Hi, I followed the guide on the first page to the letter and have a problem: I got through installing preloader and through new cIOS install, but when that was done, I couldn't get back into my system menu. Preloader comes up every time I turn my Wii on, but when I tell it to go to the system menu I get garbled text that says "System Menu Files Corrupted, Ready through the Owners Manual Troubleshooting Section for Help", or something like that.

I started digging a bit more and found that preloader only works with system menus 3.2 and 4.0 (I had 3.4U before the whole process started). Is there a reason this was never mentioned in the guide? Could this be the root of my problem? I'm now in the process of doing the upgrade to menu 4.0 via the instructions listed at the top of the first post, but I'm not sure if this will fix my problem.

Everything seemed to go just fine, so I'm not sure where the problem lies. HBC and Preloader seem to work fine, I just can't get into system menu.

Suggestions are appreciated.

I have the same problem as you (only I have 3.4E). My post is a couple of posts above yours. If you manage to solve it, please post detailed instructions here.

When I installed PreLoader and tried to boot into system menu, I got just a black screen (rather that the system files corrupt message you get), but similarly the HBC and PreLoader would run OK and so would BootMii.

I then noticed that in settings for PreLoader my system menu wa set to IOS 30, so I swapped it to 60, saved my settings and then the system menu was fine.

I see one of you said that it said system menu IOS 50 - maybe swap it to 30 and give it a try if 60 diesn't exist?

Sorry I can't be of more help - I guess we should wait if that doesn't work for more experienced peeps to advise...

Good luck...

Well, I may have made _some_ progress. I just installed system menu v4.0U using the process detailed here and it worked like a charm. Only thing is, it seems to have erased preloader, because I can no longer get it to come up, even when I hold down reset while powering up the Wii (which I didn't have to do before). When powering up, it goes right to the system menu and HBC is still loaded and working.

I'm going to do a NAND backup from here (another one) and just start the process over from patching IOS36 onward. I hope I won't have to do that every time I need to upgrade firmware...

dunno if this helps. I wish there were a way to see which versions of each IOS file you have installed, because I'm starting to get really confused.

@arctic- You need to set up the network settings, get the wii to connect to your home network over WiFi and try again.
I do have the network set up but I still get the same results but when I start the top left corner of the homebrew shows my network ID after I run WAD Manager and restart Wii it sometimes shows network is not initialized. but only sometimes.

Does that link even work for PAL Wiis? Did it have a PAL option or does it only install the US firmware? Don't want to hardbrick my Wii.

And yes I think you must re-install PreLoader each time you update the firmware.

EDIT: I updated to 4.0E using that link and got it working. Had to re-install PreLoader and update the System IOS (in PreLoader settings) to 60 or I would get a black screen.

Preloader is not a must.
I know. =P I even stated that in the guide. But for people that have to install BootMii as boot2-- if they brick their Wii, there isn't another way to get to HBC without PreLoader, so they'd need it. But other than that, I pointed out that it's not necessary. But then.. if you're really feelin' lucky, you really don't need BootMii or a NAND backup either.

And why is that? If bootmii is installed as boot2 can't they just go to the gears and reload a backup?

he meant to say IOS instead of boot2

as for those getting sysmte menu corrupted messages, change the IOS the system menu loads up to 30, then back to 60.
you do this by starting up preloader [hold reset while powering wii] then go into the settings and make sure you save it after changing the settings.

preloader works with 4.0 and 4.1.

I followed the guide but had some problems installing the fw 4.1 upgrade with the guide provided as link. It failed on my already softmodded 3.4e system. Later on i saw this could be becouse u need to upgrade to 4.0 first.

Anyway's as it seems the fw update whas recommended and not required an some told me fw upgrade was an un needed even unwanted extra step i skipped it.

Everything installed correctly only after installing preloader i feared i had bricked my wii becouse i couldn't start my system menu anymore. After going in to settings menu of preloader and setting it to ios 249 it booted, later on i saw u sometimes have to switch and i switched back to ios 30 and my system menu works fine again.

So now everything seems to work ok, but is there an way to be shure, i checked in backup channel and there is listed 1.03 ios36 v 12.22. But when i start neogamma r7 it does state ios 38 r14 and the backup loader starts so i figure ios38r14 is installed ok.

My question is is there an way to check which ios are installed ?

Also do i still need to upgrade to 4.1.

And if so is it correct that my procedure would be.

Install fw 4.0 with the guide presented here
Then fw 4.1
Reinstall Preloader ?

I modded my Wii a while back using the Zelda Hack. Got Preloader 0.25 on and Nixxx USB loader.

Question:

Can I now upgrade to 0.29 safely?
Can I use BootMii with all this?
Basically, can I use this system as per guide to redo everything?
Should I update FW first before redoing any or all of those hacks?

Thanks

Backing up your NAND
This step is not mandantory, but will allow you to restore your Wii in case of a brick with future softmodding. It is highly recommended.

Things you'll need:
1) SD card from the previous step when you installed BootMii (will also need at least 528MB of free space on the card)
If you put the SD card back into your computer, there should now be a BootMii folder present on the root. This is the only folder you need to keep there at the moment if you're OCD.
2) A GameCube controller if you had to install BootMii as IOS (no longer required for BootMiiv3, but for anyone using v2 I'll leave this here)

Steps:
  • Put the SD card in your Wii. For folks that installed as boot2, just make sure the BootMii folder is on the root of your SD card and restart your Wii. Continue 4 steps down.
  • A HomeBrew channel should have appeared on the first page of your Wii channels. Start this channel.
  • Press the Home button on your Wii remote.
  • Press Launch BootMii.
  • Your Wii will restart to a new menu. This is BootMii.
You will need a GameCube controller to use this screen if you installed as IOS (BootMii v2 or lower). If you installed as boot2 or BootMii v3 or greater, you can use the buttons on your Wii (power = move, reset = select, and eject = eject) to navigate.
  • Go over to the little gears and press A.
  • Click on the icon with the arrow pointing from the chip to the SD card.
  • Follow the steps on the screen-- press start, then A to begin the dump.
  • This will take about 7-10 minutes depending on the speed of your SD card.
You now have a NAND backup of your Wii in case anything awful happens and you get a bricked Wii. Make a copy of this nand.bin and save it somewhere safe. You can remove it from your SD card as well, as you probably won't use it very often.
Note: If you need to restore your NAND, do the same thing to get to BootMii and options, but instead of clicking the icon with the picture of the chip to the SD card-- click the one with SD card to chip. Follow the instructions from there.

need help here. I install my bootmii as an IOS and not as boot2 (because it says cannot) everything work's just fine until i backup my nand, and when it verifying my backup, it freeze (the dot is not moving again) but the status for backup is OK (because it says Backup complete, verifying backup, press eject to skip). To recover my wii from freezing i need to unplug it. Is my backup process OK here? becoz when i try to restore my nand through bootmii, it says didnt found nand file in my sd press a+b+x+y to continue (but when i checked my sd, i found a file under the name "nand").

How to check if our backup process is fine and we can use this backup in the future if something worse happens?

sorry - I just followed this guide as it was last week and even though boot2 was not possible for me, I was surprised that the power and reset keys worked!

I did an official nintendo update prior to following this great guide due to the fact I had my Wii softmodded using SoftMii 2.1.1 from a while back. No problems, did the update then installed bootmii, hbc, made a nand backup, truch bug restorer (downgraded 15, patched 36 restored 15) then installed cIOS38rev14. All is well! I'm able to run USB loader, backup launcher everythings great. The only thing i'm having an issue with is getting VC games to work from the system menu.

I can install wiiware wads from Wad Manager 1.4 and they work great, but the VC games go to a black screen? I was able to run any VC or WiiWare channel with my old 3.2 setup but now only the VC games are not working. I read something about patching IOS60 although this might be outdated. When I use IOS60_Patcher or try to install IOS60patched.wad it corrupts the system menu. At that point I reinstall Preloader and it loads normal again. Still VC games won't load? Any advice? I'm almost there!

It's safer to first update your firmware to latest version (4.1) and then follow this guide, especially if you have 3.4 installed.

And as the guide says, this will work on ALL Wiis released so far.

Try with another SD card because yours may be broken. Or try again. Unless it has successfully verified the NAND backup, you can't be sure that it's OK.
