My first linux was Knopix autoboot CD (I don't know which linux it is based of).
I wanted to try linux and see the difference from windows.

I never found how to change screen resolution (320*240 was REALLY horrible)
I never understood anything

I couldn't connect to the net, because my usb modem driver had to be compiled and I didn't know how .... allllllll linux is "do it yourself without any help, you should be born with the knowledge !"
I left linux world for few years

Then, I discovered VMware, and decided to try again.
I run Ubuntu, and it was much easier, user friendly, windows like user interface

I'm now using this Ubuntu(6.10)-VMware for my Firefox's Add-on development, testing and debugging purpose only.

I wish I could have a Mac OSX Vmware so I could debug my add-on on that OS too

I started using in the Ubuntu 6.04 days, I believe I was a freshman in high school. I didn't really care for it, ran pretty bad compared to winxp and didn't have the drivers I needed.
Last year I started trying to use linux again, and now use wubi to dual boot my main laptop, I have the wubi vhd on a external hdd, so I can't use it anywhere, but I have a Arch VM that I use, if I need something linux related tested.

Right now im trying to find a distro that will work good with my mini 311, Nothing like's either of the wifi cards it has installed.

My goal would be to have my netbook tri-boot OSX, Win7, and some linux variant.

I used Ubuntu 10.04 for a while when Windows 7 had a problem. After a recent reinstall of Windows I'm dual-booting with Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 3, but I don't really use it much now that Windows works well.

First time I ran Linux would be Ubuntu. That was about a year or two ago. I've tried a few distros such as Linux Mint, Fedora, Arch, and PCLinuxOS. At this point I am using Crunchbang Statler. I pretty much use it for everything but gaming and the few apps I don't have on here but I do in Windows. I dual boot Windows and Crunchbang. I love openbox.

Just FYI, it's not possible to not answer a question in the poll, so you'll have to add an "I never used it" option to the last question.

I have used Ubuntu before, though not very often.

The "how often" question misses having multiple computers. I use Windows on my client pcs (gaming), and only Linux on my servers.

Oh and just fyi, ubuntu is based on debian

I know it's based on Debian, but I thought that was well know so I don't list it.

Besides from what I heard, Ubuntu's code is significantly different on some level from Debian.

I run Win7 Ultimate as my main OS, but usually have some *nix distro installed as an "instant-on" OS (plus I can run it in a VM). Currently it's CrunchBang Statler, previously it was Arch.

However I run *nix on all my dedi machines.

Put Ubuntu netbook remix on my netbook, worked until they upgraded it to 10.04 and now my wi-fi card doesn't work, so I'm using a hokey version on Win 7 till they fix it.

I've been using Linux since about 2005. The distros I've use the most are Debian and Arch, though in the past I've used Mandriva and Fox as my primary distro. I also have Slackware installed as the only OS on my secondary Laptop, but I haven't used it much due to my Desktop almost always being more convenient.

My window manager (no full DEs here) of choice is Openbox, with either PyPanel or tint2, depending on my mood, providing a tasklist and system tray.

You have the same taste as me, I've always used those (except on one machine that had stock GNOME that I couldn't change)

I used Redhat linux as my primary OS back when I had a secondhand Pentium II laptop in the early 2000s. Win NT (2000 and XP) ran too slow, and 9x was too unstable, so it was a good compromise between stability and speed. When I replaced that computer, what I got came with XP and ran it very well. I havent used Linux as a primary OS since. I've played around with Ubuntu and its various flavors, but I never find anything that makes me want to stick with it over Windows. Its definitely good, but if anything it always winds up slower than Windows while having less software running.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
