Hey guys, before I start, yes I have searched through the Hacking section, and read this thread thoroughly Softmod Thread

And I looked over the other sticky (* * * Wii Section Overview * * * READ BEFORE POSTING A THREAD) too but I didn't find an exact answer to my question.

This was a good thread as well WiiPower had some excellent tips, but I wanted to make sure I got the exact information I needed to do this.

What I want to do is this, only this and nothing else.

I just got my new US Black Wii (the sports resort / motion plus bundle) today and I want to be able to play my legit PAL copy of Disaster: Day of Crisis. That's it, I don't care to install anything to pirate anything on the system. The game already has 50-60 htz support to I'm good there, I just want to be able to play it without too much hassle, so I hope all I have to do is install a few things on the SD card and be done with it.

With that out of the way, can anyone tell me specifically what I'll (to do only this) need to do exactly what I want without bricking my system the first few days I own it.

And point me in the direction of those things if they aren't located in the softmod thread. Thanks.

I'm not sure if GeckoOS works with the new D3-2 drives.

Also if you want to mod it, follow the stickies!

Use Gecko OS or TinyLoad to load an out-of-region game.

Alternatively, you could patch your System Menu with Priiloader or StartPatch (I'd advise Priiloader if you want to go for one of these for the slight brick protection it gives) and have region-free from the disk channel, but then make sure to block disk updates or you could get a semi-brick from an out-of-region update.

EDIT: And all these should definitely work with all drives, because you're using an original disc.

Step 1: Use bannerbomb (http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/exploits/bannerbomb) to run the Hackmii installer (http://bootmii.org/download/). Install the homebrew channel and bootmii as an IOS.

Next step will depend on how you want to load out of region games.

- If you want to load them from the disc channel like all other games: Enable the Trucha bug (http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/hacking-guide/trucha) then install Priiloader (http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/system-hacks/priiloader). Once you have priiloader installed enable the region free hack and "block updates" hacks.

- If you want to load them from the homebrew channel: Place Gecko OS (http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/backup-launchers/disc/geckoos) on your SD-Card and load it from the homebrew channel. You'll be able to launch the game once the app loads up.

Thanks SifJar, I'll look into those in more depth than I did when I read the softmod sticky last week, I just wasn't sure what my best bet was when it came to doing this.

If anyone else has any helpful advice I'd appreciate it.

And as far as you other two gentlemen, I appreciate the attempts, but linuxares, I already mentioned in my post I didn't see anything specifically mentioning what I want to do (which is very little IMO) and they do more than I want and that's not what I'm interested in (installing Wads, homebrew, usb backup, ie, mostly piracy) I saw many things to do, but I wanted to know what exactly would get it done, without any major problems and without bricking my system 24 hours in.

And Wito...why post if you're just going to ask a redundant question? I've been on this board waaaay longer than you, so I don't see a reason to be less than polite (as many folks were in another recent thread I read today) and question my motives as to what I want to do with MY system, irregardless of your personal take on what I should or should not do with what I bought. I know some people couldn't conceive of not hacking it to do anything and everything, well I'm not one of them, I just want to play my copy of Disaster Day of Crisis I bought off of Ebay.uk. Pretty easy to understand, I would think, and no reason to get anyone perturbed over my descision, yes / no?

Edit: Thanks for the suggestion Fear the Tubes, I'll look into that too, I want to do it the easiest way possible. I'll look into what you and SifJar mentioned and see which one will work best for me.

We both suggested the same I just added a few extra suggestions

Quick summary of pros (and cons) of each method:

Gecko OS: Allows region-free loading, and cheats, but must be run from the Homebrew Channel (or a custom channel) each time you want to load a game, and is slower than TinyLoad (because it loads a menu for configuring stuff first)

TinyLoad: Region-free loading, auto-boots inserted disc (i.e. no menu, so faster than Gecko OS), but no cheats and still must be booted via HBC or a custom channel

Priiloader: Far more features than just region-free disc loading. Also allows blocking disc updates, moving disc channel, copying no-copy saves and a bunch of other System Menu hacks, as well as autobooting to HBC, BootMii/IOS or a .DOL file. Allows region-free from disc channel, and also offers limited brick protection (against bad custom channels and themes, nothing more), but does make a permanent modification to NAND, and is (minimally) risky to install (unless you lose power in the two seconds or so it takes to install, no brick can occur)

StartPatch: I would not advise this for you, as it permanently patches the System Menu, and if there is accidentally a bad patch in it, you could brick your Wii. Only really an option if you have BootMii/boot2 IMO, which your Wii is too new for I think.

Stop being so anal about "piracy"
You are asking for modifications to the Wii that will allow you to play out of region games. That, in itself, is already ilegal, sir. Stop saying piracy when someone suggests you install something that will let you do what you asked for.

In my oppinion, if you want minimal tweaking, install the Homebrew Channel (yes, you need to INSTALL THINGS, this is the necessary first step in every solution there is for your problem), install bootmii, then (I don't quite remember if you have to restore Trucha bug in order to install priiloader) install priiloader and in the hacks select "region free everything" and you're set to play every PAL game there is. You can uninstall the homebrew channel and you'll never have to go into priiloader again, so there will be no evidence of your "piracy" (btw, so far you haven't installed anything that will allow you to play backups, so chill)

Regarding bricks, if you follow the instructions in the sticky, or in any decent tutorial then you won't have problems (unless you are the unluckiest guy in the world and run out of power midway thru the installation of priiloader or something like that).

i also agree with simonarturo,
The only way your legit PAL game will play is if you install a hack. Period.
Simple answer to a simple question.
Next, please?

Making modifications to your wii is in no way illegal, what this dude wants to do is in no way illegal. What's illegal is DOWNLOADING games for FREE and playing. It's your console, you can do whatever modifications you want to it, it's not illegal.

that's hilarious
So, if I understood you right, whenever you buy a wii then you are actually buying permission to modify copirighted technology?
I don't know about yours but my wii sure as hell didn't say that anywhere in the box.

Nintendo can choose to void your warranty if they discover that you installed or modified your wii with the HbC, priiloader, etc. because they consider it a VIOLATION.

Voiding your warranty isn't illegal.

modifying intelectual property is

I really don't want to get into an argument with self appointed anti-piracy defendants that think the only way to pirate is by playing downloaded games.

If it makes you feel better, play your legally bought games in your modified wii.

Oh, the irony...

Please, don't hijack threads. Everyone of you is free to start another thread to discuss about piracy and legality, but this one is for helping the OP, not ethical discussions.

Thanks.

Yeah, its your property, your legally allowed to do whatever you want with it. Homebrew is NOT illegal, Piracy is.

Thanks for all your help SifJar, I got it working.

I used xzxero's guide and also followed complete softmod guide, and while clear, they could be a little more concise on certain things as I was taking little leaps of faith at certain times, but the system isn't bricked and I was playing Disaster: DoC from the Disc channel like it was a US store bought game.
yay.gif

I used the Priiloader (as per your sugesstion) which getting it all running was a little tricky since I was kinda using both guides at the same time to clarify questions I was having while doing it, but it worked nicely.

One final question if you don't mind, I can update the system (to go to the Wii Store) with no problems right? I updated earlier tonight, to see where some games I was interested in where and I just want to make sure I can update with no issues from here on in.

Thanks again for all of your help and advice, I really appreciate it. Cheers.

If you update the console through Nintendo you'll lose some of the functionality. For example updating the system menu would remove priiloader which would have to be re-installed afterwards. At this point no one knows what might or might not come in the next system update but it will likely be something to combat homebrew. Nintendo can't stop it all together but they can make it a big PITA to run homebrew and update officially.

Thankfully we have ways around all that.

You can use DOP IOS to easily keep your shop channel and other official Nintendo software up to date without worrying about it screwing up your softmod. I recommend using it to keep your shop channel/IOS files/etc up to date. You can also update your system menu with it if you'd like. Just remember not to update to the latest system menus until they've been tested in the wild though. At this point in time there is really no reason to update your system menu though. They haven't added any new features to it in a while and the last update was basically targeted at removing homebrew. Games don't care about what version of the system menu your running they only require a certain IOS to be installed.

what do you mean by "legit" software? if you mean only software licensed by nintendo, you wont be able to do it.

and just so you know, even though you can run tinyload or geckoOS through bannerbomb to play your game without ever installing anything, you still will void your warranty and leave proof of it. the mere act of opening up the game partition creates stuff on your nand that says "hey, i have run a game from a different region on this wii". since this stuff can only be put there by running homebrew, it is obvious that you have run unofficial software. nintendo can see this if you ever send in your wii for repairs.

so, it is pointless to try to jump through hoops and play this game with different chainloaders. a void warranty is the same weather you void it by using geckoOS or by installing cIOS, pirating 1000 wads and changing the region of your wii.
