Does the wii provide 500 ma when running a cios? usb 1.1 only gives 100ma.

USB 1.1 can give 500ma too. 100ma is the mininimum unit load on both standards (and any device can draw up to 5)

what do you mean?

we have had usb 2.0 stuff for nigh 8 years

Then more likely that big N foresaw no need for anything beyond USB 1.1 at launch and pushed out a subsequent update when they did have a need.
Nothing Nintendo does needs USB 2.0 even, anything using USB 2.0 isn't anything that's Nintendo official. They don't have an update for this. :wtf:

Yes there is; the My Shape camera uses an IOS that includes USB2 support, but it's only available on the disc.

Haha...emulating the Wii's NAND on a much bigger NAND. Like a NAND graft. Probably the closest one would get to actually soldering in a bigger NAND, the Wii wouldn't know what to do with it if you did. I think the hardware supports a smaller NAND though.

Then what fast USB 2.0 drive do you recommend? I would like to get the fastest the Wii can handle.

Thanks!
get a SSD and put it into an enclosure.

I wonder if that has anything to do with N's reluctance to put the IOS online yet. Doubtful, as only one game uses it so far, and...well...you have the disc, why would you need to download at this point? Or at all until they release a second version, for that matter.

how do i find out if my computer has 3.0 on it?

How old is your system, you would have had to buy a pretty nice Mobo purchased early this year to have 3.0 on board. I believe most of them are blue.

Oh, really? I hadn't known that, first I've heard of it. That's kind of interesting. Still though, nothing Nintendo is doing really needs it.

Nintendo made the system with USB2.0 ports and the capability to read SDHC cards. It's cheaper to make it with those parts, and they left a part in their DVD firmware to read normal DVDs. I'm sure they had them locked up for a reason.

In case they want to use it in the feature and to slow piracy down. It didn't help, but I'm sure that is what their goal was with the using USB1.1 since they didn't need to transfer more then what 1.1 could handle at that time. And since at the time before too, most people didn't need huge cards in the Wii because sava data is super small and pictures aren't too big either, most cameras take up to only 2gb. The DVD disc exploit in the DVD drive's firmware must've been in case they made a DVD channel in the future.

ya, but wondering how thats possible

i mean nintendo built a 1.1 usb controller

with some magic software it becomes 2.0

could someone explain to me how that happens and why it cant be the same for 3.0?

it is actually a 2.0 bus, but ninty only coded it to be a 1.1 bus, so through some hackz0rx, it is magically 2.0!
very successful!

Even without usb3 support in the wii, if your mobo has usb3 (or you have a usb3 pci card) then getting a usb3 drive makes sense. Top speed of a recent hard drive (recent as in this century) exceeds what usb2 can manage, so putting games on it via the pc can be a chore. usb3 will speed that up. And when drives get faster, put a new ne in the enclosure for even faster.

I haven't been gaming for such a long time. Been mostly busy with sleep, hardware tinkering and checking GBAtemp frequently.

Hope you've had a good morning.

It's going alright thanks :) I know what you mean with gaming time. It's precious where I can get it these days.

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
