i didn't use a nintendo update because the your guide said "It has also been recommended that you follow This Guide to upgrade your Wii system menu to either version 4.0 or 4.1 once you get HBC and BootMii installed. Thanks for the nice guide. =D" so thats what i'm trying to do. How would i know if i patched IOS60?

I posted the guide because it works if you follow the instructions. =)

If your Wii is still in working condition, grab an update from Nintendo and proceed with the rest of the guide.

having an odd issue can someone help me clear this up? I'm pretty sure the cIOS was not installed correctly because when I launch a title in Neogamma (Channel or thru HBC) it will read the title but it boots to a black screen and the drive makes clicking noises until I force the power off to the system.

I tried to go back and install an earlier cIOS (rev 7 I think..) and it failed with -2011 error if I remember correctly. Not sure what to do to fix it.

My friend wanted his console on 3.2U and since bannerbomb is out I used that instead of the twilight hack. The system came to me as a 3.4U. I ran bannerbomb, then the normal downgrade path of ios-16-v64-prod.wad/CIOS_fix.wad/IOS downgrader/cIOS downgrader to get to 3.2U (I used big moe's v2 package of apps). Then I installed the cIOS38rev14 and tried neogamma from HBC, no success. I figured it was because possibly somehow IOS36 was not trucha patched so I ran the Trucha Bug Restorer, but this was AFTER I already installed rev14 of cIOS38. I figure this doesnt matter since they are different slots.

Everything else works, bootmii was able to make a backup although it found nearly 11 bad blocks! Preloader works, hacks are installed, dvdX and rom loading from dvd-r is working. Everything but the damn backup loader works.

I patched ios51, 60/61, and installed ios38. The only other path I know to take is to upgrade to 4.0U and hope that I get the missing IOS (...I guess that's what the problem is???)

I've no idea if 3.4/3.2 has anything to do with it because no one uses it. Upgrade via Nintendo to get 4.1. Try again. Staying on an outdated SM is completely pointless.

don't I need to remove preloader though to do the nintendo update to 4.1? I don't mind updating them, I was just more comfortable with the method which I used to get to 3.2 but if its safe to go through N then i'll do that as long as it can't touch boot2 or screw up ios60 (b/c of preloader) and leave me f'd. this is my friends wii and its one of the launch consoles so I do not understand why there is a problem with it. I've not had this issue on any of the ones before so that's why I was just confused.

Since there is only a 4.1 upgrade available at the moment, and it doesn't hurt your Wii at all, a regular Nintendo update would be the easiest at the moment. Everything will still work after that. Once you get that then you can upgrade the cIOS and install PreLoader.

do i have to install c10s if ihave internet on wii and 4.1 v

if you want to use wad manager or backup launcher, then yes
but I would recommend it anyway

Hey,

Sorry if this has been asked already (25 pages is a lot to sift through), but if my wii is already hard modded with wii key 2 would it cause any problems if I try to soft mod it now? Are there any known issues with doing so, any specific things I should avoid?

Thanks

Deviyl,

I updated that wii to 4.1U and then re-did the guide steps and I am still having the same problem with loading discs. I get disc read errors (1101, 972) or timeout error when I try to load a game, it also makes my drive make weird clicking noises.

I googled those errors and found it was most of the time a media error but the games I am trying are the same ones that work fine on my wii. To be sure I found my very first backup game which was done at 1x or 2x speed and tried it, and it could not read it either. Original titles still work fine however.

what could be the issue? I ran TBR and installed the patched ios36 then came through and installed r14 CIOS to ios36 just as specified in the guide. I am not sure what/where I did something wrong.

No softmod would cause a hardware failure. If the drive is clicking, it could possibly be that the drive is simply going bad. If you followed the steps correctly, there is absolutely no reason the games should not work. And if you tried them on another Wii and they worked fine, you know the disk is good.

My little brothers-in-law have a Wii and they're only 5 and 8 years of age. They don't take care of stuff at all. And their Wii does something similar. It plays retail games fine (most of the time), but burned games gives it trouble. Every now and then if you clean the disk really well it will play it for a good 5 minutes or so and then error out. The lens is probably dirty, but I don't feel like messing with it because they have absolutely no respect for the things they have and it will just end up broken again. [/rant]

Anywho.. not to say your friend doesn't take care of his stuff, but maybe try to clean the lens or look for some of those lens fixing mods. Sounds like the Wii is hacked fine, but you can make sure by trying to load some games from USB and see if they work.

tried usb loader GX this morning and it loaded something off of my drive.

now to just figure out what the heck is wrong with the cd drive. hopefully a lens cleaner will do it I dont really want to open that thing up and replace a whole drive.

Problems with NAND backup. I start the homebrew channel and press the home key. It takes me where to start the BootMii. I click on BootMii and it goes to the second screen but my wiimote dies. No more access to the menu.

Do I need the GC controler for this? I thought it was not necessary with the BootMii 3

Also, PreLoader never goes to where I have to press 1 to continue. It gives me the warning message but stays there for ever. What do I do? I have no protection against Brick at all without NAND backup and witout PreLoader.....

Thanks

Same thing happens to me, and I just press 1 or some other button after a while and it installs without a problem.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
