I'm thinking of buying an Xbox right now but will it be a good choice to buy a Modded/Banned one?
as far as I know if tis already updated you8 can't softmod it anymore right?
So even if I buy a new one I won't be able to softmod it or its not updated so I will be able to do it?
also if I buy one will be easy to update it or stuffs like that? or will it be too hard for someone who doesn't know anything about xbox?
and the last question...can you also play games with external hard drive or only discs?
Help pleasee

If by softmod you mean JTAG then yes updates remove the ability to do it with existing hacks and new ones are not anticipated any time soon. You can always flash the DVD drive though whatever the update.

Dual layer disc only unless you have a JTAG hacked box in which case you can use a hard drive (internal or external).

Obviously a banned one will not play online but if you only want offline games (there are loads of great ones) and system link games then have at it. ( http://www.co-optimus.com/system/1/xbox_360.html has a nice list of such things you can start off with). If it is banned the chances are it is already modded (do ask though)- I suggest ixtreme 1.6NS if you are rocking a banned 360 but we can go into more detail there as and when. On another note while you can dump the drive keys yourself ask if the seller has them as it will save a bit of annoyance.

Yea I just want an xbox to play the games offline. And if I wana play some games online I'll just buy it for ps3.
What do you mean by JTAG hacked box? What is that?if I don't have that I will only be able to play games by dual layer disc and not by external hard drive?

The DVD authentication is done at the drive level so the the usual/most common hack is to dump the required keys from a drive and use them in creation of a hacked firmware for said drive which is flashed back. Games (and only disc based games can be used) have to be 1:1 copies (or effectively 1:1 as far as the 360 is concerned) which means dual layer discs. Scene releases are geared towards this side of things.

JTAG comes from the debugging method used by some electronics (including the 360), long story short it was blocked in the 11th of August 2009 update and in consoles made after about the 15th of June 2009.
It allows pretty much total control over the 360 including the ability to run XBLA, DLC and content from assorted hard drives (USB or onboard).

Sorry I should know better than to try and summarise the entire state of the 360 in two short paragraphs.

Barring the new slim 360 (which is still unknown but appears to be a new firmware revision and likely a block on current hacks) all 360 dvd drives can be hacked, some of the later ones are quite troublesome to hack but if you buy a prehacked one you should either be able to dump the keys easily or get them with it (personally I would ask for the keys/dumps to be emailed over) in which case the "hard" work was already done not to mention once you move to 1.6NS you will hopefully never have to change it again.

DL DVD- I usually settle for verbatim (no such thing as DVD-R DL). Amazon do fairly well on spindles and if you do it will probably clock you just over $1 USD a disc which is a fortune compared to single layer discs I know but far better than it was.

How to tell for JTAG- August the 11th 2009 update did block it and that is assured but with the exceptions of boxes manufactured from around June 15th onwards and those returned to repair shops on a similar timeframe the only real way is to dump the NAND and check with that:
http://docs.google.com/View?id=dnfmv5h_186pp2zddm (also has a few more basic checks)

I will note that the vast majority of banned consoles would have been hit in the last banwave (late last year) which will mean they will have already been updated- Live requires the latest firmware to be installed.

Small correction, DVD-R Dual Layer does exist. Stick with DVD+R Double Layer though, -R have a fixed layer break, and so the first layer needs to be completely filled. Useless for the 360.

If the console is banned anyway and you have an older drive then you can use the old extreme firmware that allowed the use of single layer discs (for games that will fit).

Yes, £gbp. These are street prices, check ebay and I imagine they will be quite similar (maybe a little higher).

You can pickup a brand new arcade for ~£100 (£90 if you don't mind buying from tesco), so a banned box is of little value to a lot of people. Plus you can pickup a 360 from cash convertors/other pawn shops for £60-£70, which comes with a 30day guarantee in case it is banned.

Best bet is to JTAG it if you have an exploitable kernel.

£10-£50 seems to be the going rate. £25 is around what most people tell me they've paid.
thats cheap
rolleyes.gif

everyone in here is asking around $100.
anyway, so lets say i find one that is Jtag-able. will it be easy to jtag it?
and I forgot to ask the most important one, is there a way to tell if it had RROD on the system?

P.S. FAST6191 you are the BEST

No it isn't for RROD consoles - it's for working console/pad/psu/video cable. Of course no accessories or games. original games cost money, pirate games are illegal. RROD consoles are £0-£25 generally.

The £97 is an elite, not an arcade. Still way overpriced though - £108 all in from ebay or get one from a pawn shop/game/hmv for ~same and it will have a guarantee. ebay idiots are idiots though, happy to be ripped off.

C175R - very easy, just a case of soldering a few wires, reading NAND, modifying it and then writing it back.

Did you actually look at the listing?

It comes with 15x pirate games (street price of £3-£5 each) and a hard drive (a few ££).

I can buy up £25 banned consoles all day long and burn 10 games off and sell it on for £75. But then I'm not parasite, pirate scum, making money off the hard work of others.

My prices are for console, psu and video cable. My prices are what people pay on the streets, people I come into contact with due to spending years in the mod business.

You wanna charge over the odds (prolly by including pirate games, as in the listing) then fine - but don't try justifying that it is the going price. You can pickup a brand new console for a little more than that - people are clearly buying it for the games!

So I found someone who will sell me a Jtag-able Xbox 360 with hdmi port for around 100 but no cables nor controller nor anything.
I think thats pretty cheap but is it really easy to Jtag an xbox?
can someone give me a link to a guide so I can see if I'm capable of doing that or not?
wacko.gif

also if its Jtag, does it play other region games or no xbox plays other region games no matter what?

http://docs.google.com/View?id=dnfmv5h_186pp2zddm is slightly older but replace XBR with freeboot and you are good to go.
Region free- yes but depending on how you do it it can be slightly tricky in as much as you might have to patch a XEX file (it should be automated now though if you rip a disc and GOD installs are not troubled by it at all) or have a region free patch added to the patch set of your rebooter. Pretty much if you know what you are doing and do it correct from the outset then it is no trouble at all.

$100 USD with no cables (no hard drive either?) is quite high (especially if it is an older model). I would opt more for $100 with cables, a 20 gig drive or on the other hand if it was already hacked.

RRoD boxes go for next to nothing though so you can usually scrounge a few cables from them (if not it is not like VGA or HDMI leads are expensive) and you can make a 360 power supply out of a PC one if you want as well:
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/mods/pc_powe...ly_xbox_360.htm (as a rough guide if making your own power supply bothers you JTAG will definitely bother you). Even the most greedy 360 supplies are just over 200W at the 360 side (probably double that at the wall) which can be sorted by just most PC power supplies out there. Falcon and down drop this requirement to 175W and 150W which is just about any pentium 2 and upwards.

re: price on other boxes I sense we are seeing the meeting of two worlds here- on the one hand if you already move in such circles you can probably pick such things up for the price of a round but on the other hand for the man on the street it will probably still cost you.

Well thats the lowest price I can find no matter where I look for a jtaged/jtagable xbox 360 with hdmi port on ebay and craiglist.
sad.gif

also while I was on craiglist I found some post of this dude saying

"Jtag Xbox 360 - $75 (Kendall)
Date: 2010-06-16, 6:00PM EDT
Reply to: [email protected] [Errors when replying to ads?]

This is for a USB SPI Adapter to JTAG a Xbox. Instead havving doing all the soldering and all that BS with a LPT Cable. now all you need to do is connect it to a USB. It does everything for you in matter of mins. This can be used on 100 diffrent xboxs so you can easily make your money back. "

is this true? cuz that would be much easier.
I wouldnt pay 75 for it tho.
