GBA: ExtremeFlashAdvance II, cost me about $110

NDS: SuperCard DS One (I was an early adopter, no SDHC)

DS flashcarts were already out when I got the EFAII, but only the DS-Xtreme, NinjaDS and the Max Media Dock IIRC - I wanted a DS-X, glad I didn't buy one

One of those exact clone R4s with a 2GB Micro SD for about $20.00. Got it back in February 2009. Still have it and used it a few hours ago to play JWTB (I need new AKAIO!

GBA: Flash2Advance 32MB I think, I bought 2 cards and 1 cord for like $250. I KNOW!

DS: EZFlash4 ($70?), then upgraded toEZ5($30?), still don't have sdhc, but I rarely play my DS anymore

My first was the good ol' Acekard 2. I'm a bit of a novice, only being around for a year, but I'm glad I did some research and got a good card instead of falling for an R4 clone.

Honestly, I almost did buy one. But after stalking GBAtemp for awhile, your words of wisdom pointed me in the right direction.
