Whether that's a major ISP making a stand against the DEB or just a cynical attempt to grab more customers in the year before it comes into effect is anyone's guess.

To be honest, that seems like an attempt to woo new customers. As I cannot see any ISP wasting money defending customers when push comes to shove. ( More money going out than there is coming in does not make any economic sense )

It doesn't take a law to pass so that you can get caught, it just makes it easier, an American women got arrested because her son downloaded about 100 songs from a torrent site, and when she went to court they shut down her internet by her name until she could pay 3000 dollars for each song the son downloaded, sounds to me like the judge had a personal issue with music down loaders.

(The number of songs the kid downloaded is inaccurate, this is a story I read last year)

EDIT: Ok, it was 24 songs, and she has to pay $80,000 per song... So the judge really does have personal issues..

I dont understand this so does this Mean People who Pirate DS MP3 Videos ISO etc on a UK Website/server or that Pirates in UK will be Disconnected from the Internet and will be Force to pay?

Some of the highlights of my BT account -

Pay for 8Mb connection but only get 1.6Mb
5Gb per month download limit. Go over that and have to pay additional fees.
P2P throttling all day except a few hours in the early hours of the morning when nobody is awake anyway.

I may seriously look into this TalkTalk malarkey.

i don't know about the UK law, but french version made its way thought this "problem". You are not accused of having downloaded something, but to have let someone (you or anyone else) use your connection for an illegal download.

Was with TT years ago but for one reason or another the missus switched to BT.

1: Pay for 8mb, get around 6
2: Unlimited downloads p/m, but I think they reduce your speed when you either go over 80 or 100gb, and they also charge for every gb I think
3: I really can't complain about the speeds to be honest. I have a lappy that I use to download 24/7 and have found that some evenings between 5pm and 7pm the speed drops a tad, but nothing major.

Gosh. This is pretty nuts. I never thought something as outlandish as this would pass. Kicking someone in the can for having people pirate with their connection? Not cool.

Well, doesn't bother me any. Unless the US of A follows suite with this.

well they first have to see you actually have copyrighted stuff, then they will send letters, if nothing after the 3rd response either reduced connection or termination, and or prosecution from rights holders.

I dont know how they will police this TBH unsecure trafic yes but encrypted I don't know, if they try to see by how much you download then at the time I used to work in the sector they had to use a service called a woosh test, that would test the telephone line right up until the master socket, it wouyld also display hwo much traffic you have downloaded, but this procedure is accurate but it is costly and not practical, the woosh test can sometimes interupt the tel line.

I guess MI5 will have a new job trying to break the enryption when people start using or VPN

I think the head of TalkTalk is pretty brave and his actions and knowledge so far deserve much praise (remember that wifi hacking demonstration he did for the press?), only issue is their 50gig monthly cap [correct me if this has increased....] as I go through that in a few hours!

If this bill goes through, the pass rates at university level, and beyond will drop right down too....

I'm curious,
I have newsgroups access with 256-bit SSL encryption and from my understanding means that as I download the internet my ISP just "sees" me downloading random data. Could be a game, could be streaming netflix. Is this correct or is the ISP able to see where I am pulling this data from? I mean if I am downloading from alt.binaries.fake.piracystuff can they see I am downloading from there but not sure WHAT I am downloading? I'm guessing not because that would/could be enough to suggest a warrant. Anyone know for sure what the ISP sees when your on SSL?

And now the question is how long until it becomes illegal to use an encrypted line?

They can see that you're grabbing data from a particular server but as far as I'm aware it just looks like data. I'm not sure if they can see which newsgroup you're downloading from. The bill declares that the onus is on the copyright holder to prove that you've been copying their stuff before an investigation can begin. As copyright holders can't intercept your data without a tap/intercept then using newsgroups is safe. The amount of data you grab isn't sufficient evidence to prove piracy.
