First of all, I apologize if anything that I ask or mention in this topic is covered at some point in this forum; there's a LOT of information on this forum and even though I put aside about four hours to wade through topics and absorb it, I feel like I am still pretty uninformed.

I recently (about two weeks ago)bought a DS that came with an M3Simply card. It also came with a 2gb microSD loaded up with firmware. I guess the first issue is that I don't know what firmware I have. When I boot up my card and choose to browse, it says "Final revision: 26-06-2009" so I assume this is fairly outdated. However I was able to run spirit tracks, kingdom hearts 358/2 (or whatever), dragonquest ix, warioware D.I.Y and pokemon HG/SS with no problems that are being experienced by other people. I was even reading comments on Demonoid from people with the same flash cart as me and they were also having problems that I wasn't experiencing. Does this mean the previous owner was keeping up with the scene? Am I just unexplainably lucky or something?

Well, either way, my actual confusion comes into play when I experiment with an R4 that I bought for my wife around the same time I bought my own DS. I put WarioWare D.I.Y on her brand new card and obviously was experiencing some issues. I then browsed around and came across a link which included an archive titled "R4 firmware 1.18 and YSmenu v1.17a12 (For R4)". There wasn't any specific instructions on how to install it so I just dragged and dropped. I booted up the DS and there was there's a TTDS folder with no files that I can run within it. Is this folder containing the firmware that YSmenu runs?

Anyways, I was experimenting and reading around which finally led me to the solution of having to run the untrimmed WarioWare D.I.Y file through YSmenu, though I (nor did my wife) did not experience any issues with saving or freezing after extensive play, so I assumed I didn't need to make use of the "32 meg save file" work-around.

I came on here later and started to read more in-depth on different flash carts and firmwares. Apparently M3 has discontinued their support for the M3Simply; does this mean I'm screwed if a problem with a ROM comes up concerning firmware? Or is there some kind of group pushing out releases? Given the history of me not having problems with other recent releases, should I even concern myself?

I also came around to reading about "Wood R4" after seeing it get mentioned seldomly by some people. This is also another firmware released by fans trying to continue to support the R4, correct?

This is about the time where I get confused; do I have to experiment and choose between Wood R4 and TTDS/YSmenu for firmware for my wife's R4 revolution? Is there one that is clearly superior in terms of compatability or support of developers? Is one outdated and I'm just not realizing it?

I apologize if some of these things are common knowledge. I literally just got her R4 today and have been trying to see what is the most reliable road to go on.

Thanks to anybody who bothers to answer.

PharaohsVizier,

Thanks for the information. I believe I understand; since the R4 Revolution and M3Simply are so similar, I can just throw R4 Wood on both my wife's R4 and my M3 with practically the same results?

Thanks,

Yes wood should work on the M3 Simply. Take a look at the Wood guide in my signature, that will tell you how to easily setup as an NDS file which you can run from within your M3 software. If it works fine and you like it, then you can set it up as your main OSMenu.

Surely, I had already followed your guide only minutes after making my previous post. Very thorough guide; I did replace my M3 firmware with Wood R4 1.11. Everything has worked perfectly on both cards, however Heroes of Mana (U) crashes (only on my M3, not my wife's R4) 2:37 into the introductory cutscene. I had intended to post this in the compatability thread but I realize it's probably more of an M3 issue. Other than that, everything has been perfect.

if it crashes during a cutscene, it might be a fragmentation problem. Backup, format, copy back. works when i can't play a game that i know should work.
