Quick question: is there any way to use one of the gamecube backup launchers to save gamecube save files on the sd card or internal memory? As in, not use a gamecube memory card?

Thanks!

Heya,

I have a quick question.

What is the difference between a Stubbed IOS and a IOS (correctly installed)?

Thanks!

Adr990

To my knowledge, the main difference is that you can't run any code from a stubbed IOS (homebrew, etc.), including the System Menu (that's why there are so many bricks by installing a stubbed version of the IOS 60 [v6400, to be exact]). Obviously, you can do this when using a functional IOS. For example, you can test this by loading WAD Manager under stubs IOS like 4, 10 of those ones from the new 4.2 update (222, 223, 249 and 250). The WiiMote will stop working and there won't be any other solution than hard reset the Wii.

It's been ages since I used my wii (no pun intended), so I have forgotten all that I once new about haxx and stuff like that.

My wii is currently 3.2E (It's PAL). My question is: What do I do in order to update it so that I can boot all games? I'm using a dc2key modchip. Please explain as straightforwardly and plainly as possible.

Greetings. I'm new here as you can probably tell. I need someone to simply confirm some information before i homebrew my Wii. I've been doing a lot of research into Wii Homebrew for the past week. I want to make sure i know what i'm doing before i actually do anything to my "virgin" 3.1U Wii, and i'm almost there. Don't worry, i've been following the many excellent guides on this website. I just need an expert to check my homework to make sure its ok!
tongue.gif

1) After the bannerbomb exploit runs the Hackmii installer. I should install Bootmii as boot2 (which should be easy on my 3.1U i assume). Making a backup of the Wii's system memory will make me 100% brick proof (Assuming i don't mess with any critical files, which i won't). Correct?

2) Since my Wii can't connect to the internet (probably never will). I'll need keep up with the latest retail releases without updating my firmware or using any of Nintendo's official updates. I should use NUS Downloader + WAD Manager or some other program capable of installing .wad files and install all the missing IOS files i don't have. This will allow me to play all the latest games but i won't be able to enjoy any of the channel updates until i update the system menu and all the related channels (I can't go online so i can't use them anyways). Correct?

That's pretty much it. I know many people in these types of communities find newbies irritating, so i did my research first before asking anything. A simple "Yes, that's right" or "No, you're wrong" will suffice. These are just some doubts i wanted to have cleared up before i did anything. Thanks in advance!

1. Exactly. Remember that when you restore a NAND backup, you'll literally "return" to the exact moment when you made it. As you might know, any progress/changes on the memory will be deleted/overwritten, such as channels installations, games save files and critical system files changes (like IOSs or the System Menu [the very own firmware, in other words]). So that's why is recommended to periodically make backups.

2. Nope. Every Wii channel, game or title executes themself under an specifical IOS. If you've got the IOS they use (which you can see with NUSD), you can update the channels by downloading their latest versions with NUSD and installing them with WAD Manager. The System Menu isn't really used by them at all.

I like to answer questions correctly and leave everything clear, so a "Yes, that's right" or "No, you're wrong" isn't enough for me.

Haven't you talked with teknical at #wiidev or #wiihelp, just to tell him the problem? That's very odd to me, indeed...

I have system version 4.2U.

Just tried to go to the Wii shop channel, and there is a notice saying that the shop channel has been updated, thus it won't let me shop until I do an update. I've looked around and haven't seen this problem mentioned anywhere, so either this is A BRAND SPANKING NEW update, or nobody has this problem. Any suggestions? As in, will this update remove my homebrew? Or is it safe?

It isn't safe, as it reinstalls most of the contents from the 4.2 update (including the stubbed IOSs), meaning that you'll lose again the cIOS from Waninkoko and Hermes, only if you had them installed. The only safe way to update the Shop Channel (and probably, the IOS 61, too) is by using WiiSCU v0.23.

Nope. I'm talking about IRC channels on EfNet.org.

Hey guys. I was once fully up to date on Wii homebrew, but I've stopped checking up. I'm on 4.0, running cIOS...v12 I think? USB Loader and a disc loader channel installed. No BootMii or Preloader.

I'd like to get up to date with 4.2 and the current version of cIOS, and maybe gain the ability to run burned GameCube games because I want to get some discontinued games like Donkey Konga (I have the bongos).

What do I need to do to upgrade? Thanks for the help!

I asked this in USB Loaders but I got not response and it may not even be the right place so I am going to repost here, apologies for doing so.

I am using USB Loader GX and trying to play Marvel Ultimate Alliance PAL, up until now all my PAL games work fine when forced to NTSC but this one gives me a grey screen. The game still loads as I can hear the intro and I can even hit the home button and navigate blindly to get back to the wii menu. If I load PAL I get the typical B/W screen and if I choose Autopatch I get color but it scrolls like an old TV with a messed up Horizontal hold. Any help is appreciated.

update, I have also tried configurable USB loader and get similar results, I feel like I tried every option but can't get it to work.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.

I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs

I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
