This patty number race reminds me of disposable razors and their increasing number of blades.

Well, this is nothing new really. Alot of burger places will make you a burger with however many patties you'd like.. you just have to ask!
For example, Wendy's here in Canada charge $1.00 per extra patty on any of their full sized burgers (ie. not the jr.'s). So you could get say, a Big Bacon Classic with 7 patties for a little less than ten dollars.
