I have the M3 ds real perfect bundle with the GBA cart running sakura 1.45. the GBA pack has been great at running most of my GBA games, except for pokemon... now i understand there are versions of the GBA pack that do not contain a clock, which pokemon requires. however, the cart i have claims to have a "real time clock" and looks to have a battery as part of its circuit board. yet when i go to save the game (pokemon sapphire and other GBA pokemon games) it gives me the message "save failed. checking backup memory. please wait." after a minute it changes to: "the backup memory is damaged or the internal battery has run dry. the game can be played. however, progress cannot be saved." when i hit A it tells me my game can't be continued and restarts. that sounds to me like it's having problems with the internal clock or something, but i'm confused considering my GBA cart seems to have a clock in it. any help or suggestions as to what to do would be greatly appreciated.

That does not sound like a clock problem (plus, the patch is either not needed, or auto-applied by Sakura, I can run emerald with the clock).
The message sounds like a save problem. Recharge the m3 gba pack's battery by leaving it in the ds while charging overnight (I've heard that fixes a lot of saving problems).

I have never had any problems with the gba exp. possibly becaus it is always in my ds so the battery has always got power.
btw. do you play a guitar game or any other game with a gba slot device? cos those could corrupt your save file aswell.

it didn't seem to be any problem with the battery on the card, i charged it up but that didn't seem to fix it. i think i figured it out tho. before loading the game i went into options. i noticed that "real-time save" was defaulted to off. i turned that on and the game saved after i loaded it! though experimentation with that and other pokemon GBA games i found that i seem to need real-time save set to on and the game set to "patch load" as opposed to "fast load"

Can I hijack this thread?
I am a total noob to ds stuff,, I have hacked the hell out of my Wii, but ds not so much.
My daughter wants me to put her pokemon ruby gba game on her m3ds real. But after some reading I find out that I need a GBA expansion thing.

Which GBA expansion pack is the best, and what are some differences in them?

Thanks so much.

For use with the M3 DS Real I definitely recommend the M3 GBA expansion pack. GBA games can be conveniently loaded from the Sakura or Touchpod interface. Also, Pokemon plays without any problems on it as it has a real time clock. If you were to use a GBA expansion from any other card manufacturer, you would need (a patched version of) Rudolph's GBA ExpLoader, which is not the best configuration for a newbie.

You have to load your game with patch load an if it doesnt work erase your save and download a clean copy
