I'm sorry to bother you people here at GBAtemp with this presumably no-brainer question but I'd like to get a quick answer on this issue.

I currently own a Wii (Ver. 3.3E) which I softmodded a couple of weeks ago in order to run games off a USB drive.

Here's a list of the software I used:

- bannerbomb (to run the HackMii installer)
- HackMii (to install The Homebrew Channel)
- The Homebrew Channel; on top of which are installed:
------ Dop-Mii (v12) (used to restore the Trucha bug)
------ cIOS38r17 (can't even remember what I used this for, I presume this was necessary in order to use USB Loader GX)
------ USB Loader GX (which has been working flawlessly)

Now with the issue:
I wanna run an original Wii game (non-backup) which requires an update.

I was conscious that softmodding my Wii I would've run into some troubles at the next Wii update. Point is, I've never done a Wii update! Even when my system was a "virgin"...

I also assume that updating my wii is gonna cause some trouble to my already installed (homebrew) software (in fact, the first line of every softmodding guide I consulted reads "Do not update your Wii to 4.2"). But, my question is, what kind of trouble?

I did some research and as far as I learned, updating your softmodded Wii to a new version (I repeat, I don't know how an update works but I can suppose it's a pretty easy procedure) doesn't cause any major problem (i.e. it doesn't brick your wii or grant you a ban or stuff...); and all you're supposed to do is just re-softmod your Wii.

Now, if that's the case, it's a cakewalk and I should encounter no more problems than I did the first time i.e. ZERO.

Problem is... is this "the case"? Or to express that in a better phrasing:

1) Is this what happens when you update a softmodded Wii? (it just nullifies your softmod)
2) Can you re-softmod it the way you did the first time? (or should you take further precautions?)

I take the occasion to thank the whole GBAtemp staff for the wonderful softmodding and wii hacking material hosted on your website

games do not require a specific version of system menu - just use a WAD Manager and install the IOS you need. Install priiloader and tell it to skip disc updates. I am on 3.2 and not found a game i cant run yet.

Thank you for your answer! (which I didn't understand completely due to my incompetence though...
rolleyes.gif
)

So if games don't need updates, why would anyone want to update their console?

Which eventualities require you to update your Wii? I think I heard some time ago that you need them in order to use a Wii motionplus ore an SDHC card, could that be correct?

I didn't fully understand the procedure described by you in your post in order to disable disc updates (but THANKS anyway!!!), though, I could find some useful info here about a SW called StartPatch:

http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/sy...acks/Startpatch

WiiBrew (in this page http://wiibrew.org/wiki/StartPatch#Download) says installing this piece of software has very small chance of bricking my Wii. I can't find my System Menu version in the "Download" section though...

versions 3.2, 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 are listed but I can't see my version (3.3)! Which one should I get?

Please answer ASAP!

Thank you very much!

My apologies - as you are on 3.3 you do need to update in order to run start patch or priiloader to prevent disc updates as there are no hacks for that version of system menu. Follow the sticky guide to update your wii to 4.2 and then install priiloader or startpatch to block disc updates.

Ok, then I guess we're pretty much back to the start...

1) how do I update my Wii? Officially? In that case, do I have a choice as to which version to install? (never did an update)

2) What happens next? do I just repeat the softmodding procedure?

Well, thank you very much for your answer but I gotta tell ya... I can't seem to find these stickies you guys are talking about... (please forgive my incompetence...)

Upon further research though I came accross this guide:
http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/ha...-guide/updating

It's from the mighty "Complete SoftModding Guide" so I would assume it's pretty reliable.

Is it OK if I follow that refered to as the "simple update"?
Will this operation nullify my softmod? i.e. do I have to softmod from scratch once again?

The stickied guides are at the top of the page here
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?act=SF&s=&f=108

the complete softmod guide page u linked to has links to my NUS Auto Downloader program (which is one of the stickies people are talking about). But NUS Auto Downloader has been updated since that page on the CSG was written, so now things are even easier.

Just download NUSAD from my signature, run it, run the download wizard, and your life will be easy.

Hey there guys!

I finally got the upgrade thing right... I'm on 4.2E right now. I'm starting StartPatch but I get a message:

[EDIT]
Tried 36 and 249: (disc updates block) patch installs just fine but it actually doesn't work... when I put in the disk I get the Splash Screen, then hit Start and all goes black. and nothing happens... [unistalled]

Tried 70: gives me some kinda error... [unistalled]

Please help me out...

startpatch? ehh... just use that NUSAD and have it download priiloader, has all the hacks and just works... also installs all the cIOS files you'll need (222, 223, 249, 250, etc)

edit: and if I understand correctly, geckoOS is the option for non-backup games

Sounds like the patch worked as intended, problem is your missing the games required Ios, Install the disc update block patch again, then run the game through Geckos atleast one time so geckos will install the required IOS, then it should work fine through the disc channel

Oh well... now that's making my head spin quite a bit....

I'll get my disc update block patch back up. (should I use 249?????)

---

What's the deal with IOSs now???
And what the hell is Geckos ????? (is it this: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Geck:wtf:S )
It says it's used to play games from different regions (which is not my case...)

Should I do this procedure for every single non-backup game I run?

---

Please give me straight answers cause I'm getting very confused...

I'm sorry if I was rude... your help has been vastly appreciated.

Although, if you could just address these few concerns of mine I'd be much more thankful

Which specific Geckoos version should i get?

@Riley:
is it risky to install priiloader?
if i install priiloader, do i need to do this geckoos thing?

one of the features of GeckoOS is it can install the updated files that the game is asking for, without the mess of an official nintendo update.

And priiloader is, among other things, PROTECTION AGAINST risky things. Priiloader can block internet and disc updates so that you don't accidentally install them, and so that you can update what you want when you want either manually or through GeckoOS.

Here's a NUS Auto Downloader Download Wizard Guide to (re)hack your 3.3E Wii and update to 4.2E

Code:
NUS Auto Downloader 4.1.5 Custom Guide
Generated on 09/07/2010 - 23:28:23.20
Check for updates at tinyurl.com/nusauto

This Guide was generated using the following parameters:

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ * Wii is currently a virgin (un-modified)
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ * Current firmware is less than 4.0e (guide is the same for U/E/J, although files may differ)
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ * Desired firmware is 4.2e

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ * Download Extra Brick Protection

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ * Update active IOSs

This software is not for sale. If you paid for this software or a "bundle" you have been scammed.

THIS PACKAGE COMES WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY, NEITHER STATED NOR IMPLIED.
NO ONE BUT YOURSELF IS TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE THIS MAY CAUSE TO YOUR NINTENDO WII CONSOLE!
USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

*This guide does NOT require a Wifi connection on your Wii.
*An SD card formatted to FAT(32) required (Best results are with non-SDHC cards, SDHC will only work on 4.0 or above).
*If you get errors during any of the steps reformat your SD card as FAT or FAT32
*Turn off WiiConnect24 and take out all gamecube memory cards/controllers when modding the Wii (unless instructed otherwise).
*If your Wii ever freezes, hold the power button on the Wii for 5 seconds to power it off then try again.
*Don’t ever accept a new Nintendo update without first googling to see if it’s safe. The last update (to 4.3) was released in late June 2010 and is NOT safe to accept. If you accept an official Nintendo update after modding the Wii, you may lose some or all of your modifications.
*Updates via homebrew or homebrew apps are safe to accept
*Never uninstall a system menu or IOS
*Do not install untested wads/themes without Bootmii or Priiloader installed.
*This custom guide is great start, but Wii modding is always evolving. Check for updates online, and remember, google is your friend.
*If you have questions, a more detailed guide can be found here: http://www.completesoftmodguide.tk

1) INSTALLING THE HOMEBREW CHANNEL (HBC), BOOTMII AND DVDX

Run BannerBomb v1 by going to Settings, Data Management, Channels, SD Card and choosing yes to load boot.dol/elf
Note: If it doesn't work for you, visit http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/ for more variations of either version of bannerbomb.
This runs the Hackmii Installer which you should now use to install the Homebrew Channel (HBC), DVDX [optional], and Bootmii as IOS and boot2 if possible.

Note: If you get a 'no vulnerable IOS' error message, run NUS Auto Downloader again and this time select the 'Hackmii Solutions' option instead of 'Download Wizard' and follow the new instructions before continuing this guide.

After you exit the hackmii installer, you will be taken to the HBC.
Hit the home button. In the top right corner you will see the IOS used by the HBC.

If the HBC is using an IOS other than IOS61 or your homebrew channel is upside-down, make a note of it as it applies later in the guide (you will have to reinstall the HBC).

If it is using IOS61 and your HBC is not upside-down, you can skip the Reinstall The Homebrew Channel step when you get to it.

2) MAKING A NAND BACKUP

Restart your Wii, if Bootmii was installed as boot2, then it will show up as soon as the Wii is turned on.
If Bootmii was only installed as an IOS, then it must be loaded by pressing home in the HBC and clicking Launch Bootmii.
Press the power button on the wii 3 times to get to the last option, then press the reset button. [You can also navigate with a Gamecube controller]

Press reset to choose the first option, then follow the directions on the screen to make your NAND backup. [Bad blocks are no problem.]

Backup the Bootmii folder, NAND.bin, and keys.bin elsewhere and erase from the sd card (or rename it). You'll need these in case of emergencies, so don't lose them.
Head back to The Homebrew Channel.

3) RESTORING THE TRUCHA BUG

Start the Homebrew Channel and use it to load Multi-Mod Manager (MMM).
In MMM, Go down to select "Install & Patch IOS36" and choose express mode.

4) INSTALL WADS

In Multi-Manager Mod's main menu, Go down to select "WAD Manager".

Install the following WADs in the WAD folder (this list of WADs is unique to how you answered the Wizard's questions).

Be careful not to install any additional wads that may have been previously saved in this folder (they may be safe, but I cannot say for sure).

Hold + for 2 seconds to select all wads in the folder. Then Press A twice to install them all.
After the installation finishes read the install report to make sure all the files installed properly.

ÂÂÂÂ You're unique list of wads to install are as follows:

ÂÂÂÂ * System Menu 4.2E
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS11v257(IOS60v6174[FS-ES-NP])
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS20v257(IOS60v6174[FS-ES-NP])
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS30v2817(IOS60v6174[FS-ES-NP])
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS50v5121(IOS50v4889[FS-ES-NP])
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS60v6401(IOS60v6174[FS-ES-NP])
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS70v6913(IOS70v6687[FS-ES-NP])
ÂÂÂÂ * cIOS202[57]-v5
ÂÂÂÂ * cIOS223[37-38]-v4
ÂÂÂÂ * cIOS222[38]-v5
ÂÂÂÂ * cIOS224[57]-v5
ÂÂÂÂ * cIOS249[57]-v19
ÂÂÂÂ * cIOS250[37]-v19
ÂÂÂÂ * cMIOS-MPv0.2-v4
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS9v778
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS12v269
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS13v273
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS14v520
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS15v523
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS17v775
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS21v782
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS22v1037
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS28v1550
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS31v3349
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS33v3091
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS34v3348
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS35v3349
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS37v3869
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS38v3867
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS53v5406
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS55v5406
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS56v5405
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS57v5661
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS58v6175
ÂÂÂÂ * IOS61v5661

If any failed, make a note of which ones and retry installing them.

Note: Whenever you install a new System Menu, Priiloader is uninstalled. So be sure to reinstall it afterwards (especially if you do not have bootmii as boot2)

5) REINSTALL THE HOMEBREW CHANNEL (if applicable)

Earlier you should have checked what IOS is used by the HBC. If the IOS used by your Homebrew Channel is IOS61 and your HBC is not upside-down, you can skip this step.

If the HBC is using an IOS other than IOS61 or your homebrew channel is upside-down, you should reinstall the HBC.

In MMM's main menu, select 'App Manager' and then select the HackMii_Installer.
Use the Hackmii Installer to fix/re-install the HBC. Once you've successfully reinstalled the HBC, you can move onto the next step of the guide.

If you already exited MMM, you can load the HackMii_Installer from the Homebrew Channel.

If the HBC is failing to load any apps (just blackscreens), instead launch the HackMii Installer via bannerbomb.
Run BannerBomb v1 by going to Settings, Data Management, Channels, SD Card and choosing yes to load boot.dol/elf
Note: If it doesn't work for you, visit http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/ for more variations of either version of bannerbomb.

This will the launch HackMii Installer, use it to reinstall your Homebrew Channel.

6) INSTALL PRIILOADER

Run the Priiloader installer from the HBC. On the main menu screen, press + to install Priiloader.
(if the installation fails, try holding B and press + to install Priiloader using IOS249)
It should now reboot in the Priiloader menu. If it doesn't, power off the wii,
then power it back on and hold reset while it's booting until you see it.

The priiloader menu is white by default, you can change it to black in the settings if you prefer.
If you want, you can install some system menu hacks now (by going to System Menu hacks).

One of the special functions of Priiloader is that it can autoboot any file instead of the system menu. Some apps (like crazyIntro) can't be used without it.
For details on how to do so, visit http://www.completesoftmodguide.tk/system-hacks/priiloader

7) AFTER MODDING

Now at this point your almost done.
Now you should be downloading the latest homebrew applications and setting them up on your SD Card (or FAT32 USB Hard Drive) so they can be launched via the HBC.

For downloading applications, you should:
* Download Homebrew Browser to get many popular apps, but this is an online only application (http://www.completesoftmodguide.tk/how-to-use/hbb)
* For those without internet, check out this list of Homebrew applications (wiibrew.org/wiki/List_of_all_homebrew).
Another great resource is webrewwii.blogspot.com

After getting whatever apps you want, you should get a boot.dol file and possibly a icon.png and meta.xml.
For HBC to read your SD/USB correctly, your card must be structured SD:/apps/application name/boot.dol
If you have a *.dol not named boot.dol, rename it boot.dol, otherwise it will not be recognized by the HBC.
(optional: the icon.png and meta.xml should be saved in the same place as the boot.dol)

For playing your backups off a USB hard drive, run the USB-Loader Setup options from NUS Auto Downloader's Main Menu

Thank you XFlak, but I'm already running on 4.2E
wink.gif

About Priiloader
Thank you for your massive help
wink.gif
I'll give priiloader a try right now (removed StartPatch) and report back ASAP.

About Gecko OS
Do you guys have some kinda guide for this Gecko OS?

@bwillb: so games DO need updates sometimes? (I was topld the opposite in post #2)

Thank you guys
wink.gif

I'll report back as soon as I can

[edit I]
Tried Priiloader, installed it but can't get the motherfucker to work... Once I open it from the HBC I get a disclaimer screen where I can do three things: "+" to install, "-" to unistall, "B" to use cIOS (IOS 249). Tried the last one but nothing happens. Thinking about unistalling it...

[edit II]
Unistalled Priiloader, put back StartPatch, applied block patch, did the Gecko OS thing and...

IT FUCKING WORKED!!!

Thank you guys!!! I owe you all the fun I'm gonna have with this game!
Thank you for walking such a noob like me through these steps... THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU
(btw this came in handy for Gecko http://www.wiihacks.com/other-faq-guides-t...o-os-1-07b.html )

[edit III]
If you guys don't have any objection, I would go ahead and change the thread title to "Updating a softmodded wii to play non-backup games" as I feel it reflects more of what's been talked about... Big thanks once again
wink.gif

[edit IV]
Well looks like somebody else has gotta do it for me as I can't seem to be able to change the title of the thread...

they can require updated IOS files and the like, but not a full system update.

as for priiloader, the app in HBC is just an installer. to actually access it after you install it, you hold down the RESET button while you are rebooting the Wii.
