdeck (Beta, great Twitter-Client), Battstatt/Tajm/Snowstorm (Widgets, for the looks), Wavesecure (awesome Protection-App, got it while it was free), LauncherPro (really smooth Launcher, especially for Vanilla ROMs), MusicMOD (pimps the Stock Player a bit), Dropbox, Wordpress, Tumblr, Simple Last.fm Scrobbler (Uninteresting if you aren't registered there).

! Well, you could get a Desire, great phone, and feels much better than a Samsung Galaxy S, belive me. The Galaxy feels like plastic, and I don't really like it. Otherwise, I got my Hero from Digitec, they're sometimes importing phones, so you could look what they have in stock...

Hey, I was considering making an Essentials: Android thread.

Anyway, I have a Tricorder app (one of my favourite installed apps; it uses the built-in phone sensors to act as a proper scanner. Acceleration sensing, magnetic flux detection, acoustic sensors, geographic information readouts, electromagnetic spectral analysis and solar activity which it downloads from SOHO. Great little app, and free.

I also have an application showing a Bit (from TRON). Simplistic; tap it and it will either say yes or no, just as it did in the film. I like messing with that too.

Might mention some more when I can.

you are missing some essential apps for camera use too

retro camera i love this one it takes some ace pics
vignette is ok allows you to customise the effects on your pics
picsay allows you to add items into the pics and change and cut the pics this one has a really good undo feature for the pics when you mess them up

then there is

advanced task killer cause the mount of stuff running in the background is shocking
talking cat cause it's a kitteh

Advanced Task Killer is a ridiculous app. Most of that background stuff is minor stuff that's actually part of the OS or something you want running. Keep something like Watchdog running, if there's something that's being a memory hog or acting out of line it'll let you know.

Also, Dropbox is pretty much an absolute must-have. Just register and account, set it up on your PC, download the app onto your Android device, and then just drop anything you need moved over onto the Android device into your computer's Dropbox folder, up to 2 gigs worth unless you want to pay for more.

well thanks for your opinion on that but i happen to find it extremely useful. it stops many things running that are supposed to be shut down or stuff that starts up that i don't want running, which others in the forum may find useful and that's what this is about, isn't it? the app doesn't blow after all.

erm don't you know about double posting?

Just got my Samsung Galaxy S yesterday (awesome phone btw). So here's my selection :

Apps :

-AppBrain App Market : A good alternative to Android Market. You can manage more easily your apps with it (update, un/install,...)
-Dropbox : Simple way to install .apk files or move your files without USB
-Google Sky Map : Not really useful, but fun
-Barcode Scanner : One of the most useful apps in the market
-PingChat : Nice if you have a lot of friends using it
-WiFinder : Very useful to manage WiFi connection quickly
-APN/SMS Backup & Restore : 2 apps really useful for backups (orly ?)
-APNdroid : Blocks 3G signal
-3G Watchdog : Coupled with APNdroid, blocks automatically 3G signal when you reach a certain amount of traffic
-Google Translator

Games :

-Paper Toss : A classical
-Asphalt 5 : I'm not really into racing games, but this one is really well done
-2 Player reactor : A 2 players game based on the rapidity of your reactions. A MUST HAVE
-Krazy Kart Racing : A mario kart-like. Funny but nothing more.
-Zenonia : One of the rare RPGs on Android. Very complete and fun. Looks like Secret of Mana. AWESOME GAME
-Gameboid : A GBA Emulator
-MiniSquadron : A basic game where you have to destroy planes with yours. Very basic but lots of content (56 planes available, multiplayer mode on local wifi, survival mode, classic mode,...) WARNING : VERY ADDICTIVE !!!
