I've tried to make heads or tails, so apologies if I'm asking something that's been asked a thousand times before.

I've got a 3.3U Wii with Wiikey1 installed. I have the Homebrew channel installed (to access Virtual Games).

I'd like to play some of the newer games (like Punch Out) and use the USB loader.

The guides that are written are very clear, but I'm not sure whether the audience is softmod users or people with modchips (like the Wiikey).

Should I follow the steps in this guide?:
http://www.gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=144835

or is that overkill? Is there a guide for USB Loader as well? Found the site, but didn't find a guide to use.

Any help is *greatly* appreciated.

I wouldn't do everything in that guide. Honestly I would just make sure that I have cIOS installed, upgrade to 4.0, then run IOS Downgrader
And USB Loader you run just like an any other app that you run from the homebrew channel. Your usb device will have to be formatted to WBFS however.
You can also have a channel of it on the Wii System Menu

Hi, I'm trying to boot up SSB64 on my wii using WAD Installer v 2.1 (WAD Manager wan't working for some reason without the boot.dol file, so I switched to using the last version of the installer since the Win.rar file I got had a boot.dol file in it). However, there are a few problems I have... Every time I start the WAD installation, gives me this message:

[*] Mounting SD card... OK!
[*] Opening directory "wad"... OK!
[*] Opening "TITLE.WAD"... OK!
[*] Installing WAD...
- Installing Tickel (NAJ9)... Error! (ret = -2011)
[*] ERROR: Could not install WAD! (ret = -2011)

[*] Press the Reset or A button to return to the Wii Menu

Problem:
I don't exactly know how to interpret where I screwed up here. what does ret = -2011 mean exactly? How do I fix this?

You should install cIOS38rev13

More questions, proceeding from all I've written above. What happens if I want to play someting online?
Can I still do this?
What if I need an online update for a gameto play online?
Can I simply get it or will this screw everything up, do I need to apply the update through homebrew channel?
What's the best way to go about this?

USB Loader GX 1.0 block game updates?
Does it block all game updates and system updates or is the latter blocked by disabling wiiconnect24?
Basically, will GX 1.0 block absolutely everything or could I still get pop-ups here and there asking me to update?
How do i update if I need to, for a game, not system, and whats the best way to go about it?

You can play online
You shouldn't have to update to play online
USB Loader GX does skip updates
It blocks all the updates
lol at popups
If you are on 4.0 you won't need to update for any game

I'm on 3.3E, will I encounter any problems regarding updates?

Just at a glance the first one looks like it starts you from the standpoint of already having updated to 4.0
The second one looks like it's giving you directions to update to 4.0

I see, so out of the 2, which would be the safest option?

Take in mind I have already installed System 4.0 via the Wii System Menu.

Thanks BlackEnigma! I'm at work now, but when I get home I'll get the cIOS installed, hit the 4.0 upgrade then run the IOS downgrader. The instructions on the USB loader seem simple enough, knowing that it's run as a channel clarifies it a great deal.

One last Q - do I want to run bootmii, or is that overkill with a non-softmod? Not sure how likely I am to end up with a brick if I'm not softmodded (and I don't run any out of region games unless I've scrubbed them first).

You shouldn't encounter problems. The Backup Loaders and USB Loaders skip updates. You don't need to update to play a game online. As long as you can get a game running you can access its online features.

A personal example that isn't exactly your situation but take from it what you may: I'm on 4.0. I recently bought The Conduit. I tried to play it from the disc channel and it wanted to update. I guess because it saw that one of my IOSes was not quite and the very latest version. I installed the game and loaded it through the USB Loader and I could play the game even though as far as it was concerned I was not fully updated. Thus it not absolutely a requirement to be updated as fully as possible to play many games.

Let me finish this by saying that even though you can play the majority of games, there are certain newer games that require IOSes that I know specifically are not part of the 3.3 firmware. Either you will have to update or you will have to install these IOSes manually with Wad Manager.

Since you are on 4.0 I'd go with the first one. I'm actually more familiar with that guide and even though I didn't use it to softmod my own Wii I certainly can vouch for it.

The purpose of that guide is to install cIOS, Backup Launcher, and the Homebrew Channel. If you already have the Homebrew Channel and Backup Launcher you should do this instead http://yafaze.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=70

Edit: I forgot to say something. If you do further steps, notice where it talks about installing IOS60? Please don't ever uninstall the wad of IOS60. It is a death sentence for your Wii. Actually I'd take the wad off of the the SD card so no accidents happen.

You're welcome and I hope that everything works out fine.

It doesn't hurt to install Bootmii particularly if you can install it as Boot2. Currently its only real feature is the backup and restoration of your nand. Just the fact that you have a modchip already makes your Wii a bit safer then one without one. However this isn't to say that because you have a modchip that your Wii is not susceptible to the massive brick that that so many people face when they decide to uninstall a wad of IOS60. If you do this, then Bootmii and a backup of your nand would be almost the only way out of sending it Nintendo. I'm sure that money that you work for has many other better places to be spent.

Newb here, but I have googled (and googled and googled and googled) and I still can't find a resolution to my problem so I belive this is the right forum and thread to post my question...

I have a wii, on firmware 4.0, with homebrew and WiiGator's Backup loader installed. I get the same error 324, but I know it's not my discs because I pulled the disc from my brother's wii which played them fine. His is an older v. 3.3 with twilight hack and bought his wii and fully prepared prehacked system on ebay and it works perfectly, mine... not so much. On my sd card's I have boot mii (installed from the boot 2 position), IOS38-64-v3610 wad, IOS36-64-1042 wad, private (Came with the bootmii/hackmii installation download), installer.txt (came with the bootmii/hackmii installation download), boot.elf, hackmii_installer_beta2, and my apps folder with: Anytitle Deleter, Backup Launcher, cios installer (the one that came with Wii Gator's BU Loader, with sonic on it), CIOS36 for usb loaders rev 9, CIOS38 rev 13b for usb loaders, custom cios IOS 249 installer.

I have tried ALL those cios's and tried to installed them, but nothing seems to work.

1.) The one with sonic won't work because my wii isn't online.
2.) The rev 9 CIOS installer won't work, I get to where it says "Installing ticket... ERROR! - ret= -2011"
3.) I get the same error ret -2011 on rev 13b and rev 7

No matter what I still get the 324 no cios error. After having sucessfully installed homebrew and backup launcher, I feel really close and don't want to give up, but I was at this day and night all weekend and this is my second day bringing it to the office trying to figure it out. I'm still unsure of what a wad manager is and maybe I need that, please can someone help me seal the deal on this one?

Jeremy

Edit: Nevermind, I finally found the right tutorial for me, if anyone is having the same problem go here http://www.yafaze.com/forums/viewtopic.php...&p=327#p327 it is the only thing that worked for me and I have fried many things.

Since only your first quote has a name, I'm guessing you copy and paste right?

Its way faster to use Multi-Quote
Just click all the "+Quote" buttons and then "Add Reply"

Finally someone tells me how to use this Quote+ function, thanks bro..!!

(I'm running a back-up btw)

Go to the "Wii Discussions > Backup Loaders Section" and you'll see the NeoGamma thread there..!!

Hi, brand new here
smile.gif

Awhile ago I came across this GUIDE. After reading, I decided to turn it into a new project, I want to do this. We have a wii already and I set about researching further. That lead me to here, this forum seems to have a wealth of useful information. However, adept as I'd like to think I am, at times, I feel incredibly overwhelmed by it all.

I've read through the stickies and other threads and other info elsewhere and I feel I'm now ready to start asking the noob questions to get me on the way.

Basically, I want to do exactly what is in that guide I posted. I want to be able to rip my games to an external HDD and play them from there without the need to keep changing discs. i'm fairly certain that's what that guide is for ultimately. However, I'm very thorough and I know it's never that straight forward. So I have various questions and will definately have alot more as this progresses.

After researching I found there is no viable way to completely transfer your data from one wii to another, I didn't want to risk my original wii and it's data as it's a family console. I bought another wii.

Serial starts LEH and the firmware on it is v3.3E. I figure this won't cause any problems as I can always move forwards or backwards. I'm just not entirely sure where to start from.

Ok so with all that in mind, here are my questions.

1) I like to always play safe , I noticed there are a few methods of making your wii unbrickable (reportedly). Would it be safe for me to start here? Before I go into the depths of the above guide, should I follow one of the methods to make my wii solid? Which method is best recommended?

2) With the guide above and the first question in mind, how does my current firmware leave me? Should I be looking to downgrade or upgrade or leave it as it is?

3) In the guide I won't to follow posted above, is it in anyway outdated? It was written in April i believe, but would anyone here say it's outdated or is there a better method to reach want i want to achieve? Is any of the software required for this outdated and would it be ok to simply substitute the latest version of any outdated software into that guide?

4) By doing what I want to achieve, what will I no longer be able to do as normal on my wii? This refers to things like system updates and channels? Can I still purchase from the shopping channel (I've skimmed some problems with this). What if i update my system firmware when it's been hacked to perform the above operations? Will this cause problems?

I think that's all for now. I'm literally ready and set up to go and will be proceeding with this as soon as I get responses. My new wii is turned on and functioning, to repeat it's currently firmware 3.3E. I'm going to setup the wireless right now and then disable the wii connect 24. After that, well that's on your recommendation
smile.gif

Any help appreciated, I'm sure to become an avid fan of this site.

EDIT: Ok, so I need to install the Homebrew channel before anything else, I have the guide infront of me. My question covers this and any update. Should I upgrade my firmware to 4.0 (latest?) or leave it as it is 3.3E or should I be using another firmware. What's the all round ideal firmware to use with everything above in mind?

1) Well to do anything that is post here, you need to start by installing the HBC (Homebrew Channel) and BootMii as boot2 if possible, after that do a Backup of your NAND and that is what is going to give you the safety fallback to go back to this point

2) Well if you can install bootmii as boot2 then you can downgrade to 3.2 and install preloader to enable certain hacks (not very usefull now hence USB Loaders tho), if boot2 is repaired by Nintendo and you can't install bootmii there, then go to 4.0 and install preloader, NOTE: before down/upgrading, make sure you install any Waninkoko's cIOS, the Firmware Downgrader (tool to go up or down) needs it

3) I refuse to read a guide
tongue.gif
but to use any USB loader you only need to install a cIOS, have a HDD (duh) and a SD card, the files needed can/can't be outdated, but you really want cIOS_r9/r10 if not USB instruments for Rockband are going to be used, and cIOS_13/r13b if they are, depending on the cIOS installed, your HDD has to be connected in the upper or lower USB slot
wink.gif
, and to have the latest revision of certain USB loader just go to the Loaders section and grab the latest compiled loader of your choice

4) There are no problems found as of today by updating thru Wii's Settings, and you centainly need to update to have acces to the WiiShop channel, but as in the iPhone, "there's an app for that too" (hope no one charges me for using that phrase
tongue.gif
) is called WiiSCU (Wii Shop Channel Updater) and it will install the latest WiiShop in your Wii, without the need to upgrade the entire SysMenu, and no one recomends to update cause if by god's willing "N" block the IOS where the cIOS is (IOS249), then all the apps hanging from that IOS would become unusable (USB/SD/DVD backup loaders, up/downgraders, etc etc etc...)

QUOTE(Nollog @ Jul 5 2009, 01:19 PM)
I had preloader blocking updates and it never worked, I did both skip update on and off and nothing changed.
I don't have cioscorp, and rebooting with hooks never worked either.

I did try usbloadergx after this with an old 80GB hard drive I found, and the game works perfectly so it was the dvds, thank you for your help!
I've never had a problem with the dvds though damn wii.
Oh well.
Figured I'd reply to show the next person with a similar problem what worked for me. Thanks again.
biggrin.gif

That is so weird that preloader never blocked the updates, for everyone in here the hack (patch) work, but well now you don't need it really...!!

hey i'm going to try and keep this short and simple:
i'm on a 4.0u (updated through nintendo) launch wii with the wiikey modchip and homebrew channel installed. i did what this guide said in order to get tueidj's superdumper to work. my wii worked just fine after dumping a couple games, but suddenly it just doesn't read backups anymore. it's like the wiikey isn't there anymore. could the custom ios be conflicting with the modchip? is this supposed to happen? is there a way to revert all the ioses to nintendo's defaults?

any help is much appreciated

The cIOS has nothing to do with your ModChip, doing an official ninty update can give you all the IOSes, but it wont delete your cIOS (wich is good), I am guessing it is your media, or your dumps aren't good at all, I wont read the guide, but did you installed anything else besides the cIOS..??

Just to update on my progress so far I have successfully,

1) Run the bomberban test
2) Installed bomberban aad1f_v108
3) Installed the hackmii_installer_beta2
4) Installed cIOS36_rev-10
5) Installed WAD-manager v1.4
6) Installed Loader Forwarder Channel (usb-loader) using WAD manager 1.4
7) Copied USB Loader GX 1.0 to my SD card ready to run

So I have my homebrew channel setup and understand the concept of running the apps (.dols) through it.

I understand the usb-loader is basically a shortcut for my usb loader GX 1.0

I tested USB Loader GX 1.0 and it runs

So far everything seems to be working fine with no problems yet
smile.gif

8) Installed WBFS Manager 3.0.1 on my PC

So I'm now about to prep my HDD. I'm going to be trying it with an external 1TB Toshiba HDD. The actual HDD inside is WD WD10EAVS 8MB 5400-7200RPM. I can't find any info on whether it's compatible so I'm just going to try and see what happens.

If there's anything else anyone can suggest, anything at all, be it installing additional things etc.. One thing I'd like to look back on is the Bootmii program or any alternative method for helping with a brick, should it occur.

EDIT: Ok I successfully partioning my HDD, it's recognized in the usb loader GX 1.0. However I have a problem. After unlocking, I went to click + and then clicked "Yes" to rip a game and then received a black screen with white text giving me a "Exception (DSI) occurred!

Any ideas?

EDIT1: Started reading through the incredibly long GX thread and have updated to the latest revision, I'm currently ripping my first game 6 minute left
smile.gif

FINAL EDIT: Everything works!

Tested first ripped game, works perfectly, proceeding to back up all my other games now. What a wonderful program.

Had a problem with running the forwarder but after taking a look in the SD card folder structure I realised it was reading from it's own usb-loader folder and the default .dol was a different loader, so simply moved GX to that folder and hey presto.

Still interested in any tips for a noob. This is day 1 for me so I know there's plenty more to learn.

Well if you are interested to learn then give it a read at wiibrew.org, if you were able to achieve all this by yourself, then I guess you really don't need any other advice but to read read read read read....... !!

ANY cIOS will work on 3.3, the question is: can it be installed just by using the installer..?? or will you need the IOS16 and the Custom Wad Manager to achieve this..??

Anyway, here's my problem;
I just installed Homebrew Channel and DVDx from the HackMii installer package via Bannerbomb. Now, whenever I try to boot HBC, the screen will go black, stay black for a few seconds, then go back to the Wii Menu. Two questions.
1. WTF MATE!!?!
2. What's the problem, and how do I fix it?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You lack of the IOSes 60-61, use bannerbomb to load WiiSCU and let it do its job...!!

ModChip only interfere if you are going to use DVDx and MPlayer to watch movies on your Wii, so any other guide will be same for Soft/Hard modded people..!!

Thanks a lot BlackEnigma & tj your posts help a ton. I guess the 'twilight hack' was just a 'method' used to get homebrew installed on the system as opposed to something that is actually installed and residing on the wii? That makes much more sense...

So thanks to your posts my new to-do list is looking like this:

1. Use the hackmii installer to upgrade HBC from 1.1 to 1.3, also install bootmii and backup the current wii NAND to SD before continuing further
2. Upgrade whatever cIOS revision I have installed currently to cIOS38rev13 using HBC
3. Install Neogamma R6
4. Install WadManager 1.4

The one other questions I still have are: can I upgrade my wii firmware safely at some point in this process, and is there any reason to? I understand if I upgrade to the wii menu 4.X i will have to use the bannerbomb method to reinstall HBC, which I don't want to do unless there's a really good reason too. Lastly, can I uninstall the old backup loader 0.3 after to get rid of it from the system?

Thanks again for your help guys.

If you are not on 4.0, or haven't used the WiiSCU (WiiShop updater) then you lack of IOSes 60-61, wich is needed for HBC1.0.3, so make sure you have them before updating your HBC

2. Upgrade whatever cIOS revision I have installed currently to cIOS38rev13 using HBC
cIOS_r13/13b are just needed if you are going to use USB RockBand instruments, otherwise cIOS_r9/10 are the best options (less freezing on games)

3. Install Neogamma R6
Well just updating the .dol on your SD, no need to install a channel for this cause it gets updated very fast lately

4. Install WadManager 1.4
Mmmmmm...... sounds good

The one other questions I still have are: can I upgrade my wii firmware safely at some point in this process, and is there any reason to?
Yes after you install your cIOS, you can use Waninkoko's Updater to go to 4.0 and you'll need some patcher for IOSes 60-61, 3.2 is the best for me, so don't know the name of that patcher, the only reason to go to 4.0 is if you want to launch channels from SD

I understand if I upgrade to the wii menu 4.X i will have to use the bannerbomb method to reinstall HBC, which I don't want to do unless there's a really good reason too.
Well if you have HBC already you wont need twilight hack or bannerbomb again anymore, cause you can use HBC instead of ay of those

Lastly, can I uninstall the old backup loader 0.3 after to get rid of it from the system?
You haven't yet...??

The cIOS has nothing to do with your ModChip, doing an official ninty update can give you all the IOSes, but it wont delete your cIOS (wich is good), I am guessing it is your media, or your dumps aren't good at all, I wont read the guide, but did you installed anything else besides the cIOS..??
huh.gif
yeah, i suspected those files shouldn't conflict with modchips whatsoever, but it's just weird. i only did what that guide said (installed cios249 and downgraded a handful of ioses). i also installed rawksd, but i already asked and wiikey users can use it just fine (which is to be expected). i already uninstalled the cios and updated the ioses to the latest nintendo versions (which i was fine with), but the modchip is still not working.

maybe the modchip just stopped working by itself or got loose or something like that, but that'd be really weird timing. it read like 4 backups after i made the ios modifications, but then it just stopped. maybe it really is just a coincidence...

thanks for replying

Thank you, you've been very helpful. Is it easier to update to 4.0 or easier to add the IOSes for the games that may need them?
When you add an IOS, can you just simply add as many as you need or do you have to overwrite?
