I'm pretty sure that the PS3 cannot be modded to play games illegally as of now.

Regarding blue ray, if money's an issue I don't see any reason for you to get one. It really isn't THAT big a deal IMO (by that I mean I wouldn't buy the ps3 solely for blue ray, or any other device for that matter at this point in time).

I'll let those that own a PS3 to answer your other questions.

If you would be able to mod your PS3, you would need a proper good internet connection, and about 1TB hard drive to store the games.
Plus you would need to buy bluray discs, there is no point in modding the PS3 tbh.

for modding, a wii is the best choice, for games a ps3 is the best choice (not for price though as both 360 and wii can be modded to play pirate games) and but online (only just) i recommend a 360 (even though you still have to pa £40 a year for it though)

I don't know why people still think Blu-ray writers and discs are expensive.

The only scenario modding PS3 would be not cost efficient would be:
1.Buy a Blu-ray writer and buncha Blu-ray discs.
2.Burn 2 games. Play them.
3.Never use that Blu-ray writer again for the rest of your life.

Otherwise getting a Blu-ray writer and good discs are totally worth (burn 4 games and your PS3 practically came for free) if under the condition that PS3 is hackable.

Just so other people know and don't miss read the above quoted text ....

THE PS3 IS NOT HACKABLE AND HAS NOT BEEN HACKED FOR PS3 GAMES..BUYING A BLURAY BURNER WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO PLAY PS3 BACKUPS!!!!

that is all!

caps rant off!

Actually downloading PS3 game images shouldn't be an issue if one can afford to download 360 images.

Because there's no difference in read speed between the inner and outer layer of BD unlike DVDs,
BD images contain no dummy so the PS3 version game image would be smaller than the 360 game images for A LOT of games.
(360 game images contain dummy so that the data get written to the outer layer and thus increase read speed.)

The size difference could be as extreme as this although this is a rare case.
The.King.of.Fighters.XII.PAL.XBOX360-DNL is 7.2GB archived
The_King_of_Fighters_XII_JPN_PS3-HR is 800MB archived
On the other hand you NEVER get a PS3 game that's 9 times larger than its 360 version because even DL-BD wouldn't be able to hold it.
edit: Added: the regions are different but KOF12 JPN X360 is region locked so for most people here comparing the size of that and KOF12 JPN PS3 wouldn't be of any use.

Even for PS3 exclusive games, only a handful are over 20GB.

People pirated Lost Odyssey which is 4 discs of DL-DVD full with dummies so back to my main point, downloading PS3 images and 360 images in the long run make no difference in the amount of data you download per game and naturally the time it takes to download each game.

Why does everyone focus on a PS3 hack solely being used for PS3 games? If the PS3 was hacked so that it had a PS2 ISO loader and the PS2 games could be stored on it's HDD or a USB HDD, and launched as per HDL, i'd buy a PS3 with little hesitation. PS3 backups themselves don't interest me because of the sizes of games and hardware involved...for the effort i'd rather just rent them before i buy.

Now that's what I'm talking about. While I already have a PS3, I would be ecstatic to have a PS2 loader (seeing as I am one of those without BC).

Well I have a PS1 2 and 3 and I say the playstation 3 is worth the money. The new PS3 has a 120GB harddisk, dualshock 3 controllers, blu-ray, and it's only €299 here in Europe. I own 18 games and every single one of them was worth the money... And there are coming more great titles on the PS3, like COD 4 2, Assassin's Creed II, Uncharted 2...
So I think you should buy the PS3.

Personally when I pirate games the size or the number of discs doesn't matter to me, I still save $50 by downloading 30GB (counting hash-failed data or par2 files depending on where you download games) and burning 4 discs to play Lost Odyssey.

Can't understand why a couple games out of hundreds would be such a deal breaker.

I know I can wait over a week after the release date for my Japanese PS3 FFXIII copy to arrive in Canada, so I can wait a week (well, 50GB only takes a day or two to download) for my game to finish downloading.

If I REALLY can't wait I'd just go out and buy it knowing that I saved thousands of dollars from other games already.

True but I've downloaded hundreds of GB via Torrents and they're reasonably fast.

MGS4 is like $30 brand new at most major electronics/game store around here so if 50GB is too much then you can just go out buy a used copy of MGS4 and download a dozen PS3 games that sum up to 50GB instead.

Here's my math.
Downloading a dozen PS3 games that sum up to 50GB = ~$600 saved + you get to play a dozen games
Downloading MGS4 = ~$25 saved + you get to play MGS4
Buying MGS4 and downloading a dozen PS3 games that sum up to 50GB = ~$570 saved + you get to play a dozen games + you get to play MGS4.

Although I'm willing to wait for however long that 50GB will finish downloading @ 150kb/s if it means saving money.

Juuuuuuust wishing that it can be modded =P
