you can always try to install StartPatch for the hacks, people say its better, although I couldn't install it myself due to some error I have not yet figured out.
As long as you have BootMii as boot2, you can try whatever you want: cIOSCORP for instance.

if you are on 4.1, the Wii Sports Resort update simply install IOS 55, that is required for some reason. And yes, you can first update via nintendo to 4.1 and then follow this guide (I did it myself).

starPatch you say. and this will have hacks available for my japanese wii?

and is starpatch basically the same as preloader ( what are the differences, if any?)

yes, there is a japanese version. the difference is "Because this wont let the disc spin forever in the the drive. However if you use Preloader for auto-booting to the HBC then sorry, this is for System Menu hacks only." Just get it from http://wiibrew.org/wiki/StartPatch and try it out.

hey there. i tried to install the starpatch thing on my wii but it wouldnt work,
it starts but then the last message i get is an error message at the end of:

getting file size.... error! -4

any ideas?????

Dear xzxero,
this is one of the best guides I have tried. Thank you for compiling it and for support and all your time and help.

I have some questions/suggestions.

I have noticed that quite a lot of people are asking about upgrade from different versions with different hack combinations already installed. You are suggesting virginization, but some of the people could feel uncomfortable to do that and rather start from already hacked console and continue with your guide and skip some of the steps. I know you say that this works for all system versions. But it would be probably useful for us noobs to include notice in the guide for different system versions with different hack combinations (for example:If you have Twilight+HBC start with step... and skip step...and then continue on ..., If you have Twilight+HBC+Bootmii_2...)

Is the Bootmii in your package beta2 or beta3?
There is issue with recovering NAND created with b3 version, although it recovers NAND created by b2 version. You can recover b3 created NAND backup only after you treat your b3 NAND with this tool or after replacing ppcboot.elf in b3 with alternative ppcboot.elf (you can read more here) and using it to create NAND backup (modified version with alt ppcboot can recover b3 NAND created after modification, but not the one created before modification).
Is your Bootmi package b2, b3 or b3 with alt ppcboot?
Which one would you recommend (b2 or alt modified b3)?
Sorry if this was already fixed in official release.

Is the Preloader in your package 0.29 final or beta?

To deal with the updates, maybe you can just include links and say: download the latest version of Preloader from here, Bootmi from here...instead of creating new package every time there is some new update.

I have here very old softmoded Wii with:

3.1U Twilight Hacked with The Homebrew Channel 1.0.3
* Custom IOS36 rev10
* Installed Bootmii Public Beta 2 as Boot2/latest NAND backup saved
* DVDx
* Starfall
* Several homebrew apps/USB loaders/Backup launchers

I'd like to upgrade to:
4.1U
* The Homebrew Channel 1.0.3
* Custom IOS38 rev 14
* Installed BootMii public beta 3 (?) as Boot2/lNAND backup saved
* DVDx
* Startpach 4.1
* Several homebrew apps/USB loaders/Backup launchers

My questions:

1. Where should I start in your guide and which steps should I run and which should I skip?
2. Is it possible to follow everything from start to the end and apply hacks on already hacked system without any harm and without prior virginizing the Wii? (could be useful to mention this in guide too).
3. Does 3.1U system require to insert Wainin's 4.0 upgrade in your guide before running 4.1 upgrade?
4. Since I have Bootmii installed as Boot2, I'd like to use Startpatch4.1 instead of Preloader0.29, do you think it is a good idea?

Thank you again for a great job and for your time.

Everything in this guide will overwrite anything anybody has done previously to their Wii.
There really is no need to have certain people start in certain places.
I mean, shouldn't people know what the f*ck their doing to their own Wii in the first place?
Anyways, the package includes bootmii v3 unmodified and preloader .29 final.
The precompiled link is no big deal, updates for the programs included dont come very often at all.
Since you have starfall, you must be on 3.2.
You can either update with Waninkoko's 4.0 updater then his 4.1 updater, or grab the system menu wad via NUSD as described in the offline section.
Your installed Bootmiiv2 should be no problem, i would leave it be,
You stated you have REV10 and would like to upgrade to REV14, simply running CIOS38 rev 14 installer will overwrite REV 10.
DVDX will remain intact, so that's nothing to worry about.
You can either use Startpatch or preloader .29 on 4.1, they accomplish the same thing. i recommend preloader obviously.
You homebrew apps and whatnot should still work fine.
As for your questions
1] from the beginning, everything previously done will be overwritten.
2] yes
3] no, but its recommended to run 4.0 1st then 4.1 because in some cases the IOS's won't properly update.
4] It's a good idea as you still have brick protection. the only things you'll lose is the ability to choose which IOS to load the system menu from, install a autobooting .dol file, choose what to start up to [hbc or system menu], and other minor things.

xzxero.

i noticed in your last quote that you recommend pre-loader, and to be honest preloader or startpatch either way doesn't bother me, as long as i can get some hacks.

i have a japanese wii (i live in japan). i followed your guide to the letter (great guide by the way. im not trying to blow smoke up your ass, but it was a really clear guide, much appreciated), all the way to installing preloader. only to find out that pre-loader doesnt have any hacks for a japanese console (correct me if i am wrong). So reading the forums, it seemed like my next best option was startpatch 4.1 as it has hacks for a japanese wii. the problem is i keep getting the same error when i try and install it (loading through hbc) "getting file size.... error: -4" and thats where it stops and goes back to hbc. any idea how I can get startpatch installed on my machine. ive posted a few times on the forum, and left comments/questions in threads, but im not getting anything. you seem to know your shit, and im hoping you can help me out.

anyway, hopefully hear from you soon

Dear xzxero,
Thank you very much for your fast reply.
So the massage for older softmodded consoles is: Whatever system version and whatever previous softmod and hacks you have, follow the guide without virginizing and you should be ok.
Instead of Starfall use Startpatch or even better Preloader.

For BootMii beta3 you can simply include modified ppcboot.elf in you package from the link I posted. Unmodified as I mentioned fails to recover its own NAND backup. There is also modified installer I can send you the link, but I have not tested it yet.

Thank you again and keep up the excellent work.

If you're on 3.2 you could skip all the Trucha Bug Restorer steps. You should have the trucha bug in all IOS's already, and if you installed a cIOS before (if you can play ANY backups at all through a backup loader), then you can have the rev14 installer use IOS249 to install. Otherwise any other 2 digit IOS or IOS36 as listed should work as well.

After you run the 4.1 updater though you should run dop-IOSv7 again and have that install the most recent IOS36 and have it patch the sig hash check and ES_Identify into it and then install preloader.

So basically,
install latest HBC/bootmii
make NAND backup
install cIOS rev14
dop-IOS IOS60 saying yes to everything
run 4.1 updater
dop-IOS IOS36 saying yes to everything
install preloader 0.29

Thanks for the fantastic guide. It looks clear enough that I think even I can do it!

I'm just about to start the steps to mod my virgin 3.4J Wii (Taiwan NTSC-J), brand new bought today!

But first can someone please help clarify this?

1. For my 3.4J Wii (Taiwan NTSC-J), should I be using the NUS Downloader to grab System Menu v448 (4.1J) instead? I should be using the J versions right?

2. And, if the above is correct, should I first upgrade from current 3.4J to 4.0J (SM v416) first, and then only 4.1J? Or can I go straight from 3.4J to 4.1J?

3. Is there a proper hacks.ini for this NTSC-J Wii? Or will the hacks.ini in the "mod.zip" folder work?

I know the guide says it works on ALL Wiis from ALL regions, but I'm getting confused as I also read that mixing system menus and stuff could be bad, and that there are new Wiis which can't be soft-modded?

Are there anything else specifically related to NTSC-J Wiis from Taiwan that I should be aware of before I start modding it. Has anyone done one, any warnings or problems to watch out for?

Please, please help me get this right.

Thanks!

*note: if using a pal wii, grab the proper hacks.ini and replace it with the hacks.ini in the "mod.zip" folder

navigate to system, system menu, choose v449 [v450 4.1e for pal users] and click start NUS Download.

One more question,

In the precompiled link that I downloaded, the boot.elf file is 1,434 KB

In the screenshot the boot.elf file is only 1,431 KB

Has something changed? Should I worry?

No, directly to 4.1 for offline guide. Update official if you use the online guide (before you start) and skip the Waninkoko updater step.

3. Is there a proper hacks.ini for this NTSC-J Wii? Or will the hacks.ini in the "mod.zip" folder work?
There is no hacks.ini for 4.1J, preloader will still work however.

This guide should be safe on the newest wiis.

Don't worry about that
Some things can indeed be corrected in his guide
I tried to take all errors out my soon to be released guide

TJ_Cool,

Thank you for the detailed answers. Just to get it straight, I WILL be using the Offline guide,
so I should update straight from current 3.4J to 4.1J (downloaded via NUSD and put on SD)

OK, gonna start soon...

So please correct me if I'm wrong but this is the sequence I am going to perform;

1. Prepare SD (not SDHC since I'm at 3.4J) with all the files as per guide but use "System Menu-NUS-v448.wad" (4.1J) instead.

2. Insert SD and install in sequence: HBC, DVDx and Bootmii, Trucha Bug Restorer, CIOSrev14, IOS60 (using DOP-IOSv7)

3. Run Wad Manager and install System Menu-NUS-v448.wad (41.J)

4. Run Preloader 0.29 (without hacks.ini)

DONE

Amirite?
tongue.gif

BTW, what would happen if I use System Menu-NUS-v449.wad instead?
Do I get English menu or a "very bad thing happens" instead?

Is there anyway to get this Taiwan NTSC-J Wii to display english menus?

Firstly, thanx xzxero for this guide.
wink2.gif

It worked great on my bro's v3.4U.
While i did it for him, i kept looking at my console (@v3.2U at the time) and thinking it's been a while since i'd done anything with it and being at v3.2, i was experiencing the odd glitch here & there with some games(with the USB loader GX and the disc channel respectively)...also wanted to try the SD slot's capabilities as well @ v4.

So decided to do mine next.

But along the way i've hit a few snags. At the time i was at v3.2U and in the past i remember doing some other hax such as Starfall, preloader, cioscorp etc...
I couldn't get your guide to work on mine so i considered following a guide to "virginize" my wii but decided to upgrade to v4.1 using Wan's updaters. (1st v4 then v4.1)
Needless to say by now, there have been countless revisions going on inside there...
unsure.gif

I began with your guide at this point. (Offline version btw)
I was able to get the NAND dumped.
But i am stuck at the next step:
Code:
Run Trucha Bug Restorer
Press B to choose No IOS Reload.
Wait till it says Press 1 then press it.
Go to Downgrade IOS15.
Press A to downgrade.
Everytime it says "load IOS from SD" press A.

So i did some more reading and decided to try to disable all hacks within the old installed Starfall.
Subsequently, it gave a warning that it only works with v289 and it discovered v449

Just wondering if anyone could chime in to help me take it from here.
Should i try to do the virginizing thing and start from scratch or is there another approach i'm missing
I'd like to feel comfortable that all is functioning well in the end.

TIA

4. Run Preloader 0.29 (without hacks.ini)

DONE

BTW, what would happen if I use System Menu-NUS-v449.wad instead?
Do I get English menu or a "very bad thing happens" instead?

Is there anyway to get this Taiwan NTSC-J Wii to display english menus?
Those steps should be correct
I have no idea what would happen if you installed another region actually
You can turn it in an english (U) wii with AnyRegionChanger (very dangerous app!)
