/flame shield, I have read about this and can't get anything to work.

I have read about this being a game that is near impossible to get to work. I just hacked my Wii a few days ago with the HBC, some IOS's and cIOS's, etc. I downloaded a Red Steel rom, and it doesn't work. It is already scrubbed, I am burning it at 3x to a DVD-R (3x is the slowest my usb burner supports... my internal is dead). A clean burn hangs at "Licensed by Nintendo". Using IOSPatcher to IOS30, it goes to "Licensed By Nintendo", then flashes green and reboots my Wii. Patching to IOS249 made NeoGamma show Disk Error 1224. Running 4.2U, if you need anything else about my Wii (chances are you will), let me know (and most likely how to find out... I am very new to this).

But, if someone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it =)

Thanks

Why did you try to patch it to use IOS30? Does your IOS30 read DVD-Rs?

Anyways, there are at least 4 ways to get the game to work from disc on softmodded Wiis:
1. Use alt .dol disc+. (NeoGamma R8 + correct options + correct files on sd)
2. Use alt .dol disc (any recent disc loader)
3. Patch the disc to use IOS249 before burning
4. Install cIOS9 from cioscorp

I prefer #1. And #1 and #2 work on usb as well.

Pardon my being a noob... but thank you very much for even replying to me

Why did I patch to IOS30? Because I read from the site that I downloaded IOSPatcher that if a game doesn't work, try IOS30 (I don't think I can link to the site though because they have cIOS's for download)

to your options...
1) alt .dol on my SD? I have NeoGamma r8 beta 7. What are the correct options and files on my SD?
2) tried SoftChip and it doesn't read from the burned disks at all (I burned a few red steel disks using different IOS's)
3) Tried that (IOS249) and NeoGamma gave Disk Error 1224. Should I reburn it?
4) what does cIOS9 do? I was told (by the same website where I got IOSPatcher) to avoid cIOSCorp unless I want bricks down the road... something I would obviously like to avoid.

Once again, thank you very much for your help thus far and I hope you can continue to aid me =)

The game crashes because it suddenly can't read the disc anymore. The game has 2 .dols, and at the point where it crashes for you, the 2nd is loaded. The problem is that loading a .dol involves an IOS Reload in regular nintendo software. And if the game does an IOS Reload, it loads the IOS that is specifed in the tmd of the game disc. The IOS Version patcher patches the tmd to the IOS you tell it to. So if you patch it to use IOS30, the game loads IOS30 when loading the 2nd .dol, and since your IOS30 is an IOS and not a cIOS, the game can't read the disc. Normally the game uses IOS9, that's why replacing IOS9 with a cIOS also works for loading from disc.

About alternative .dol loading, read some threads here, SoftChip can't do it. And NeoGamma betas can't do alt .dol disc+.

I understand alternative .dol loading a tiny bit, didn't know that SoftChip can't (I actually just figured out how to change what IOS it uses... that fixed the disk read error I was getting).

what I'm not understanding though is what you mean by disc+?

So I guess... that limits it to either which NeoGamma should I use? (Rather, I suppose I would just use one of the NeoGamma RC's? RC3 I am supposing...) or would installing cIOS9 be a better option? Since IOS9 is something used by disks normally, would that mean I would run into some degree of trouble down the line if I had to do an update then?

WiiPower thank you very much for your help thus far, I really appreciate it.

EDIT - by the way I thought I should add, I reburned the image patched to IOS249 and NeoGamma does read it now (as in no more error 1224). It still hangs/reboots depending on what I have set for hook type, though there are I think 2 hook types that progress past "Licensed by Nintendo" to just saying "There was an error with the disk and it can no longer be read. Please reference your Wii instruction manual for troubleshooting tips" or something along those lines.

Currently using a disk patched to IOS249

Moving a tiny bit in the right direction... I got NeoGamma R8 (and a forwarder, not that that matters).

So I understand what you're saying about IOS30 not working because it is an IOS and not a cIOS. How changing IOS9 to cIOS makes some sense to me, but if I need to do a Nintendo System Update in the future will that cause an issue (major issue such as a brick).

With NeoGamma R8, I am still not 100% sure what settings I need to use. I have the REDE41.dol on my \NeoGamma folder on my SD. So I go into NeoGamma config, and I (currently) have:
Hook type - none
Ocarina on - no
Debugger - no
Altern. .dol - Disc+ (do I need to use "Disc+ only"?)
Search patches - no
Storage Device - SD using cIOS
Gamecube Mode - MIOS
Save Config - yes

now I am figuring that Ocarina does not need to be on, I have read nmothing about it being required for this game; same for debugger; Not sure what I need to be using for the Alt .dol method; no patches because when it is on it says no patches found; Storage device... maybe this is whats getting me?

cIOS's are the most confusing thing to me right now. IOS249 (rev 14) (which I have) is just an IOS, not a cIOS, right? If so, that would mean that I need to install a cIOS, no? (unsure if I have one installed... how would I check?) So... if you say to use cIOS9 from cIOSCorp, is that only able to be installed to where IOS9 is, or could I screw up and install it elsewhere?

What do you suppose I should do? :x

Alt .dol from storage will read the file from NeoGamma/%discid%.dol
Alt .dol from disc will show a menu in NeoGamma to select which of the .dols that are on the disc to load
Alt .dol from disc+ requires a .wdm file in the correct folder

IOS249 is a cIOS, so you won't need to change anything about that. I think you have all bad burns and your patched to use ISO249 disc would be fine. Use high quality media and at least 4x burning speed only.

Maybe it is just a ton of bad disks? They're branded NX^2 (NexxTech). I have never heard of them but theyre the only DVD-R's that I have. OTherwise, 4 Memorex DVD+R's, and I know I would need to booktype them to DVD-ROM.

Regardless, one last tidbit, if you have any last input on this, before I burn a few more disks - if I choose Alt .dol from disc setting, it gives me the 2 .dols - main.dol and redsteel.dol. Running main.dol loads the disk, hangs at "Licensed by Nintendo", then the top half flashes green and reboots the wii. However, if I run redsteel.dol off of the disk, it says "Disk Read Error (806)", then goes past that and completely hangs on a screen that says "Starting game". It goes no further than that.

I can't find anything on what the 806 error means, but maybe it's because of a bad disk? :wtf: (Patched to IOS249, burned on one of the NX^2 disks at 3x speed)

Regardless of whether you reply to that last post or not, thank you very much for your help WiiPower, I REALLY appreciate it =)

If you really burn at 3x, i know why you only have coasters. Use 4x, 8x, 12x or 16x only. 3x is not a DVD write speed, 2x is DVD-R only, 2.4 is DVD+R only and 1x is not compatible to most recent DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs. Burning slow is something that was required in the past, but now you need to burn fast to get good results.

And loading the redsteel.dol directly should work on ALL of your discs. If you get a read error there with the unpatched disc, i know why you get a read error with your IOS249 patched disc directly after booting it.

What would be the issue you suppose then? I just burned a new disk patched to IOS249, booted redsteel.dol off of the disk, and it still said "DVD Read Error (806)" then switched to "loading .dol", then hangs at "Starting game...'
