That's about all I get on mine over 802.11G.

that doesnt make sense, i mean g is 54 megaBITS per second which is about 5 megaBYTES a second

so why are we getting such a slow transfer rate?

Well.. it's certainly not falling over to 11mbit 802.11B. I suppose they just have a shitty network stack.. it was only ever designed for online play / updates.

so you're saying a homebrew app which is using the wii's notoriously slow wifi adapter only pulling 150kbps doesnt make sense?

You must be surprised and disappointed on a daily basis.

I'm actually surprised you get that much, i thought it's running at 1 MBit/s(~120 KB/s max). And i think it's all the wifi adapter's fault and the software is doing its best.

The cable adapter would still be quite slow because the Wii's usb ports are only 1.1 when using Nintendo's own IOS's afaik. So you will only get 12 Mbit max.

If you are transfering data to/from your SD card in the Wii it could also be your SD card that is slow.

Well from a marketing stand point it makes perfect sence, will you really need to stream more information than that when playing online? I doubt it, so they went with the old tek cause it is the cheapest tek (note the lack of an Ethernet plug, again cause most people don't use). I would not read too much into it really, now the real question should be wtf why not HD? The graphics are the bread and butter of games, since most developers have given up on making a decent story line, why would they short change themselves in this department?

But really I think the Wii is great for the price and the lack of HD is really not a biggie to me as I'm not one of those HD neophytes that thinks everything HAS TO BE in HD to be decent.

I completely agree with that sentiment. Two things though.

1. Graphics DO make a game more fun. You take the exact same game, same everything, same controls, same everything. But one copy uses some crappy engine that would barely push a ps2, the other pushes a ps3/360 to the max.. guess what - everyone will go for the HD one. Aesthetics DO sell.

2. Even if stable minded gamers do whole-heartedly believe gameplay > graphics, it doesn't change the fact the over whelming majority of gamers think the opposite and put a lot of weight on the graphics of a game. That mindless zerg of people caused early Wii games to fail. Like a snowball going down hill, serious publishers and games said fuck the Wii, we'll produce for the console that we know we can push units on. The Wii gets less and less games, the games it does get (sans nintendo) sell worse and worse.

Nintendo put a lot of weight in their new control scheme and it being a family console. And props to them, they've sold a shit ton. But, it is NOT the hardcore gaming console. It's the im-waiting-on-the-next-nintendo-title console - and i want to be disappointed by 3rd party shit like final fantasy fucked up chronicles.

If i heard Nintendo went the route of Sega and decided to just be a software publisher, my god would I be happy. I don't own nintendo hardware for the hardware, I own it for the 1 title a year worth grabbing.. sad but true.

And I hate having to qualify anything I say, as console fanboy wars are so gay. But I sat in a walmart for 12 hours 11/18/06 waiting on that midnight launch. That same wii was just playing SMG2 earlier. I'm not hating on the Wii, just stating what I believe to be "facts."

I completely agree that gameplay is the bread and butter of GOOD games, but in reality how many really good games are out there? To me the gaming industry has fallen victim to the same fallacy as the movie industry, better graphical effects = a better movie/game. My statement is more in line with the reality of gaming industry and not what real gamers like.

My best example of this is the Final Fantasy series. I personally think Final Fantasy III was/is the best game I have ever played. The story was huge and expansive, it also kept you wanting to come back for more like a good book. The game industry really hung a left to me when they moved in the newer FF games, the stories really became crap in comparison and they completely ruined the games with needless addons (in-game trading card games anyone?).

In closing I just want to reiterate, I think gameplay (story lines, controllability, player engulfment, re-playability, etc. ) is very important in a game but then again I think honesty is important in a politician. I won't hold my breath for either in today's market.

exactly gameplay seems to have taken a back seat these days and all they seem to want to make is fucking boring, generic shooters which i'm sick and tired of!

No, and this is probably the best answer

Every gaming console, makes their systems and its the cheapest hardware and spacing to fit inside a console. So a video game company, Nintendo isnt going to put in a fast wireless device, since its extra cost to them and your never going to use a rate that high.

Your Wireless Router (the one you have to your computer) is a fast device, 54mbps example, but the receiver Wireless Adapter/Card can be limited.

And I dont think Nintendo expected users to use ftp and transfer large files :-)
